New project! 1951 Buick straight-8 engine needs to be rebuilt | Redline Update #28

Davin's back at it in the Hagerty Garage. After completing our Chevy Stovebolt straight-6 rebuild last month (more to come on that), we thought it would be fun to add 2 more cylinders and take a crack at a straight-8 engine from a 1951 Buick Super Convertible. The car itself is in the process of being completely restored (you can check out that restoration process at Hagerty) and we thought a classic straight-8 would make for another great Redline Rebuild time-lapse video. Step one: Get the engine out of the car and over to our video garage.

A 64 Malibu that my wife and I partially restored in our early years together. The 64 malibu was the best swap I ever made. Other guy got my 84 S-10 With 350V8 and TH350. So good, like gold. Three years after that, the state began emiss testing at state only facility. That S-10's only hope was strictly drags.

toesuf94 I personally think they do in fact sound like V8s, but straight 8s for sure have a different sound to them. It’s almost like a mix of a cross plane crank V8 and a flat plane crank V8.

Looking forward to the rebuild . I'm glad to see I am not the only one that had a hard time figuring out how to pick one of these thing up . I just got through rebuilding a 40 strait 8 at my machine shop . I always enjoy getting to do something out of the ordinary . Our specialty at my shop is heavy diesel engines but our name " Advantage Engine Restoration " brings in all kinds of antique engine work . I'm doing a L134 Willys right now and have the crank case out of a 900 c.i.d. American LeFrance that I have got to fit the crankshaft into the babbit bearings . The man that we have always used to pour our bearings recently passed away . If anyone knows anyone near Birmingham , Alabama , please let me know .

Like a lot of other commenters, this is the one I've been waiting for. Back in the day my youngest sister, I've got a lot of sisters, bought a 1951 Buick sedan with a straight eight. Very quickly she realized the engine was garbage and off it went. It was a beauty, though.

I bought a '51 4 door Super but the day I went to pick it up the owner finally regret it extremely much having sold it so we ended undoing the deal... I bought a '58 Plymouth then, but I've had this car in my mind since then, more over a convertible one just like this... I'd be happy is one day I could just drive one, I loved sitting behind that wheel even it was for just one moment...

The way I remember it the straight eight Buick engine came in three series. The 8-40 was the smallest & came in the 'entry level' & earliest [pre war] cars. The 8-60 was longer & with greater displacement & was used in larger & more 'flash' models. Both engines were used in post war cars with three port holes in the hood/ bonnet. The Century series was the 8-80 engine & it was supposed to be longer & larger again. The host vehicles I believe were the Roadmaster models with four port holes in the hood although I have been told that they were also used in some other vehicles such as limousines & coffin carriers [Hearse]. I haven't had anything to do with these engines since I was a teen back in the mid '60's so perhaps a little brain fade may be at work here. I also seem to recall that the main bearing journal size increased in size from front to rear to help counteract the torsional twist of such a long crank. Am I delusional??? OK, so now I need to dig out my master manual [1929 to 1939] to check out the specs.
