So I played this game for the first time for a few hours today, set out on our journey with a friend to an island. We got out first chest, I spent most of my time the time front of the ship playing some instruments and enjoying the scenery, we noticed one of those light beams and thought we would sail towards it. Part way there the environment got very dark and it worried us so we turned to go back the other way. That's when the megalodon turned up, it chomped us a few times but left us alone after a while, then a ship rose up out the water next to us, we panicked and tried to sail away back to the outpost but it wouldn't leave us alone, I ended up boarding the ship trying to buy my friend time to run away but it kept chasing. We turned to face it and after an intense fight we managed to sink the ship, LESS THAN 30 SECONDS LATER the ocean got very dark and tentacles rose from the deep. My friend got picked out the boat while I was trying to repair. Again there was a long and intense fight but we managed to fight off the kraken and survived the encounter. It was a lot to process on our first voyage.

The white flag is good for that, if you want to be alone but if provoked you'll fight back, the checkered one.

Few tips for Xbox beginners here: 1: PVP only when your ships empty of loot 2: Check the horizon a full 360 every 5 minutes. 3: If you play solo or duo coop you'll get the Sloop 4: If anyone is trying to chase you down sail AGAINST the wind, with your sails facing forward, and full spread. 5: Find a different outpost to deliver to, away from your first one. 6: If you can't shake them sail directly into the nearest edge of the map, the sea will turn red, and destroy your ship. No loot for them. 7: Drop often, and use emissary flags. 8: In PVP you will lose vs. PC. Ignore every weapon but blunderbombs. Spam blunderbombs on their ship, grab firebombs from their barrels, drop their anchor, and camp from their canopy. If you have gunpowder, keep it by the wheel, and drop it off the back when they're behind you. 9: Most people are terrible on this game, and couldn't care less if you quit because you're tired of losing hauls. If you can learn to fight, great. Good luck. If you don't want to wait 500 hours until you can solo camp a Galleon crew like you're Mixel/Blurbs you need to learn how to run better. Like I said, fight when you have nothing to lose. It's good practice.

Just in case anyone is curious, I just like to share knowledge where I can. Listed below are all the Nautical terms that apply to Sea of Thieves still: front = Bow (pointy thing is bowsprint) "left" (facing bow) = Port "right" (facing bow) = Starboard rear = Stern front mast = Fore mast mid mast = Middle mast rear mast = Mizzen mast Always call out compass directions because not everyone is facing the same direction as you into the wind = No go with the wind = Dead run straight across the ship = Beam reach across the ship from bow to stern = Close reach across the shop from stern to bow = Broad reach (the fastest wind in game & irl) These terms help a lot when you can rely on everyone to use them properly, there is a good reason they exist in the first place. Trust me, try it and you will notice a significant difference in not just your appreciation for the game but also skill.

One of the best things a newer player can do is (once they build up the courage) to join a galleon with four random people and play for a couple hours with them. I did that and I learned not to do things like storing loot on a lower floor and I learned to be a more confident player. Another big tip I suggest is to get yourself invested into this game. If you’re subscribed to a couple sot KZbinrs and watch their tips and tricks videos you’ll learn a lot Edit: Also don’t be afraid to google a question you have about the game it might help

Played my first session of SOT yesterday. apparently you can't do the sparkly eyed guy's stuff until you're a pirate legend? Did a quick delivery quest for the merchant lady. Found out that it's best if you find out where on the island your delivery is BEFORE you take the crates off your ship. Swam out into the water to try out the Mermaid thing at one point, and spotted a barnacle covered chest on the bottom of the ocean. Turned it in to the hoarders when I got back to the outpost. Saw one small ghost ship (I think, there were skellies on it) but it turned tail and ran after a few cannon shots.

Thank you! Both funny and very helpful. As a new player who is still figuring out how to lower the dang sail, let alone use the "turn-y thing", this is helpful. So it seems "sail length" and "sail angle" are NOT the thingies that LOWER the sail HAHA. Didn't even know about the flag box :)
