"For years, worker advocates and some government officials have argued that Amazon’s strict production quotas lead to high rates of injury for its warehouse employees. And for years, Amazon has rejected the criticism, arguing that it doesn’t use strict quotas, and that its injury rates are falling close to or below the industry average.
On Sunday, the majority staff of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, which is led by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, published an investigation that found that Amazon itself had documented the link between its quotas and elevated injury rates."

I worked at a distribution center and they work the sh@t out of you. The people are awesome people, even the managers I had, but the company is soulless and you have to get it done. Here the Amazon drivers do not work for Amazon , but are contracted by third party companies even though they wear Amazon clothes and drive Amazon vans.

I pleaded to Kim to assign me a different job. I was denied, Kim told me “That’s what your rousted for”! So at 5’1” and a 106 pounds, I really struggled to pull pallets (at least 2,000 pounds) with a manual pallet jack. As a result, I have an L4 sublaxated disc. I swear to this statement and have the medical records to prove it. Amazon is a cruel company to work for.

9 times out of 10 the management that sets the production numbers have never ever touched a package or done the work in a warehouse. These are repetitive movement injurie, doing the same motion for hours. It took years and the insurance company to get UPS to recognize repetitive movement work injuries.

A warehouse I used to work at would raise production rates based on management doing the job for 1 hour then multiplying it by 8 hours, not taking anything else into account such as bathroom breaks, problem orders, the fact that walking for 8 straight hours is going to make you slow down as the day goes on and even more as the week goes on. By the time I quit the production rates had been raised so high that you would literally have to run for most of your shift in order to hit the rates. I worked there for 6 years and at first the rates were totally achievable but by the time I quit they had more than doubled the rates. During covid we had record breaking profits but they kept saying they couldn't afford to give us raises. Best decision ever made was walking out and never going back.
@haroldwright2758

@ghostrider_414 at ups a supervisor would do the job for 10 minutes saying that it was a demonstration of said job and really not do a good job. On the road they would reduce plan packages and said you should repeat your performance when they increase the day they're not riding with you.

Im glad your husband can attest to the BS and unrealistic expectations i dealt with while delivering for amazon. The more packages you do the more you will get due to their their algorithm. I used to skip lunch and breaks and still would be behind sometimes. I also had to urinate in the van because no time to travel to a bathroom. It’s a common known thing that guys carry gatorade bottles just in case.

Worked at Amazon for a year and a half and maybe it depends on the site but I was treated fairly and even given a pay raise a couple times without even asking. Their attendance and work policies such as relaxed dress code, etc. are also pretty lax. Tbh though, the nature of the work is just boring and repetitive and really calls out for eventual automation. Humans can only be rewarded so much before they finally call it quits. I understand Amazon's attitude as reported in the past that they don't expect workers to work in their position on a permanent basis because really, it's not good for the long term for anyone.

So it's the consumer's fault instead of Amazon?! This is the problem in the US. We blame the consumer instead of the employer. We tell people not to eat at restaurants if they can't tip instead of saying the restaurant should pay its employees a livable wage. They are doing the same here! Go to the store and get what you want instead of Amazon staffing accordingly to meet the customer demand!

@oliviastratton2169 I agree that consumers have power and should use it. But that doesn't always work. Plus some people don't have other options based on where they live and the work schedules they have. The businesses fight to not have to be ethical. This is why we have poor consumer protection in the US. Again, you're blaming the consumers instead of blaming Amazon for being a shitty company.

Two days! I ordered something and received it four hours later. It used to take two days. When they first started it was more like four days. Thing is, I don’t want my stuff that early. A week is fine. Most of the time longer. No one asked for these quick deliveries but Amazon. Now lots of customers have come to depend on these quick deliveries. The results are horrible for the worker and even the customer. All these boxes and workers just dropping off packages anywhere they can. These quick deliveries have left me out dropping packages off at my neighbors home. I got a package for a fourth floor apartment and I live in a two story home . I order 12 cans of tuna and got a dog muzzle. The poor things are moving so fast that quality has given way to quantity. Get rid of these quick deliveries!

I worked at Amazon twice before, during the winter season. They weren’t bad at all to work for. It’s EASY to meet those quotas, if you’re not dumb. And also not lazy. Some ppl just don’t want to work. Seriously, it was one of the easiest 8 hour shifts I ever worked. After two hours, they give you a 15 minute break. Another 2 hours, 30 minute lunch. After another two hours, an additional 15 minute break. About two hours later, your shift is over. Plus, if you’re smart, they move you to different tasks after the stoppages. I’ve worked “difficult” jobs. Working at Amazon was definitely not even close to hard.

Like any company, I’m customer service experiences are a mixed bag. I’ve been an Amazon customer for a couple of decades, and order quite a bit. I have to say that their customer service has actually been quite good, making it an easy choice for me to continue using them over the years. In fact, their customer service is one reason why I’ve gone with them over some other retailers in making some purchases. That said, as I learn more about their labor practices, I’ve backed down on Amazon purchases. I did not renew Prime this year. I’m relying more on local retailers. I realize Amazon isn’t the only company with such issues, but that doesn’t make it okay.

I’ve worked at an Amazon warehouse for 3 years. Much of the problem comes from customers not knowing that items that go through Amazon require much more handling than going through a grocery or department store. (I’ve stocked shelves at Target & Walmart too. The reason is because of the massive selection through a single company. (ebay & etsy also have a massive selection, but through individual sellers). Prime contributes to the problem also. Beverages & liquid laundry detergent are some of the biggest problems. Please get these locally! Or, switch to laundry detergent sheets, a water filter pitcher, sodastream machine, gatorade powder.

Incorrect, Picks per hour. Each employee gets a "pick list", usually updated several times a day, if not a few times an hour. On this pick list are individual items, with a count number, like 53792 x 10. So whatever item number 53792 is, 10 of them, that's 1 pick. Now multiple that by 216-266 per hour.

If everyone quits delivering and you guys are forced to go back in store to get products..... guess what, then you guys would be outraged wanting to riot 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ I dont think you understand how much product and volume is moved through the amazon umbrella. Also are you really that concerned about other people being paid a little more? Whats it to you, cant talk down on someone ? Tsk grow tf up and mind your own business.

What blows my mind is that we even need to look into that. If you goto the store by foot what is more likely to cause an injury? Walking or jogging? How about attempting to break a gold metal running time? Dont get me wrong i am practical as well. I cant remembered who said it but we have always had, as a species a certain tolerance to injury and death "if we really cared then all the speed limits would be 20mph" but the employer is still responsible for putting in reasonable limits. If the employees are saying its to much to the point they dont show up for work, THEN IT'S TO MUCH!

OMG, don't you guys get it? They're not getting injured so that you could get your items in two days. If everyone was used to four days delivery, Amazon would still hire too few workers and exploit them. The number of staff and delivery time are two different things. I mean, you can get your delivery in two days even in a fair system. Here in Poland I also get my stuff in two days or sometimes in one day, even from stores that have their own warehouses, which are still the majority. (Multiple stores on one platform, Allegro, which is more popular in Poland than Amazon, because it's better :)

Amazon undercuts local shops and other small online shops with their "free" shipping and "get it by tomorrow morning" claims. That attracts people who want their stuff immediately -- "why should I drive downtown at lunch when I can get it dropped off before I finish breakfast?"
@jeremyf9124
@jeremyf9124 15 сағат бұрын
I’ve worked in an Amazon fulfillment center (warehouse) for 3 years. The speed at which you get your items depends on what you order. Amazon carries so many items that there’s no way that all warehouses have all items. If you order multiple uncommon items, some will need to be transferred from one warehouse to another before the items are packed together and Items from Amazon require much more handling than from a department or grocery store (I’ve stocked shelves at Target & Walmart). So PLEASE STOP ORDERING LIQUIDS. They are dense, heavy, leak. Use a water filter instead of Liquid Death, Gatorade powder, a Sodastream machine, laundry detergent sheets.

At the site I worked, that policy comes and goes and there seems to be new supervisors every few months. They try to be strict at times, but I think they notice people leaving so they become more lax and the cycle repeats itself

Thats not true. Workers aren't being injured because i want a package in 2 days or for some people in 4 hours apparently. Workers are being injured because people like bezos dont want to pay enough by hiring enough employees to do the work. Dont forget money's only value comes from labor. The more you squeeze out of someone the more you make.

Tell Bezos to double the number of employees and halve the quota. Heck, he could make them work under 40 hours a week to avoid health care. And he can be applauded about adding more jobs.

Wos hints at the customers being part of the problem. They definitely are. Right now I'm waiting on a claim for a lost product with a carrier with Amazon. But I also recognize there are real people probably struggling with a million packages in the distribution centers. I used to work for FedEx for several peak seasons. I get it. Is Amazon the bigger problem or the consumer??
@ritaobrian6551
@ritaobrian6551 12 сағат бұрын
You know that you’re blaming the consumer, the consumer is why the business stays in place and the employee has the job. However, why don’t they hire more? People is really the answer to that question.

At Amazon... SOME can do the job with NO PROBLEM or INJURIES & some can't.... Everyone is not cut out for every job. @woman: Your husband did not work for amazon... Your husband worked for a 3rd party contractor. If you notice no real amazonians are striking, It's only third party contractor employees... That's because. We love our job the pay and the excellent benifits (I guarantee we have better health care benefits that anybody on this panel) ... We are so tired of you all lying about the company.We work for... Just about everything you have talked about is an absolute lie! And there is a special place in hell for People who are so jealous of a man's money that they will intentionally malign his company. Getting steered away from medical attention? Because workers go to their doctor first before going to the company's doctor in order to file a workman's comp claim. This is standard practice. No one prevents you from seeing your own physician, just follow the same procedures that have been practiced since before I was born. Your issues are political. The politicians need to change these practices.
