As an owner of one of those 6 year old blades I have to say this thing has lasted much better than I thought it would. The 870m is a little lacking now a days and the bezels are huge but it's got a great screen and has done what I've needed (sometimes pretty loudly). Good to know the memory isn't soldered on and there are 2 nvme slots in the new ones.

Last week I picked up a 2018 blade 15 that someone stripped out the screw holes at the bottom, and pried the bottom of the laptop off. It has a i7-8750h and a 1060. I negotiated it down to $250. Luckily I found a new bottom for $35 on eBay, added another stick of ram, and for $350 I feel like I got an AMAZING deal. The only thing that was bad was I had to extract the broken screws from the bottom which took forever.

I’m doing a similar video series right now on an Alienware 17 from 2014. If you haven’t figured out the driver issue yet, you can just .inf mod current drivers and they work fine. The core is supported, they just cut off support for the 880m and 870m for some reason. I’ve tested pretty thoroughly, works fine.

A bit late in the fight, but just for the records : I owned this new Razer Blade and it had a real big major flaw. The battery inflates the more it's used, which is normal by itself. It took about 6 to 8 month of every day use to be fully inflate. I had to replace it twice myself. No big deal, time to time maintenance is good so every time I took the occasion to clean the inside, undust, etc. BUT the bigger the battery is, the lesser you can use the buttons of the track pad because of the internal pressure caused by the fatty fat fat battery pack.

I have a similar laptop from the blade 14 generation (dell latitude e6440) but I was able to upgrade the CPU to an i7-4800MQ and 16GB of ram and windows is super snappy. In addition I added an egpu to the msata/mpcie port for gaming. I did have it connected to the expresscard port but had reliability issues.

I have the same laptop, and its the best laptop money can buy IMO. Most gaming laptops look corny as hell and are chunky bois. This one has the form factor like a MacBook and you can bring it literally anywhere without it being a hassle, its such a beasts, and who cares if you hands make it a little dirty dude, its really easy to clean off afterwards, unless you planned on returning it after the video, then that makes sense.

Oh, and that poor GTX 870 has a huge old Intel iGPU bottleneck, where as the RTX 2060 which is already more powerful has a newer Intel iGPU bottleneck. This is because the integrated displays are physically connected to the iGPU so the signal goes through it anyway. You can fix that by using an external monitor and turning the integrated display off in Windows (although the backlight will most likely stay on).
