The Super Famicom's Satellaview attachment allowed users to tune in to timed broadcasts and download games via the BS-X cartridge and their 8M memory packs. Today we look at two previously undumped/unpreserved titles: Tamori no Picross & a Satella-Q broadcast. As a bonus we also go through the Machi Magazine / Town Magazine dump. If you need content dumped, please feel free to reach out.

I really enjoy learning about long lost or obscure games. I know it wasn't feasible for Nintendo to do satellite gaming outside of Japan, but they could have (and should have) simply brought many of these games to a cartridge outside of Japan. Alas, we non-Japanese people were deemed unworthy!

The whole point of a reusable memory cartridge was to keep costs low. Releasing all these games on cartridge in the US wouldn't be cost effective and likely lose Nintendo money.

I could've never imagined the 64DD and Zelda beta questing guys (videos of which I occasionally, to this day, go back to) I randomly found 10 years ago on my youtube recommendations, were going to become this big of a face in game preservation and, to an extent, even homebrew communities. And boy, am I glad it's you guys! Be it finding obscure, or flat out things that hold a historical weight in gaming, and even promoting cool mods, or events from the homebrew communities, you never fail to somehow still have the same charm as you did a decade ago. That's honestly what kept me hooked to this channel all these years! Keep up the great work, dudes! And to many more finds, and years to come!!

This made me feel extremely nostalgic of a time I didn't knew. Kinda like 80s urban architecture in movies or city pop, vaporwave and stuff like that, I love watching videos about the satellaview. There's something really magical about getting games and media from radio waves emitted from space in the 90s. I think weirdly my favourite part about it is the loading screen, there's something really cool about seeing the BS5 building in a night shot fully lit up.

I've been fascinated by the Satellaview since the very early 2000's. Grew up on the SNES. Was (and still am) a massive Zelda fan. We got our first computer around then. I get on the Internet as a child and I learn about this whole other world. This mysterious system and these lost games. And Zelda games at that! While I've never been active in the community, I've always appreciated their efforts and unearthing and restoring these treasures. That new stuff continues to be uncovered today is just unreal. Every new discovery makes me feel like a kid again.

It’s unbelievable how cool and experimental Nintendo was in the 90s. Knowing myself, I would’ve been super excited with this when I was younger. I probably would’ve woke up super early and would’ve been waiting for the broadcast. I use to do the same when Captain N: the game master aired, so with this being actual games and content? I would’ve been going nuts 😂. It’d be interesting to know exactly everything that was released for this thing besides just gaming. All the electronic magazines, reviews, upcoming games, etc. I tell my girl how lucky she was to be a kid in Japan around this time and she says “oh I dunno. I feel the same way about you being a kid in America during the 80s and 90s. All the music and movies and cool stuff🤔 ”. An interesting reverse. Keep up the good work fellas. I don’t think Nintendo will be releasing any of this stuff any time soon (if ever with all the news related stuff and electronics mags). Thanks always for the quality content

Since I first stumbled upon a Luigiblood video from 2013 in which he demonstrated his progress with satellawave, I was amazed that this kind of online conectivity thing existed way back in the mid 90's, and ever since wanted to get my hands on a satellaview and bsx cart neither of which I got because they're pretty rare and expensive these days. The service is obviously not functional today, but hey, who cares! That cart would make for such a cool decoration in my living room. Anyway, love your videos, congrats for the discovery!

Hell yeah! Preservation! Finding these games is like meeting a friend, we get so used to them being around to the point it feels impossible to imagine a time where we didn't live without them. They were in the world, living their life, and there were still tons of people who knew about it, but that special bond between me and them hasn't existed yet, only replace that admiring friendship with a beta for Ocarina of Time, or a ROM Dump of a Famicom cartridge, or just even learning what a Famicom is in the first place!! The only difference being that your friend probably has a boring history! Then again it's probably a good thing your friend wasn't locked away without contact for years and years... That'd make a good Satellaview game actually...

I think that the SV was a really cool idea and it's sad it never became a worldwide thing, but to be honest in Poland, where I live it wouldn't be even heard of anyway, since the most we had at the time were bootleg Famicoms (like the Russian Dendy, but with our own branding) and very rare Mega Drives, which probably also could have been counterfeit. Funnily enough my father used to own a SNES kiosk arcade, which I have no idea where he got it from, possibly Germany. As an arcade lender/services/seller he also got a lot of other imported games from other places, like a rare title licensed by Sega, Hopper Robo, which was basically a Donkey Kong clone. I love your videos, like the Pokemon ones and also all of the VHS rip compilations, which help to save some of the memories of the era which has ended. I hope that you'll have more such things to go through and show us.

Fun fact for Tamori no Picross: For those who don't know, Tamori (Real Name: Kazuyoshi Morita) is a very famous Japanese Comedian and Television Personality who is best known for his long-running late-night variety show, Tamori Club, which has been airing on TV Asahi since 1982. Tamori is one of the "big three" television comedians in Japan along with Takeshi Kitano and Sanma Akashiya. His likeness is the basis for the Piranha Plant in All Night Nippon Super Mario Bros on the Famicom Disk System.

Honestly, there's so many useful applications of time travel. Even if you just limit to going into the past, there's all too many more important places to go, but I would just go back to Japan in the 90s and experience the Satelliview while it was in service. Devices like satellaview and the cancelled CD-ROM drive were the reason behind the original sound card developed for the SNES. Playing some of the games like bs-x Zelda was a full orchestral soundtrack 4 amazing things that we never got to experience in the West, much like this cartridge system that allowed you to download and experience exclusive games that you would never see on the Shelf anywhere, ever. It would be amazing to mess with this stuff on actual factual Hardware

I couldn't think of something pithy, so I wrote a short story instead: It's incredible, what survives a reality-bending apocalypse; among the ruins of 22nd Century civilization, a dragon could find much indeed to fill his hoard to the brim with. Here lie a rusted old car, paint chipped, windshield shattered, engine blackened with its own suppressed exhaust. Hardly a wingbeat away stood an effigy of a clown buried up to its waist, its spongy hair faded to the dull red of a long-faded bloodstain, that had once beckoned the desperate and the hungry to dine on processed foodstuffs far removed from the simple beef and wheat they claimed to be. But, these were trifles. Any old fool with the brute strength to haul them (perhaps a heavy-chassis synth or an especially stocky dragon) could bring them home, and the truly dedicated could take the time and effort to restore them to their former glory, if not better. No, should you wish to find the TRUE treasures hidden in the ruins, you must be a detective. Paphvul, through a synthesis of faecraft and earthly sciences, was able to access the 21st century (or at least, an alternate past version of said)’s internet, which he used as both tool and toy; he gladly shared his various misadventures and perspectives on the world with these people of the past, and often used the information gathered from it to research new sites of exploration. On the fabled old site known as KZbin, he’d spied a contest offering to send an especially rare treasure to whoever could write the best comment on a particular video. As he contemplated whipping out one of his favorite dad jokes, it then occurred to him: where were they going to send it? So, when he sent his comment, he had them hold the cart at their current place of residence, should he win, and he would come pick it up. Praying that by some miracle this worked, or that he could at least trace the shipment by some clue left in the ruins, he gathered as much info from the videos and other documents he could find, and began his flight to the former site of the state of Michigan. On a wing and a prayer, he embarked on a quest for BS-X.

The Satellaview has always fascinated me. Wished they would have done it in North America and Europe too. Good old times when I first found some of the roms for download. Some of my friends thought Ancient Stone Tablets was a Rom hack. They had no idea the Satellaview existed.

Very nice video, I like the Satellaview, very cool device, but it's not known by a lot of people out of Japan. I truly appreciate what conservationists do to continue finding forgotten stuff like what you showed in the video.

The Nintendo-Playstation content brought me in but Tony's genuine personality and charisma kept me here. Thanks H4G for staying consistent in your YT career despite all the craziness and nonsense these days.

The Satellaview is one of the most intriguing parts of the SNES/Super Famicom's life cycle, i was quite obsessed by it when i first read about it.

I seriously hope for the day that we can find perhaps a database or the hardware/library of broadcasting. Although we may not be able to launch a satellite or something, I wonder if there's a way we could match up the frequency, and say do some cool stuff with this. I hope every piece of software is actually archived somewhere, somehow. I'm curious what the broadcast hardware was actually like.... thanks for sending me on a curiosity rabbit hole.

There's something nostalgic about the Satellaview music even if I didn't grow up in mid-90s Japan(in fact, I wasn't born in the 90s at all). Maybe it's because I had an SNES as a kid but I feel like there's more than that. Also I like how the Satella-Q uses the SMW soundfont, I hope the soundtrack gets uploaded soon
