We're heading up into the mountains for a weekend of boondocking in our 2016 Fleetwood Bounder 36E Class A Motorhome! A lot of you have been asking about gas motorhome engine noise (because the engine is in the front) and how the new rig handles going up steep grades. This Bounder has a Ford V10 and we have been very happy with how well it goes uphill and the engine noise really isn't that bad, but you'll just have to hear for yourself so come along for a ride!
One of our Roadrunners invited us up to this beautiful boondocking spot NW of Divide, CO. Thanks Christy!

It's just $$$. That's all. The memories and life experiences are priceless. Enjoy. Every time I take my bus out there is something to attend to. Not major things just little things. You will have the same experience. Just accept it and have fun. My father owned 7 motor homes and now I have one. I understood that when we purchased. Nothing better than making great memories.

We had really good luck with our last RV - 18k miles towed and we only had to replace tires and a few small things like lights and vent fans. Hopefully that luck sticks around with this rig too!

You may want to consider getting either Snap Pads, or Hush Pads for your jack feet. Reason being, that if the ground get s wet, your jack feet will sink right in the ground, go unloved, and may have a heck of a time getting slides in. Also, if you are in RV parks, or on asphalt in the summer, the jack feet, without pads, can sink in the asphalt and do some damage. Nice rig - enjoy!

This is great. Glad that you folks are sharing your class a experience. I'm surprised at how much noise and rattling you have going on. I have an 03 Itasca Horizon 39WD and thankfully it doesn't rattle unless we are on a rough road. We've camped for years with our toy hauler and have now stepped up to the class a. We've done 2 trips and so we are just getting acquainted with how everything works. Thanks again for sharing.

Great video. Thanks for sharing. I have a tip you can try when going up and down hills. To avoid transmission gear hunting, shift out of overdrive, try to avoid large throttle movements, and try to keep your RPM up. Also, the best practice for going down the hill is to be in the same gear going down as you were going up. I think your Ford chassis has a tow/hall mode. If you do, turn that on and that should help you as well. Safe travels!
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daniel! Going up that particular stretch of road is a pain because of a bunch of slow corners. Even in a car you have to slow down a lot so you lose momentum over and over again. Coming back down was a breeze - those curves actually helped temper my speed a lot and I was barely braking at all except when entering the turns. Even without tow'haul on it was very well behaved going downhill.

Yes on the wood that you say is 18 to 20 inches away. Then thought must be a drop down bed. I once had a 79 journey that also had a drop down bed. Top speed was 65 flooded 70 down hill lol. 440 engine. Now a 20 footer 73 Dodge 360. Like the old ones lol. Easy to park as if it was a van lol. Ok thanks on the reply. Blessed weekend.

Good first drive. We often camp on off-level spots that cause challenges with the auto-levelers, so we carry a tote full of foot-long 2x4s and a dozen of the orange plastic LEGOs to stack under the low side jacks. We also carry a 4 ft. carpenter’s level under the dinette to check level (often that little green light LIES!). And if all else fails, use the bathroom door test - if it swings open or shut all by itself, you’re not level!😀
@Five2Go

We're not planning to camp like this much at all. Boondocking to us is a night in front of a Walmart to break up a long drive 😂😂😂

Are you planning on flat towing your Ford? You can reduce noise on the V10 by putting Dynomat hood insulation under the doghouse. Its important to watch out for rough pavement, as it not only makes for a rough ride, it can damage your suspension. Whats with the blue painters tape on the dash? 5 star tuning is basically reprogramming your shift points on your transmission among other computer program improvements. When leveling we use an actual level to verify level when manually leveling. Phone leveling apps work good too. Happy travels!
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
The current plan is to tow that car and have Erin follow in the van with the two youngest. We may sell the van though, we keep going back and forth on it. The painters tape is for an extremely annoying chirp coming from those two spots of plastic rubbing together.

When I had my diesel pusher I always put towels in the cabinets and pantry to muffle the sounds. It helps a lot on the dishes.
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
We're collecting towels and some other materials for dampening once we put dishes in there, but for now it's just the rattles of the dash and some other parts that we're going to work on...
@hoss1003
@hoss1003 4 жыл бұрын
Great Terra Cam. To eliminate some dash rattles, take screws out of dask and put thin rubber washers or silicone, between where mounted. Rattling dishes, you can put paper towels between them. I noticed your floor rug was curling up on corners, roll them up backwards when storing and it will reverse the curl and flatten out when in use. Good luck..
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
Great tip about the rubber washers - I'm seriously thinking about dismantling the dash and/or adding another support under it over near the passenger seat. It just hangs out in space and is really bouncy.

Ours fill for gas is on the rear, we love it! We usually fill in parallel to the road gas station or truck stops. As far as the guy with the trailer you were too kind. The guy had a RV so he should know better than to expect you to move for him, it’s called planning out your moves in advance he know that, but would of learned it if he had to sit and wait.

Am enjoying your videos. You have made your RV very homey. My question is about your curtains. What are you going to do when you travel in hot climates? We have have total blackout shades and in warm climates the coach gets very hot with two air conditioners going and the blinds down. The insulation on an RV leaves a lot to be desired. Travel safely, enjoy and stay healthy! Thank you for sharing your adventures.
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
One word: reflectix. Even if we had left the blackout roller shades up, as you noted, it would still get very hot because those black shades are "catching" all of that solar heat inside the rig and it's going to leak in. If you cut reflectix to the size of your windows and cover them with that, it will instead reflect a LOT more of that heat instead of letting it bleed in. We did the same in our last RV and just put it up in the sunny windows depending on what direction we were parked. Yeah, it's kinda ugly, but it's a life saver. Here's the stuff: amzn.to/2X0dH6E
@LifeWithTheRVkeys
@LifeWithTheRVkeys 4 жыл бұрын
@@Five2Go what about white roller shades instead? We leave ours down when it warm too and they do not seem to absorb heat. Also, get something to cut heat and light from the ceiling vents. Helps preserve your plastics as well.

So many people tout that as a feature like it's going to make things easier. It wasn't a big deal somewhere like Buc-ee's where there's a ton of space, but in these smaller stations it kinda sucks to have to pull SO FAR forward! It's also harder to eyeball from the driver's seat, and the rear camera doesn't help either... Any tricks?

Gas motorhomes are also way lighter than that. Ours is only 22k gross, which is about as heavy as they get really. The cost differences were really the biggest deciding factor in why we went with gas, plus we didn't know if we'd like it compared to truck and trailer. Now that we've had the Bounder for almost two years now we're in love with motorhomes and our next one will probably be a DP just so we can have more interior space.

Vector will get used to it. I have traveled with several different animals over the years and they just had to become accustomed to the new noises in each rig. One cat that went on many long trips was always a nervous wreck until we slept the first night. After that it was home and she loved it.

He was calm for a lot of the ride, but any sharp or loud noises wound him back up. He will have the option of riding in with Erin in the van and he'll be more comfortable there. Once we were set up he loved it! In our last rig he couldn't really see out unless he climbed up on top of the couch. In this one he can see straight out the screen door from anywhere in the living room. He was a big fan of that 😍

My Fleetwood Pace Arrow had the gas filler in the same spot, but my rig was 33' long. It is a pain, but you'll get used to it. At Costco the hose will reach from either side.

I've definitely seen pumps with those long hoses on retractable cables, but I'll aim for driver side pumps unless they're really obvious. Our last rig was 62' total between a 37' trailer and an F350 so I'm used to gassing up being a pain in the rear 😂😂😂

We used the generator when we needed to top off the batteries. There's a solar panel up top but it's only powerful enough to keep the house batteries topped off when bigger things like the fridge aren't on.

Hello from Canada! I was watching for the report on boondocking ... I have a class A 35 ft gas coach, much older and it drives just fine. I never go over 55 km/h and on hills, it depends, but I will trade speed for steady climbing anytime. Driving along, we can talk as we would in a room. It is only loud when it drops out of 4th. I take upwards of 60 seconds to get to speed so even accelerating does not make that much noise. Do you have solar?, run the generator? Batteries? How long before the batteries are flat? How big is the parasitic electric load? Travel safe. Henri
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Henri! There's a small solar panel up top but it's just for keeping things topped off when the rig is sitting. We had the inverter on to keep the fridge cold and run things overnight and we ran the generator on and off throughout the day to keep things topped off. I'm awful about being able to read voltages and draw and know what's left in a battery and all that, but I do know we have enough for the batteries to last at least twelve hours running the residential fridge and some fans.

@thecasualrver
@thecasualrver 4 жыл бұрын
@@Five2Go, On the Ford 6R140 6-speed transmission tow-haul mode, also functions as an engine/transmission brake, Transmission, and engine calibration changes from the fuel to timing to valve body line pressures. If cruising in 5th or 6th gear there is very little to no difference, RPM's, etc. But if an emergency braking situation would occur in tow-haul mode would assist in stopping. I keep my on all the time. Just a disclaimer I am a Ford product development and test engineer.
@drinkinslim

I second this. Some say the tow/haul mode should be on by default (but isn't). It helps for city driving as well because it helps you slow down when approaching stop lights. And yes, definitely helps for holding you back while going down hill.

Such a nice wonderful family Stick with this rig for a few years and then get what you really want as your list of complaints grow Noisy Going down the road clink clink clunk lots of noise everything sounds noisy and lack of power going up the hills and driving around that gas engine it’s terrible I would never get a gas engine in an RV Please forgive me if this sounds too harsh but this is what I really think. I do watch Matt’s channel all the time and I don’t blame him this is probably the best he had in your price range I really don’t know I’m not an RV owner yet still dreaming about it thinking about it so I agree that some of my comments might be inaccurate due to a lack of experience
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
It's not as powerful as a diesel pusher, but it's also half the price and we got around just fine. The Ford V10 is a very popular engine for a reason - it's a work horse and will get you there with no issues. We chose this RV and were never going to get a diesel because of the huge cost difference up front and further down the road with maintenance, and that has nothing to do with Matt. As for the road noise, it's not bad at all. There are some creaks and clanks, but they can all be tightened down and addressed, and that's going to be in any RV except for the most expensive brands (and even then...). We've been in hundreds of RVs and can tell you after just a month with this one, Fleetwood builds a nice rig. There may be some rattles when hitting potholes and other junk in the road, but this thing is built solid and to last.

Too bad you weren't able to wait for the the Godzilla V8. It's a big improvement over the V10; more HP and more torque. Also it's much smoother than the V10 because the V10 is naturally imbalanced. While the V8 has 60° V design which was much easier to tune and significantly quieter. The V10's reputation for reliability is somewhat spotty as well. BTW, I am a loyal Ford guy: First on Race Day!

How is the swaying in the rig and how is the steering? In our 31 foot class c we had to add heavy duty sway bars front and rear and a steering stabilizer than we could drive better and NO swaying.

Hello Brian and Erin. Thank you for sharing your first camping trip in your new rig. Oh....I really do like that rig! This should be a great shake down trip. If I recall the walk through on Matt's channel, your refrigerator is a residential fridge, correct? If so, how is that managed while boondocking? The house batteries will power it through the night and you'll have to run the generator for a certain amount of time first thing in the morning?? Have fun and stay safe!!
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
That's correct - the inverter powers the fridge and almost all of the outlets so I'm able to use my cpap and we ran a fan too. The house batteries had a ton of charge still left in the morning. It was at least 12 hours of batteries-only between running the generator around dinner time and then in the morning to recharge. It's pretty nice!
@campingalan
@campingalan 4 жыл бұрын
Ok....that is awesome to hear! I still don't know where we will end up; class a or class c. But, a lot of the Class A's that I've taken a liking to have those residential fridges. As you are probably familiar with, over here on the western slope we have a ton of boondockable options (mainly for those weekend or week long trips as you are on now; not the trips we'd take off to tour a specific region in the county) as you are in now. So, I've been curious how that would work out. And when you talk with your salesman, Matt, he seems to generally feel that tons of solar additions on a motor home with a generator is not the greatest investment.Have fun!! My son lives over by you guys. Probably in July we'll be meeting somewhere in the middle for some tent camping. It will be somewhere between where you are now and Taylor Park over by Tincup. My schedule is way more flexible than his; so we should keep it closer to him.
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know how people justify those $4,000+ solar setups when a generator is a fraction of that and is literally plug and play. The cost of solar is definitely coming down, but it takes a lot of extra knowledge to install and manage day to day. I think we'll start seeing RVs with powerful built-in solar setups that are easy to manage in a few years, but right now it's very niche and not obtainable or understandable for the average person.
@campingalan
@campingalan 4 жыл бұрын
Yes....I definitely agree with your observation. $4k is a TON of generator gas!! Batteries continue to be one of the Achilles heels of society. Of course, there are folks that do extreme remote boondocking for extended times. So, I'd see solar as a better option then. But, I suspect for 75% or more folks that solar is just a nicety. Personally, I'm good with a small cell keeping the chassis battery topped off. But, that could also be accomplished with a 12v plug in $50 cell and keep it in the window; and for FAR less $$ and roof holes than a roof cell. About how long do you have to run your generator to recharge your batteries the next day?Does a rig like yours come with an auto gen start? Or, do you know if an aftermarket one can be added? (just kind of wondering as we have a dog in the event of a power loss at a campground). I was also wondering that for the fridge, but an inverter would cover that until you got back to the rig that afternoon. Have an awesome time on the remainder of your trip!! Our San Juan Mtn town is swamped. However, it is a bit odd as the restaurants are still take out only. Hotels were just allowed to reopen by the county. So, it probably is awkward, at best, for anyone visiting right now. A great argument to have a camper and just park in the woods with all of your stuff !!
@Five2Go
@Five2Go 4 жыл бұрын
So speaking to not knowing all of the numbers with solar and charging and all of that, I really don't know how long I needed to run the generator after 12 hours on batteries 😂 One of these days I'll read about amp hours and voltage and all that and it'll actually stick... This rig doesn't have an auto gen start, but we've seen others in the same price range that have them. We use a Blink camera system to check on Vector while we're away and those cameras have configurable temperature alerts. If things got turned off and started to warm up, we would just head back home. The units are battery powered and our hot spot will run for a few hours on battery, so a power outage is no concern there. We haven't had to do that in two years of fulltiming though, but it's always a possibility and it's nice to know that he'll be safe.

Did you feel as if you needed to use the brakes allot? Just trying to make a determination on when I'll need to downshift. I don't have tow haul. I'll have to switch overdrive off and go to 2 or 1 depending on how steep the mountain is. You seemed to breeze through with no problems.
