You can overcome the stretching by forcing 4:3 on the tv settings itself for the games that dont support 16:9. I guess they made it like this because they know most hdtvs, if not all of them, let you tweak the aspect ration on the tv itself. So i dont see that as a con.

The reason it is darker on your PS2 is because you have it plugged into the USB port. The ps2 now has to use extra power to power the unit. Your PS1 has the unit plugged into the wall so its not pulling power from the console, hence why the picture is better.
@quinnd66 жыл бұрын
The grand theft auto games on the PS2 have wide-screen 16:9 support. You just pause the game and go into video settings and set it to 16:9 within the game. I've done it myself with GTA 3 and I think Vice City and San Andreas have that option too. Then it won't be stretched for GTA at least.

Trinitrons are super heavy in 27" plus, smaller seems hard to find. Finding the "right" model can be tough, many with component are models with weird problems. When my Trinitron crapped out I picked up a standard definition toshiba with component. Easy to hook up almost everything I own that looks best on a CRT using composite, s-video and component. I recommend these as well as strinitrons, they are quite good (if a step down from Trinitron). They weigh less and their seem to be many more of them and more of them in more manageable sizes (20-24 is almost a perfect size imo).

im kind of in the minority here, but i actually just prefer playing all my games on component. my reason is, that's what i played them on when i was a kid, so for the most authentic and nostalgic experience component on a CRT is the best even though it looks worse. i actually used a CRT TV with component cables all the way up to the xbox 360. i didn't really know what HD meant back then, until i got a flat screen monitor for my computer and realized how much better everything looked in 1080p.
@MrMario20116 жыл бұрын
No 480p? That's extremely disappointing, PS2 video output is already pretty poor but 480p can clean it up somewhat well, especially since trying to pull any HD resolution natively out of the PS2 is normally pretty finicky at best. If aspect ratio doesn't bug you, PS1 gameplay looks great! This seems to be a pretty nice PS1 HDMI solution if you want to use native hardware, but I'm sure the stretched aspect ratio will put off a lot of people. Not at all surprised that your Japanese PS1 could handle it as it's still a 60 Hz signal, a good curveball would have been trying out a PAL system to see if it displayed properly or had any odd behavior. Great review! Appreciate the honesty and tests done on it, again it looks to be a good PS1 HDMI solution for native hardware but I'm passing on this due to them omitting 480p signals. If I ever want HDMI specifically for my PS1, or if they release another revision of this which supports 480p, I'll nab it for sure.

Tony Horo - Respectfully, it sounds like you haven't attempted or researched higher resolutions on the PS2. Several games support 480p, many more can be forced using methods like OPL, and the PS2 supports video output up to 1080i. That's native right out of the PS2 if the games support the output setting, no upscaling. Not sure why you're saying this is "pretty much what a regular composite cable already did" when the output mode is clearly shown as RGB in system settings.

Thanks for the review. I just noticed this item on the LRG site and was curious about it. The lack of support for 480p (or higher) is disappointing. The lack of an aspect ratio switch also means the upscaler is always stretching to widescreen. Given that aspect ratio adjustment isn't something that's needed for an HDMI source since the TV can automatically detect the resolution, TVs generally don't have the option to force 4:3, they have options to stretch or zoom 4:3 sources to 16:9. In the end, while this could have been a cool product, some of the choices make it a bit of a let down.

@GhostRecon1416 жыл бұрын
1. iirc gta vice city has a widescreen toggle in the options menu which would make it display correctly 2. the reason PS1 games look so good is because 240p is exactly a third of 720p so it's doing an even line triple, whereas 480i has to be both deinterlaced and scaled and it's not mathematically even. this clearly was designed for PS1 and maybe some of the 240p PS2 titles like Disgaea 1. 3. the reason they were having trouble getting the cable to be compatible with both PS1 titles and higher display modes is because standard definition (240p/480i) uses RGBS and for whatever reason sony made higher output resolutions in RGB mode output in RGsB Sync-On-Green. if i had to guess, getting the cable to detect the switch between these two sync modes as well as compensating for it would have been too hard considering they were trying to keep the price down. 4. the idea behind the output stretching like that is that your TV is getting all the horizontal line data for the sake of giving the highest quality output possible. most tv's can squish the image back to 4:3 and in doing so theoretically the resulting 4:3 image will be sharper than if the cable squished it for you for what it's worth, this cable isn't meant for anyone who already has complex scaler setups or a decent method of capturing and/or using the component cables. it's for using a ps1 or ps2 on a modern tv that potentially only has HDMI inputs while bypassing the tv's scaler and deinterlacer for speed advantages. also, in the event they are using this with a PS1, most tv's have a built in usb port that could be used for powering the device. also, considering that most PS2 games with higher video modes require you to invoke them in really oddball ways, most casuals are going to play 480p compatible games in 480i anyways.

Pound should really rethink their marketing for this cable. It would probably have less complaints if they advertised it as a PS1 HDMI cable that also happens to work on PS2 but without support for higher resolutions. The fact that the name really pushes the PS2 angle, which it handles poorly, rather than the PS1 compatibility, where it does a bloody fantastic job, is a real shot in the foot in my opinion. I think consumers would be more willing to forgive the lack of 480p+ support if they said "This is a PS1 cable first and foremost" rather than "we sacrificed high-quality PS2 resolutions so it could also work on PS1".

Judging from your previous game room tour, you have a Vizio VX42L (or similar). If you press the “Wide” button on your remote, it will cycle through to “Normal” mode. This will show a 4:3 aspect ratio and display the games properly.

demonpride1975 , I’m running S-video and honestly it looks great. Sometimes I think people are are asking a little bit more out of these consoles than they can produce even with upscaling.

@@darthbukowski6894 yeah i use the component cables, and other then being a bit blurry, which could be due to it being on a flat screen tv. it's not as bad as i would hoped, that being said. you would think that it being a conversion, that the image would be a bit more detailed.

This is great for PS1 even if the aspect ratio isn’t ideal if your not able to change it on your T.V. But the fact that it doesn’t support 480p just makes this cable useless for PS2. Just pass on this and get component cables instead.

Can't you just set your screen to 4:3 and it wont be stretched anymore?
@nhh123456 жыл бұрын
That's what I was thinking. Setting the TV to 4:3 should force the image to the proper aspect ratio. It would be nice to get a confirmation that this works. I don't foresee any issue with it though. I have to do the same thing with my DVD player when I play 4:3 dvds (which is rarely).

I would too since you can use the OSSC with almost any console and you dont have to buy a seperate upscaler cable for every console you have. also the OSSC video quality, when adjusted to your console and TV, is way superior.

It means they decided to include 240p on the cable INSTEAD of 480p Why they couldn't have done both idk
@WedgeStratos6 жыл бұрын
From personal testing, the closest comparable option to HDMI is usually the component cables, but PS1 games seem to not behave well with those cables, thus requiring I have a composite connection as well. Also, as mentioned, games like Chrono Cross have distinct issues like 240p/480i switching, which no matter what system, PS1, PS2, PS3 or PSP, if your TV isn't able to cope with that, it's going to mess things up for you. Their claim is that supporting 480p caused conflicts with 240p support. Whatever that entails, this is the product we have. A very satisfactory PS1 HDMI cable that will do PS2 if you want it to.

The 4:3 stretch is a deal breaker. That's so ugly. That said, I'm really surprised your TV doesn't have a mode to force 4:3. I have an older Vizio that has that option on it BUT if it's scaling the image to 720p you won't be able to force a 4:3 even on TVs that have the option to do so.
@KoRnKnoTTeR6 жыл бұрын
SlyBeast I've never seen a TV that does NOT give you the option to go 4:3 if the signal is less than 720p.

I think the issue is with his TV, not the product. When some TVs detect a 720p signal they automatically display it in 16:9. Other TVs will let you change the aspect ratio to 4:3.

I think for me using a component to HDMI box would be more simple and look better, and probably cheaper considering I want to put both ps2 and of box on HDMI and buying 2 of these is probably more expensive than 2 component cables and a component to HDMI. plus I get the original aspect ratio
