Thank you Jack, for another entertaining ride. I found this one more interesting in that you ended up in an area where there were trees and the odd hill. Most of your trips seem to be over monotonous flat-lands that would bore me stiff How do you stay awake and sane. After retiring age, I drove a 16-seater minibus in regular service over country lanes serving outlying villages, now that was interesting. Early shifts meant starting at 4.am and late shifts finished after midnight and we would clock up about 110,000 miles a year. Meeting all the passengers, many of them, elderly was interesting and enjoyable and for the quieter periods, there was always the radio on a classical music station.

I love these videos too. But now I have a question. I have heard that 18 wheelers had to have a standard transmission. The weight of a trailer would cause an automatic transmission to snap out of gear. Have automatic transmissions become so advanced that this no longer happens? And now it seems that automatic transmissions in semis get better mileage. I would really appreciate some input on this. Keep this videos coming Jack!!!!

Thanks again for the ride ! Average load on a tandem here in sunny old South Africa will be 52000 pounds and on a tri-axle , 61- to 66000 pounds payload . Still legal . our diff ratios however differ . Much "slower" on the same rev's , but then we don't have to shift gears that often/early . We will run at about 1550rpm on 50 mph . My Columbia was spec with a 3.1 ratio (standard is 3.5) , so I am doing 1100rpm at 50mph (legal speed for trucks in South Africa). Just about 1300rpm on 57 mph (not legal but the general speed we doing here)

@indianajack
@indianajack 9 жыл бұрын
Most companies won't give you a CB. You should probably start out with a Cobra which you can find at every truck stop. CBs aren't used much anymore (unfortunately) but it's good to have one on bad weather or some traffic situations.
@timengland3649
@timengland3649 9 жыл бұрын
+Dark wing You can probably get a Cobra @ any truck stop for @ 120.00. After you install it find a good cb shop that can tune it using the stock antennas on the trk or an external antenna you purchase. A lot of shippers and receivers still use the cb to call you to assign a door to load or unload. You'll find out why you need a cb @ the 1st grocery delivery you make. Best of luck on your new career!

Jack I have a Cascadia evolution with an automatic and it gets 9.2 only when I'm bobtail or pulling less than 25000 pounds. otherwise I'm getting about what you're getting in the five to six mile per gallon range. although there are those that claim that the new 579 and t680's with that MX Paccar junk mill up front, are getting better than 7.8 miles per gallon no matter what road they drive or how heavy they are. I'm going to call BS on that stuff! by the way if I had been you in that situation I would have refused at load and said find somebody else for this heavy ass load.

Diesel fuel weights like water 7.5 per gallon so you had room for 100 gallons. the front axle and drives would have taken the 800 plus. I wish you had left the vid on for the new bridge. I was back and forth across the old one after Katrina F#%k it up and watched the new one going up, but never have seen the finished product.

+Philip Hilton Water is 8lbs and diesel is 6lbs per gallon. So, you are right that he could've fueled up 100% if he had adjusted his 5th wheel and tandums. But, he chose the lazy way and only stopped for 50g.

Jack, as a kid growing up in Michigan, we would make trips to Lagrange Ga, to visit family, I remember riding in the back of a 57 Chevy station wagon all the way down their and back, sure was a long hot trip back in the late 50s, their were several places they didn't have 75 finished, it took the better part of two days to get their, unlike today where you can drive it in hours, and the fuel pumps not working, that's your modern day technology working for you.

I feel your pain Jack. I hated delivering to New Orleans. I was stuck on a dedicated run for 2 wks from KC to NO and back hauling coffee from one P&G warehouse to the other. It's not an easy run. A lot of hard pulling two lane roads uphill thru towns where you almost slap mirrors because it was so tight. 45-46k both ways. I finally got a load out of KC Ks to Wonder Bread back east. Guess what, another 45k of flower in super sacs. I scaled out pretty close to max. but some S.O.B. did a lane dive exit and I had to spike the breaks. It was just my luck the KCMO scale was open. The scale master was fine as wine but I still got a $100.00 ticket for being over on my drives. Her beautiful smile and a hot cup of coffee made it bearable to pay the fine. Safe Travels!
