We can volitionally direct our attention and focus, thereby directing the automatic process of perception. It's like steering a car where there are hundreds of automatic processes inside the car, but that doesn't mean that those processes are not automatic just because it can be directed via steering.

j. j. gibson and henri bergson both deserve a look at from objectivists in my opinion. stephen e. robbins has a youtube channel which has a series of videos going into great detail of both.

Next time perhaps you guys can discuss Perceptual Control Theory championed by William T Powers. His book " Behavior , the Control of Perception " introduced this fascinating theory.

but it is. if you stare into space with an undirected gaze you perceive nothing. there's just an indistinct blur without any recognition of entities. but if you direct your attention entities become distinct.

@@jocr1971That’s not my experience of perception. In my experience, percepts are automatic, directed or not.
