I am lucky enough to be getting my Megane E Tech the first week of Dec 22 here in Blighty. It’s a glorious EV in looks, presence and driving. You have really undersold the tech. Google and Android Automotive kick MG tech out of the park, there is just no comparison between them. Speed of response, navigation with recommended charging stops where your battery is conditioned in readiness, watch KZbin on info screen whilst recharging due to access to Play Store (no phone required) and I could go on. Talking about charging, great if you can get a 130 KWh charger but with 22Kwh charger on board, overall charging experience with what is available in the UK currently, it’s pretty solid in the Megane. Regen braking with the paddles behind the steering wheel on twisty country roads is akin to down shifting and engine braking as you approach a bend but with instant torque as you power out. It is thoroughly enjoyable. Then there’s fit and finish. Some of the misalignment and inconsistent panel gaps I have seen on MG4 models does not promote quality in comparison to the Megane. Yes, I am paying around £6,500 more for my Techno model over the top of the range MG Trophy but each and every time I am behind the wheel, I just know it’s an investment that I will revel in. Answering another comment 5 yr warranty and 8 yrs on the battery with the Megane.

Back wheel drive in snowy conditions…. good luck. Talking about EV‘ s regarding the change of paradigm and then the so called knock out argument front wheel drive is ridiculous. I did a test drive with the MG4. It is a fine car…..but…..steering pilot is DANGEROUS. The assistance systems of the Megane are far superior.

@@rawu8053 drivers drive a car. Tesla auto pilot has already killed 3 motorcyclists in the past year alone. Drive your car. The fwd byd atto3 struggles for grip on wet roads - fwd is part of the problem - as the car accelerates, the front suspension unloads and the front drive tyres loose grip. Under acceleration, a rwd drive tyres have greater grip due to mass tranfer. Not to mention that fwd understeer terribly under when cornering under acceleration. You are asking the front tyes to do too much - steer and drive. Yes, I have owned at various times: 2 fwd cars, 6 rwd cars, 1 awd suv, 3 motor bikes, 2x 80 series landcruisers & 2x GU Patrols for work, so let me tell you, fwd is not nearly as good as rwd as far as being fun to drive in the hills.

Good vidéo. Thank you. Both cars are also for sale in France. For the MG4 price starts at 28990 € with the small 51 KWh battery and goes up to to 34990 for the luxury edition with 64 KWh battery. The Renault Megane E-Tech that starts at 37200 € with the 40 KWh battery and 130 hp engine and goes up to 46990 € with 60 KWh battery, 220 hp engine and iconic equipments. (All prices are bonus excluded) So clearly the MG4 is significantly cheaper. It is putting the low end version of the Renault EV seriously at risk and at the other extreme of the spectrum the high end version is almost as expensive as the new Standard Model Y which is way better in every aspects (engine power, space, infotainment system, navigation, charging, resell value on the market...). Don't get me wrong : I'm not saying the Renault Megane E-TEch is not a good car. It is. But in term of pricing, it is not well positioned I believe. Sure it is a succes in France right now because it is a car manufactured in France but the competition in other ountries will be fierce.

Couple of corrections about the Megane: 1. 11 kW is still 3 phase. The highest you go on AC per phase is 32A generally, only Zoe went 64A and crazy American standards allow up to 80A, but speaking about Europe, the highest single phase AC charging speed is 7 kW. 2. You generally don't want a 3 phase charger at home, the components are much costlier, the units themselves are much more expensive and if you go DIY it's still a lot of extra work over something you generally don't even use because a 7 kW charge overnight is fine for every scenario barring nuclear apocalypse. That said, what Megane does bring to the table with 22 kW charger (see Zoe experience) is a practical ability to use an EV without a home charger by utilizing public AC chargers which are essentially everywhere so that you can be efficiently topping up while you do your groceries etc. MG4 would practically require a DC charger to do so which are obviously more rare. This also concerns leisure travel in obscure locations that don't and won't have any DC insfrastructure. 3. Megane doesn't have 1 pedal mode, it was intentional design. Renault said they wanted the drivers to keep the muscule memory for distinction between slowing down an stopping completely. But this dosen't really affect efficiency at all, it's just a preference.
@mondotv4216
@mondotv4216 2 жыл бұрын
The charger components for three phase are not "much costlier". A three phase EVSE capable of 32A is practically identical to a single phase EVSE capable of 32A apart from the extra wiring. Nearly all the negotiation happens on the sense wires (CANBUS). The onboard charger is more expensive and the install cost can be much higher but the Tesla Wall charger V3 is the cheapest EVSE in Australia and it can do single phase or three phase out of the box.

@@mondotv4216 it's not canbus, I happen to be an expert on this topic :) Three phase contactor, energy metering and RCD are significantly more sophisticated that single phase ones. If that is the case in Australia for off the shelf units, that must be some marketing artifact.

One minor correction: at 10:37 you say the Megane can come to a complete stop with one pedal driving - it cannot. There is no 100% one pedal driving in the Megane, you will need to press the brake to stop the car completely, so no advantage here. However, please also note that the care uses regenerative braking when using the brake pedal. I other words: lifting the foot off the accelerator to brake is only for the driver's comfort, he might as well just switch regen mode off so he can "sail" whith his foot off the accelerator and he will still regenerate energy by pressing the brake pedal. This might even be more efficient.

I am considering both cars as they offer almost similar specs and features but a lot of reviews kinda miss that the Magane has Android Automotive built in to the car. That means no more need for a phone connection like android auto. Voice commands for AC, demister, etc. Battery info is connected to google maps so the system computes where to charge and how long to charge just like a tesla. MG does not have that. I tried it and it's AI assistant is just not very good. For a tech person like me I really appreciate that. Yes, MG's price is significantly less but it is also out of stock here in Ireland and the wait time is 6 months.

11kw home charging is not single phase! If you put in a 11kw home charger then it's 3 phase and very slow to charge any EV that does not charge at 11kw or higher, for example the BYD Atto 3 would be charging at only 3.6kw!
@itekani

Yes, the Megane will only get 7,2kW with one phase. With 11kW onboard charger you'll get 3,6kW with one phase, if you don't have a Tesla. Tesla 3/Y at least can utilize 1, 2 or 3 phases up to 11kW. That's pretty neat.

(The MG's boot was too small). The sterile, poor build quality, horrid interior, ugly Tesla is so dated compared to the Renault. It's tech is so 'yesterday'. Brilliant move by Renault going to the experts, Google! By the way, Renault say the 0-60 time is 7.5 Seconds. Independent tests have clocked it at 6.9 Seconds (that's Mini Cooper S territory but with that lovely instant torque).......how typically French, underplaying. Unlike the Italians, which always exaggerate!

Tesla has the acceleration but Model 3 is not even close to the same level in ride comfort and you know, in the being a car part. LFP is god awful in our harsh winters. Cupra is a great ride, but doesn't have the quality and the battery system takes a beating in the winter. Add to that the option to slow charge in 22kw in cities, where we have a ton of chargers but not in front of apartment buildings, is a godsend. Never owned a Renault in my life but I like how they stayed right in the sweet spot with everything with this car.

You could buy both in France too. I’ve tried both and although the megane is good, the value for money is just impossible to beat. The MG4 has rendered Renault EV catalogue obsolete imo.

I know this video is a year old now but I have driven both cars in 2024 and I chose the Megane. It's just a higher spec and more refined car overall with the MG4 feeling like a much cheaper car, which it is of course.

The Trophy is £31k, you're thinking of the SE LR at £28.5k. Also, the LR isn't a "no brainer" it's NCM whereas the SR is LFP which is much better in terms of cycles (2-5x), thermals and numerous other things. The no brainer is the SE.

If the comfort of the Megane is anything like that of the Zoe ZE50, and the efficiency is better than the MG4, then I'm sold on the Megane. It also looks much better than the MG. I've no issues with front wheel drive, and find it to be much better on slippery surfaces than a rear wheel drive car. All wheel drive is clearly the way to go for best all round traction, when roads are slippery, but for most of the time the added costs are not worth the return.

No domestic properties in the UK has 3 phase electric, so there’s no advantage in the UK for having the Megane. All home chargers are only capable of 7/7.4kW chargers…
@godofdun
@godofdun 2 жыл бұрын
Overall I do agree with the conclusion as that is a big price difference. That being said I do think that faster home charging will become more and more important as ev adoption ramps up. Double plug home evse is very expensive but if you have 2 evs both with faster L2 charging you can do with just one plug and save that money.

It will if you have the ability to do the faster home charging. I have a 7Kw charger, had it 8 years now, come home plug in, go about my evening and in the morning the cars charged. I don’t know how long it took it just ‘happens’

This comparison is not only spot on, but also triggers some questions. Are Chinese cars safe, or are driving data downloaded to China? Does MG cover their costs, or are they subsidied in a long term scheme to build scale? Will Western car manufacturers seek import protection?

There's no doubt MG4 is going to seduce a lot of people who cannot afford to pay 40000€ for an EV. Not the best car, but the price is very very agressive. Well, you just need to cross fingers to avoid any major breakdown...what a poor aftersale network they have in Europe. I think it is like a bet : sometime you win, sometime you lose...

In a Jon Stewart show, they actually had a thing about a Chinese factory putting up nets for all the workers trying to commit suicide because of what they are asked to do at the pay they get. Europe might have to put an incentive to buy in a way that lets their workers work at a living wage.

The finish on the Renault is better but the ergonomics are terrible. The seating position is really low, space in the back is tiny, 4 storks coming out behind the steering wheel with switches from the early 90s. Renault Zoe is a much more ergonomic car and a similar size. MG 4 is exceptionally good and I'd buy one of those every time or an Atto 3.

Also Hyundai Ioniq which is only beaten by Tesla Model 3. But you get less compromises in general with a pure EV. Next time you see a Niro EV/e-Niro, look underneath. The battery pack is 5 cm lower than the rest of the car. 🤔

There is very little profit in a gas car. Ev's are more profitable and will allow much greater margins for price reductions in the future. There are too many parts in a gas car in the past a car company made these parts in-house the profit was put on the finished car price. Today, parts are made under sub-contract and have profit added before delivery to the car manufacturer. When this is all added up to the final price of the car there is little room to add a profit, hence the gas car companies are going broke.

The Megane E is front wheel drive. The MG4 is rear wheel drive. There is a massive difference in driving experience. All the reviews are praising the MG4 driving dynamics. Front wheel drive on a ev is a crime, and just shows that the Megane E was not designed from the ground up to be only an ev.

It depends what you prefer. The boot space is 20 liters higher capacity for the renault. Dimensions? Renault 4200x1768x 1505 MG4 4287x1836x1504 Also the renault can tow 900 kg vs the mg's 500. It also supports guard rails where the mg does not.

There are two factors you didn't consider. Firstly the World geopolitical turmoil which couldl lead to difficulties in getting spares and warranty repairs undertaken for the MG4 . It could also make an investment in a MG4 a bad choice. Secondly what is the efficiency and gross weight of each car? Renault has learnt that light weight EV's are more efficient and the Megane is much lighter than most similar cars resulting in it needing a smaller battery (even less weight) . The MG4 is a very good car but I would only consider purchase on a PCP deal, let someone else take the geoploltical risk.
