Loyola heart disease patient Stacey Tyranski talks about how she went to the gym for a zumba class one morning and felt off so she went to get some water. In the hallway she collapsed and went into cardiac arrest. Dr. Peter Santucci says that she was resuscitated with an external defibrillator by a paramedic who just happened to be at the gym. Looking back, Stacey still has a hard time thinking about how close she came to dying. Dr. Santucci explains that Stacey has a condition in which she can suddenly have ventricular arrhythmias occurring in the bottom of the heart. The best protection for patients at high risk is to have an internal defibrillator. Previous defibrillators would have leads, or wires, that entered the heart, but there are disadvantages to this approach. Loyola offered Stacey one that has leads that are close to the heart but do not enter it. Stacey feels with this device that she has a safety net because it could happen again. She says as a mom with young children that this device allows her to live a normal life. Dr. Santucci says it's very gratifying to help a young woman like Stacey who now has a full life ahead of her because of this new defibrillator, which wasn't even around a few years ago. Stacey says she is so glad that she turned to Loyola.

I am a 51 year old mum to 5 and wife of 30 years. 03/12/22 I went into sudden cardiac and respiratory arrest after feeling unwell at a music show we were at. Fortunately I was given immediate CPR by the on-site paramedics who we’re walking by at the moment I collapsed. I was also given a shock to revive me. I now have an sICD and recovering well. If this had happened at work or out walking i would certainly have died. I get choked up even thinking about it. I was in the right place at the right time with people that knew exactly what to do. It highlighted the importance of knowing how to give fast cpr and know where the AED s are. I owe my life to these people

I had a sudden cardiac arrest in 2020. I live in rural Texas and had it not happened when my daughter and granddaughter were visiting I would be dead. I was blessed with this device and the piece of mind that comes with it is priceless. I couldn't imagine living without the confidence this gives me.

It's an amazing device! I've had one for about 3 years now after surviving two cardiac arrests. Fortunately, my wife is a nurse and was with me for both events and saved my life! Can't sing this device's praises enough!

I just had mine implanted last Friday. I will admit I went through a lot of soul searching over the years about getting this. I have never had an heart attack or SCA (Thank God!) But my doctor highly suggested it as a measure of protection, I am 62 always athletic all my life, I have CHF life side not pumping as it should. After 3 years of putting it off and speaking with the right people I decided for go forward with it. What really pushed forward was seeing all the young athletes over the past few months go into SCA on the field was a real eye opener.

This is life saving, life giving, life changing for Stacey and her family. What a brave soul to pave the way for others with this device, other patients will benefit from her willingness to participate in this innovative procedure. Her courage is truly an inspiration to everyone who knows her.

My son got one implanted at the age of 10 in 2014. He was the first child in the state of FL. We also allowed the hospital and local news station to pick up story to pave the way. Very uncommon in children, but just know if anyone passes out while doing some physical activity, most of the time it has to do with the heart, please assist and provide CPR.

I have one under my left armpit and let me tell you… it sucks. It is the most uncomfortable thing I’ve ever experienced in this lifetime. I can’t sleep on my left side and if I do, I wake up and I am sore so days. The wire that goes up my chest is so painful. I hate it. And I’m not saying that because I’m a jerk, I appreciate every single day since February 23, 2020 and every single scientist, doctor, nurse or whoever help build these things and install them and all that. Every single day that I wake up I am so grateful because me just writing this is all extra. But at what cost.. it hurts and I am so uncomfortable. And I’m not even 40 yet. But God has a plan. I didn’t die three times in my sleep and live to talk about it for nothing✨

I had one after having a icd unfortunatley it double counted so got a few shocks but the unit just couldn't read my heart correctly Not the technologies fault My hearts fault with many operations endocarditis n all the scare tissue readings were a mess Went back to a ICD Honestly think the shock from the s icd was a little harder than from the icd

I had an S-ICD fitted about 2 weeks ago & one I went to answer my front door when I just collapsed & next minute found myself in a heap on the floor. I went to my local hospital & they checked my S-ICD over & found it to still be working correctly but now I find that every so often I get this pain like a red hot poker for a split second in my back by my left side but it is not near to the scar where my S,-ICD was fitted. What could be the cause .

Hi, Charlie! Thank you so much for checking out our videos. Unfortunately, our doctors aren't allowed to comment on patients' specific cases in social media. But if you're in the Chicago area (or will be sometime in the future), we have great specialists who can assess your case to see what treatment may be helpful to you. You can request an appointment with one of our specialists either online at www.loyolamedicine.org/appointment or by phone at 888-584-7888. Good luck! -Keisha

Never heard of an S-ICD just an ICD. I my self went through cardiomyopathy at 24 than 26 was afib almost 28 in April some time before i had to get an ablation before the Defibrillator ICD device and i can say i really dislike it cus i can touch where its at and feel it where it sits. I got mine on January 12th 2021 luckily i'm still alive from what i went through but really can say i don't trust the device 100% because what i heard from a friend.
