Aichinger's story, in translation as 'The Bound Man' is a story that interrogated me deeply as an adolescent emerging in identity, and has remained as a recurring influence over nearly six decades at this writing. Only in describing the story to a friend today did I learn that Aichinger was a woman, a persecuted woman of letters. So as one who is late to a lot of good gatherings - thanks to Professor Schulte, the Center for Translation Sudies, and to the memory of Ms. Aichinger.
