The Hedge Knight is the first novella of the "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" book by George RR Martin. New reader Laura and I take a look at the highlights, the characters, the moral quanderies, some themes, the wholesome moments and the dark and gritty ones.

The Hedge Knight is a short story by George R. R. Martin that first appeared in the Legends anthology, a collection of stories by various fantasy authors such as Stephen King, Robert Jordan, and Terry Pratchett. It was edited by Robert Silverberg. The story was later adapted into a graphic novel by Mike S. Miller. It is the first of the "Dunk and Egg" stories.
The story takes place in 209 AC, some 90 years before the events in A Song of Ice and Fire. It tells the tale of how Dunk took the mantle of a hedge knight and met his squire, a young boy named Egg, on his way to compete in a tournament at Ashford Meadow. Ser Arlan of Pennytree dies, leaving his squire, Dunk, to take up his armor and continue his journey to Ashford, where he plans to compete in a tourney. On the way, Dunk meets a boy named Egg, who becomes his squire. At the tourney, Dunk faces challenges, including nearly being barred for lack of proof of knighthood, until Prince Baelor Targaryen vouches for him. After defending a girl from Prince Aerion Targaryen’s cruelty, Dunk is arrested and chooses trial by combat, where he must find six champions to fight alongside him. Despite betrayals and setbacks, Dunk’s team prevails, but Prince Baelor is mortally wounded. Aerion's father, Maekar, later offers Dunk a position in his household, but Dunk opts to travel, taking Egg as his squire. They set off to Dorne in search of the puppeteer Dunk saved.

I’m really glad yall are covering these novellas! As just pure stories these are my favorite that GRRM has written by far. The main story has so many intricate details and that foster speculation and theories, but The Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are just good stories.

The way you describe Dunk made me think he'skind off like how Perrin sees himself (at least in the first few books)

He’s not only the unlikely because a lot of Targaryen in line to throne are needed dying but also politicking was ultimately needed till Aegon V ascends to the throne. Let’s not forget they call for another Great Council to debate who follows his dead father Maekar on the throne cause there is still offspring from at least 2 of his brothers, the Blackfyre‘s and I believe even some cousins through his uncle Rhaegel

Thank you for your review and commentary. I don't know anything about this part of the story but you two make me want to read it now.

Read all the Dunk and Egg novellas individually before the three story compilation was released. I know there are "doubts" about GRRM finishing the series - but for some reason I still have hope. EVEN for the additional two Dunk and Egg stories that at one time were also promised. :)

@@matthewmurdick I've tried to not think about if he finishes too much so I'll only be happily surprised if he does 😆💜

The problem I had with these stories is that Martin 'spoiled' the ending so we know that Duncan ends up in the king's guard; which means he's supposed to be celibate. Therefor any romance is doomed from the start.

Not necessarily! He can marry (or not marry but have an affair) and have children… the woman dies and then he enters the KG! He can also have an affair and father children while being a KG… he would be neither the first nor the last doing so

thus the 'doomed' in my comment.

@@mndrew1 if that’s your definition of doomed… well, then every romance in any story and real life is doomed cause no one lives forever and we know at least 1 option how every romance ends… death which is inevitable

Ser Duncan is a perfect example that a good man with good intentions can ultimately cause more damage then an evil character! Don’t get me wrong, I like his character, but Baelors death in the end is the result of his good intentions and kind heart and the realm gets robbed too soon of the most likely best ruler from the Targaryen line and the smallfolk suffers

@@michelmorio8026 I think pinpointing that event on Dunk might be a little bit of an over simplification. I'd put more of the blame on others.

@@roadtotarvalon don‘t get me wrong… I don‘t blame him! It‘s just typical GRRM that actions have consequences and often it’s the good actions that lead to terrible outcome, especially for the masses. Of course we cheer when he stands up for Tanselle who gets mistreated simply because Aerion can due to his noble position… BUT his actions have consequences which result in Baelor‘s death which ultimately might have caused more damage and hurt more people then Tanselle getting some fingers broken! And Dunc himself knows that too, cause he has to deal with it (and himself) in the following stories and I would assume he deals with that for the rest of his life
