Wow! Now that gets one's attention. Fifteen symphonies. Fifteen quartets - Shostakovich was a busy man. By its nature the string quartet reveals its creator's innermost thoughts, fears, anxieties, hopes more so than the orchestral works. Indeed, a number of his symphonies are pot boilers, written to please the party apparatchiks. Shostakovich lived during the Stalin era, when it was common to keep a packed suitcase under the bed or in the closet, in the event you received the dreaded midnight knock on the door advising you to dress warmly. You are about to take a long train ride to a cold climate. This is indispensable 20th century music. Thanks!

I can't really disagree with what 'johkkarkalis' wrote, but I'm a bit sorry that's so often the first thing highligted about Shostakovich. I mean, he was a composer and pianist with lots of success! It looks like he had a restless and social personality from the beginning - more like Steve Reich, less like Philip Glass, you might say 😊 And he had wives and children and friends like Richter and Rostropovich and Britten, lucky fellow! He wrote wonderful and interesting music! ♥
