Titan could you do a video on financing a machine? What’s a good deal? Things to watch out for? Etc, might not be the most interesting video but they don’t teach you that stuff at school. Love the content
@GrumpyMachinist2 жыл бұрын
Cliff note version. When it comes to financing a machine be mindful of debt to income, cash flow, and interest rate. Don't leverage the business for a machine on a future job you might get from a long term customer. Have the work already, then the company pockets the gains in productivity rather than the customer. Then if the customer implements cost cutting measures(government work) you have wiggle room. Don't buy a machine that will get you buy. Buy a machine with the bells and whistles. The extra costs will pay off in the end. *edit* Parts. Make sure you can get parts quickly from at least a stateside vendor with stock.

l love how clean your shop is. we run a couple of Spinner TTC300 dual turret machines but only one spindle. lot of issues with the part catcher not working. did a few 3d printed parts to stop chips falling through and jamming the conveyor and so on. biggest problem tho is, nobody set up a CAM department in the last 10 years. so usually even dual turret machines only run with one tool, one operation at a time since programming is complicated and few could even do it ... pretty sad since we could do so much more with them. (if they are not broken cause they have been treated badly and and haven't been maintained well)

Its kind of interesting when everyone talks about how fast their machine is compared to another model or brand. And, I have given this a lot of thought. To me, it is not as much as the machine as it is the cutter being used. The cutter to me is almost more important than the machine. A HAAS will do anything that 500K DMG will do. It might not be as fast, but it will do it. It all boils down to programming and the cutter(s) being used. Also, how long that cutter lasts is a huge deal. You pick the right tool for the job. Well, you also have to pick the right cutter for the job and understand the feeds/speeds required to use this cutter properly.
@GrumpyMachinist2 жыл бұрын
Certainly programming and tooling matters(alot) but machine rigidity matters brother. Top of the line tooling makes no difference if the machine can't handle the cutting parameters. A more rigid machine can make deeper rough cuts and mitigate the vibrations/harmonics of HSM.
@bobsbillets2 жыл бұрын
@@GrumpyMachinist Yeah, but you can only push a cutter so much. No matter how rigid, how much power, ect, you would be limited as to how much that cutter will take before it breaks, chips, or wears out.
@GrumpyMachinist2 жыл бұрын
@@bobsbillets Well, like most things, there's always limitations. We often have these conversations at the shop I manage. The hare vs tortoise scenario or just because we can doesn't mean we should. Like you and most shops, we are about repeatability but when it comes to competing against people that work for a bowl of rice a day, speed matters because time is money. Time is money is the key factor because customers are charged for time and material. The faster the part is done the cheaper it is(typically).

@MrXtacle2 жыл бұрын
I program and run one of these with a bar feeder. It's a great little machine! The only annoying thing is, that you cant use the pre-setter to measure tools in the lower, to use in the main spindle. I use a basemaster BM50 and set the Z length of the tools on the main chuck in G59. Hopefully your machine installers set the tool 0 for the turrets in the centre of the flats. For some reason the Doosan guys that installed ours set them up with an offset of 65mm in X and 29.5 in Z... Another problem, which is maybe fixed on your model, since it's a year newer, is that it doesn't keep tolerances for shit. We have temperature monitoring and scale adjustment on ours, but it doesn't work properly. So you'll start at 40.02mm on a diameter, and it will go up to 40.12 over the course of an hour, then down to 39.98 the next, then up to 40.02 again, and repeat that pattern over and over. Another issue, is that if you're milling in the main chuck, with the lower turret, the profile will be mirrored, so watch out for that.

Hello, I am a young machinist from North Carolina. I graduated from a 4 year vocational high school program with a diploma in Machine Technology. Over the last few years I have bounced around a few different companies to add skills to my resume. Most of the jobs I worked were extremely simple like CNC Laser operator/ programmer, and one job as a 3 axis CNC Machine operator. The question I will ask is, how can I bridge the gap from what I know now, to learning how to program and operate 4 and 5 axis machines. I feel like I am a relatively bright individual with a passion for learning, but I am having a hard time finding a job to really increase my skill set because any 4 or 5 axis position requires years of experience. Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated! Best regards :)
