Great pen after watching this I went browsing, which really means shopping lol. I found a a Platinum Century 3776 Nice Lila with a Broad Nib. Now just have to wait for it to come. Will be my first gold nib.

I would love to watch update videos!! I am at the beginning of my fountain pen journey and (most of) the pens in your collection are ones I am looking at as possibilities to grow my collection. I would love to hear your thoughts after having these pens for awhile. It would be interesting to know which ones you reach for the most at this point and which ones haven't lived up to your expectations. (And that leaf blower... Too funny!!). Great video!

I watched last night and thought it was pretty funny that both you and I had issues with our new pens writing from the cartridge without dipping them first. 😅 I enjoy my 3776 and I do find that it doesn't dry out for a long time! I hope you love yours.

A good tip is to wash/flush your pen and nibsection out with luke warm water BEFORE you ink and use the pen. This prevents a lot of nib troubles/disappointments. Ink is no replacement for plain water because of the dye in it. Enjoy your new pen!

Congratulations on your 3776. I enjoy the model a lot and have this pen in many nib sizes. My favorite size is a broad, which writes like a Western medium. I also enjoy the music nib, and the coarse nib is perfect for custom grinds such as an architect nib. The converters do not have a ball in them and are well worth the cost. I have the Laurel Green also, but I wish it was a hair lighter so that the pen looks green instead of black.

I absolutely agree about the green - I'd love if it was more visibly green. And I can absolutely see how you'd end up with multiples of this model. I have heard that it will receive a bit of an overhaul and the nib will look differently in the future.

I had to laugh at "frickin' leaves". lol It's fall and people can't seem to stand leaving leaves alone. Those leaf blowers are like a toy for "big kids". I put up with it about three times a week from the people who do yardwork on my street. I don't own a Platinum 3776 or a Pilot Custom 74. I just keep thinking they look so...plain. They just don't appeal to me, though that's a silly reason to ignore a good pen. I might have to look at them again. I hope you have wonderful writing experiences with your 3776 and I'd love to hear more about what you think after one year with your Pilot.

You know - if you like pens that are not "plain" then I'm sure there are so many of them that check all the boxes for you. I think I'm missing out on things because they don't appeal to me.

@@seemownay Maybe "plain" is the wrong word to use. I don't like "glitz" (like Benu pens; they are way outside my comfort zone and I don't find them very attractive at all), but just black, cigar shaped pens do not seem very interesting to look at. You did say one of your pens was green...but I couldn't see that on my laptop. I seem to mostly go for good old TWSBI 580's and I'm attracted to some of the soft colored Sailor Shikiori Pro Gear Slims. I don't think you're missing out on anything when you find a pen that suits you! Isn't it wonderful that there are pens to fit all our tastes?! :)

Aww, thanks for the mention! ❤ Glad you pulled the trigger on Amazon Japan. Beautiful Platinum 3776, beautiful color. No ball is the platinum converter. Also try flushing the nib prior to inking the pens or prime by dipping like you did. I hope you enjoy your new pen.

think Platinum 3776 EF in Chartres bleu w rhodium trim is the best looking, best writing pen in my collection (and I have a bunch of pens a lot more expensive than this!), the converter is probably the best of those available for Pilot, Platinum and Sailor: I’ve inked mine w J Herbin éclat de saphir which is quite a wet ink, think might switch to Diamine imperial blue which should help it to put down the same line width as my Pilot/Sailor EF’s:)

Excellent microphone, I was sure the gardener was outside my own window and could not understand how I was hearing it through my noise cancelling headphones :) As for the 3776, I have a Course and a Music, and I love them a lot. not a fan of medium and below, but I am sure they are very convenient to write with. I hate the crazy price they charge for the converter. for the same price I can get a Chinese Platinum Meteor children's pen and it comes with a simpler but functional push-pull converter.

Haha, thanks for the mic compliment. I'm still dabbling in the "normal" nib size range. I think I'll have to visit a couple more pen shows and go to meetups where people bring their special nibs so I can try and explore them.

@@seemownay I hear you. I had a 30 year hiatus from fountain pens and decided to dive back in just before COVID hit the west, so I had no club meetings to go to, I ended up buying way too many pens and nibs for myself just to try everything. I should really start getting rid of some.

I grabbed this same deal on Amazon last month but I went for a Soft Fine. I am more of a collector (hoarder) than a user but your videos are inspiring me to pare down my currently inked and actually get some experience and form a point of view. I also purchased the Higo-Inlaid Ginkgo because I had $150 Amazon giftcard from a prior employer and felt like I was getting away with something good on the excellent price! I remember them shipping quicker than I expected and I knew I would have to purchase converters (I always think they are overpriced) and found a 2-pack for $22. I really found the section comparison you did interesting. I believe the Pilot Custom 74 will be too thin for my taste but was intrigued that it is longer unposted and that could work well for my thing long fingers and specific grip.

I just wrote with both pens today the Custom 74 and the Platinum 3776 and they both feel very comfortable in my hand. I thought I would notice the difference in width on the section more but to be honest, I don't.

Wow! You got a nice deal on that pen. Thanks for sharing and comparing to other pens. About a week ago I received a similar pen, the Pilot Custom 823 with a B nib. I’ve been using Noodler’s Kiowa Pecan ink but want to change it out today. That ink is a beautiful color but stays too wet on my Hobonichi TR paper much longer than the other inks I am currently using. 🖋❤️ I am enjoying the pen.

I hope you find an ink for your 823 that dries faster. I wonder if it's not just the ink but also the amount of ink the broad nib lays down onto the paper. Have fun experimenting!

I just purchased one on Fountain Pen Day at a great discount (less than $140, so not as good as yours)! I swore I would not buy any expensive Japanese pens (because I am happy with the cheap ones--Platinum Plaisirs and Pilot Metropolitans), but I couldn't help myself! So much hype about Pilot, Platinum, and Sailor! I got a Broad nib in white (because I figure you can pair any color of ink with a white pen, and I have a lot of pink and purple inks!) Very annoying that a converter is not included and has to be purchased separately. I prefer longer grip sections, so not sure I'm going to be a fan, but I guess my "collection" will be more complete with a higher-end Platinum.

If you take the TWSBIs as comparison, I think the 3776 is not as wet and thus doesn't have as broad a line as the TWSBI. So the 3776 medium is finer than the TWSBI. I struggle with finding inks that are wet enough for the pen. I just inked the broad 3776 with Day 5 Nightfall of the inkvent and it's amazing.
