Just a note on black ranchus. You were originally correct in saying it has impaired vision, the recessive gene which causes it to keep its dark color past the juvenile stage of life is linked to eyesight deficiencies and generally these jet black thai ranchus are almost completely blind. They rely almost entirely on smell and its lateral line to find food. What likely happened is that it wasn't competing for food very well compared to the Orandas and become weak over time due to lack of nutrition, this may have caused it to be unable to pull itself out from the intake which compounded the stress and led to the death. I would generally advise to keep black ranchus in tanks by themselves or with black moors so the feeding competition is even. Furthermore the super black ranchus I have seen imported in from thailand tend to be pumped full of growth hormones due to the fact their weak genetic makeup means they naturally grow slower and are more fragile than other ranchu, this really affects their organs and can lead to premature death as well. Recommend if you want another one to find someone who has bred them locally from thai parents and not given them growth hormone, it will be more sturdy, good luck!

You can stick the suction of the pump in the aquarium wall then the intake facing the aquarium floor. I think that will lessen fish getting sucked unless a weak/dying fish. The only downside of trickle filter vs overhead sump is when there's power outage, medias can dry out.

Ahhhh... I wonder if there's a way to correct the issue if drying out media, I didnt think about that scenario

@@johnjalani124 I was thinking of modifying two of the boxes to hold water (the bottom shelves) that way at least half of the biomedia would be submerged? Thanks for bringing this up by the way! Gets me thinking of solutions before things happen

@@BryanLa i did a diy trickle filter but the trickle is on the sponge and the rest of biomedias is on like sump type where water stays longer and wont dry out.

I'm sorry to hear you lost another goldfish. It was a good looking fish. That filter looks pro. Kingkoigoldfish has really good quality goldfish. He's somewhere in California and online. I bought a few from there and they came the next day they shipped before noon, or you can pick up locally.

Ahh we'll see. The ranchu was the last goldfish I wanted to keep, but now with it gone I'm considering donating the other two to my friend's pond and maybe move the wolf up to the top tank. still brainstorming though! maybe we'll get another ranchu!

Yup, been working like a charm. Only source of filtration in the tank and my fish eats and poops like crazy. Parameters are normal.

@@Gobrian44 K1 is my favorite media, I don't think anything can really compare. if you have space, go for K1, if you don't, go for the overhead sump with the Biohome media.
