as a thank you, here's an NYC subway secret. I am a subway conductor, and today I am assigned to the R Line. The R is 45 stops long, takes about an hour and 40 minutes one way and is completely underground... except for one short bit where the ground drops into a cutting for a freight rail line, and the trains cross a bridge under the road. This bridge has two empty, unused track beds on one side that were intended for a subway line to Staten Island.

Great video Geoff. What grabbed me, as an old ex-signwriter, was the baked enamel sign at Leicester Square station. As an apprentice, some sixty odd years ago, we would silk screen some signage in screen enamel, and bake them in walk in ovens. the finished products looked good, nice and glossy, and lasted forever. A lot of old railway signs are testament to their longevity. Maybe I should have baked myself mate!

Dear Geoff, Usually I do not post comments but I have to say that any new addition to your classic series is always a fabulous idea - not to mension a remake that you annouced above! The "Secrets of...." series needs another chapter in its history. It is a true legacy which has to be continued! This well-made series - and you personally Geoff - have brought so many people together. People with whom you shared your love for London, The Tube System and transport, those who came for some neat urban facts, as well as those who were sensitively mensioned by you at Canary Wharf platform. People simply find relief when watching your productions. In my humble opinion a 10 year anniversary of the "Secrets...." series is a great opportunity to include some "wow" effect in those planned continuation videos. As a fan who remember watching the original series in 2013-2014, I think of an idea, that would be a real treat for your amazing audience. I think it would be nice to include some of the outtakes and never used material from the original series, unobtrusively twisted into the new videos in such a way, that these would become an inseparable part of the new stories and secrets presented - let's say one significant outtake per episode (the one especially important or remembered by you for some reason) and a number of "train-passing/station" 2013 outtakes crossfaded with the current rolling stock/platform montage. This would become some kind of "easter-egg type" thing, what the 2013-2014 series was famous for (similar to the "tube map" - not skipping it of course), a perfect sentimental correlation between the classic and the current day and a discrete, beautiful shout-out for your first, fifelong viewers and followers - believe me Geoff, people would be pleased to see that. As somebody once beautifully said: "We need to find the right ballance between the past and the future".... I think that this trick will open some kind of new chapter for all of us and will connect together two generations of viewers - those who are with you since the Londonist with those who came along later. As always from me, Greetings from Gdańsk, Poland. Have a nice day, Geoff.

20 Cranbourn St has more secrets. It used to be known as Transad House (for LT’s then in-house Commercial Advertising department) but was more famously where all the Underground Line Controllers were based until they were relocated from the 1960s. The last one left was the Central Line Controller who finally moved out about 40 years ago. The 1940s green Control Desk was transferred to the LT Museum. The building was then empty for 18 years until refurbished as the new Line HQ for the Northern Line which was moved from Newman St. Just up the road on Long Acre is another Underground secret but one which you might have to work out for yourself.

I first noticed that "copper-tubing" tube map in the pub at Cannon Street Station a few years back ... a very nice touch indeed and I imagine that most people who see it don't realise what it represents. Incidentally, there are no customer toilet facilities in that pub at Cannon Street and you have to use the ones on the other side of all the platforms. When the pub opened I thought that was a great idea as it meant that the station toilets would have to be free, unlike the ones at nearby Liverpool Street. Of course, a short time later all the station toilets became free, thanks to Chris Grayling who was transport secretary at the time I believe.
