I went from 2.5 to 3.0 when I started driving my 3rd shot then 5th shot drop. It feels like I can get into the kitchen better than doing a third shot drop.

It sucks that the new serve rules were so last-minute that people were showing up at the tournament not knowing what the rule was, but once people adjust the new rule will be way better than the old one. The existing volley serve rules are a mess. They are impossible to enforce, even at the pro level with referees, without slow-motion replay on every serve. And it's even worse at the rec level because people don't understand the rules AND they can't enforce them even when they do understand. In a perfect world, the only thing the serve rules would regulate are: the ball has to be hit below the height of the net, and no spin is added to the ball except by the paddle. The drop serve rules already do this perfectly, and in the easiest possible way: it's much better to regulate the drop so that it becomes impossible to hit the ball above a certain height than it is to judge the actual height of the paddle while it's moving at top speed. The new PPA serve is much closer to this ideal than the old one was. I hope this becomes widely adopted after they've given the pros enough time to adjust and work out the kinks.

I'm not disagreeing with your issue with the volley serve, but USA Pickleball has been very reluctant to write a new volley serve rule because it would cause millions of players in the world to change their serve motion. That is a steep hill to climb. One of the reasons the drop serve was implemented was to address exactly your concerns with the volley serve. It gave players another option for serving, without mandating anything. The reason the drop serve was not mandated is the same; it would cause every player to change. These new serve rules are only for PPA pros. The APP pros are not mandated in the same way. What I find interesting is that no one, and I mean no one, has suggested this new PPA pro-serve rule to USA Pickleball in the last four years, if ever. It does, however, reflect one of the advantages the PPA has in not being sanctioned; they can experiment with these kinds of things, hopefully for the betterment of the sport.

These 'new' service rules are only for pros at the PPA. They do not apply to anyone else. Jordan, you and Caden can't say that enough, otherwise, the players who are your target audience and listen to this podcast will think that those rules apply to them. That is not the case.

If this trial experimental rule eventually was adopted and became a universal rule for USA pickleball, this would totally screw up my backhand slice serve. I realize pros don't hit a backhand slice serve So they are not thinking about this. I hope they do give this consideration if this rule eventually gets more widely adopted.
