I have been trying to figure out a good system for my active midlayers for winter backpacking/mountaineering. I recently picked up a Mountain Hardwear Kor Ciruss Hybrid jacket that I think might do a good job when climbing and sweating in steep terrain in cold conditions. I wont be able to give it a proper test until October or November, but I'm excited to. Winter mountaineering is always a big battle between staying warm and avoiding sweat. Earlier this year, I picked up a Big Agnes Copper Spur 1p tent. Its just over 2 lbs, while being free standing, and having good headroom to fully sit up in. I tested it out twice this year; once at Lewis Lake below Black Peak in the North Cascades, and once in Terror Basin before climbing Mcmillan Spire in The Pickets (also North Cascades). It worked quite well, and was very comfortable, though somewhat noisy in the high winds I experienced in Terror Basin. It was expensive, but a fully freestanding tent at just over 2lbs is pretty nice.

@diana35994 жыл бұрын
Patagonia is a business, right? Surely they have introduced some improvements over the years that we all take for granted now no matter what outdoor activity we enjoy. You are likely wearing something as part of your winter "kit". The general public really isn't going to know if an innovation is useless or not d/t not spending enough time "testing" the products in real life situations. She'll (and other out door enthusiasts) put it through it's paces and can give realistic feedback. She can donate her other clothing items or resell them. Never got the impression she was throwing them away or buying items, leaving the tags on them and just not using them.

It’s been a hot minute since I’ve had a puppy, 14 years really, and I had worked my best girl up to 50 mile weeks easily. She was an Australian Kelpie mix. My new pup is an Australian Cattle Dog and about 5 months old. I’ve talked to other ACD owners and they say their dogs don’t know a limit but they never mentioned how old they were when they started taking them hiking for long trips. Life forced us to wait until Zo (old pup) was almost 2 before she did long mileage, do you think that was lucky good timing, or could this new girl go closer to 1 year old which was my original thought. Love that your pup goes everywhere with you!

It's still negative on the environment to buy something to replace an item you already own and works perfectly fine. I get that this video's a marketing play by REI and that informing customers about more sustainable choices is great, but I said that quote in my head enough times to put it in writing, I guess. Thanks again for the content.
@pattip19824 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify the Ruffwear Highlands model you're showing is the NEW 2020 version, because the old model is still available (for sale). I got both the pad & bag to test out this year and originally loved the thought of the 'tuck in' part of the sleeping pad, but then once you tuck it in you cover most of the non-stick area so it almost defeats the purpose. Ruffwear would have been better off making it a velcro or loop type attachment to keep the parts together. Also, the pad is not good as a ground pad around the fire pit. One little spark will make a hole it in so I mostly just use it now for extra padding in the tent and protect the floor and don't tuck it into the bag. The pad is also really good as a food/water mat. The sleeping bag has been great though, but my dog (67lbs) is in between the Med-Large size so just a bit awkward to get his butt into the bag because the zipper doesn't zip down far enough to be able to tuck him in. Otherwise, the compact-ability and pack-ability has been awesome for backpacking and it's super easy to wash. Just order the new Big Agnes Copper Spur HV UL2 from REI and plan to test out this weekend to determine it's Dog-ability.

What do you do about the condensation issues in the Flash Air Series? I have heard of many returns due to it (my roommate). Did you properly break the timps in? Did you wear sock liners and merino wool socks? Did you put body glide on your feet? Thru hikers are so weird about using trail runners to backpack. Altras are especially insurable and could be rolled ankle city. If you don't roll ankles, then great, but boots serve a great purpose and give great protection and I think there should be great consideration given before opting for tail runners. 1 injury could mean a lifetime of associated problems. I will say, if the trails are not technical then that increases the case for trail running argument. I guess I'm really saying, calm down trail runner for backpacking community. Just because it was cool on the AT doesn't mean it's best for everyone.
