Gem have you tried the Seawhite sketchbooks? They are a British brand, they look similar to the Artway (I haven’t tried the Artway) I love the Seawhite. I’ve used everything ( watercolours, watercolour markers, pencils, colour pencils etc,) except alcohol markers on them. There is a slight texture, they have square sketchbooks, which I love, but they have straight corners. You can buy them on their own site or most UK online art stores.

I absolutely love Seawhite and Brighton sketchbooks. I have the 19x19 square. They are £8 and really good quality and value for money.

I did toy with the idea of getting one - they seem to be similar to the Artway ones? I’ve had other Seawhite products, and wasn’t all that fussed on them, but maybe the Sketchbook would be worthwhile as a comparison to the Artway? I think they are a cross between the ilo and artway. Personally I’m not that fussed on Ilo ( good marketing tho). 95 pages of all media paper but of course sketchbook use, not for lots of layering with watercolours and alcohol markers bleed through, Paper is toothy enough for graphite and coloured pencils. I like them.

I haven't heard of either these brands, but I'm in the US. Did you try Gouache on your Seawhite? Seems like people say that gouache doesn't soak into the paper as much as traditional watercolor, and is more of a "surface dweller" on the paper. I don't think I'll ever get Alcohol markers as they have that problem of bleeding through. I just recently was looking for scrapbook paper and discovered that I had a brand new tin of 12 Prismacolor colored pencils. Must have gotten them in the last 6 mos to a year because I forgot i even had them. Also have Crayola colored pencils and the Prismas go on so much smoother, more pigment. Yummy. I tend to forget things, so when I swatched them I put down the name of each color and the number. Tried blending too. Just on a plain Moleskin sketchbook that cant' handle much water at all.

Happy you got to test it. I really enjoy Pentalic and Hahnemuhle watercolor sketchers cause I can watercolor then put Art Spectrum pastel and multimedia primer clear primer over it and colored pencil or pastel. I use Spectrafix fixative and nothing rubs off. But I love to use different media. And they are like little diaries aren't they? The Stillman and Birns books was a waste for me. When in a pinch I have made my own. Despertness right? I have really enjoyed the Derwent tinted graphite with them. If you can get ahold of the above you would love it no bleed through but no llamas though.😁🤗

Oh no Gem! I wanted to make this video! I don't know if I can forgive you ;-p Joking aside, I agree with you, this sketchbook is great for pencil, but I use it only for that. In my opinion it doesn't accept water well: I don't like at all this buckling. Oh, also. Do not, under any circumstances, put drawing gum on it. Never. Just... just believe me ok? ^^

Ah, I love your review! I am using the exact same sketchbook since January. I tried to get an Illo, but that was impossible at that time and this was the only thing remotely fitting my needs in terms of format and paper and I am halfway through already, because it is so much fun to use. Of course the paper buckles a bit more when using too much water (which I do), so I personally kind of miss some rubberband to keep it shut, but apart of that I love it. Glad I'm not alone with that opinion :)

Neat book. I like that you show what the book can/cannot take and discuss the paper. I have about 3 or 4 sketchbooks, one is really inexpensive and really best suited for graphite pencils only. Thank you for this review Gem. Congrats on finishing another sketchbook. Have a nice day :-)

The transition scene got an instant like :) Also, you look very beautiful in todays intro :D I totally get your love for Julia's watercolours. I own quite a few of them, too and my collection keeps on growing when new, beautiful colours come out (though I'm not getting all of them ;-) ) I think I might get an Artway sketchbook in the future, once I need a new one. I think I have it on my amazon wishlist, too. Would like to try a square sketchbook and I like the fact that it takes well to most mediums. Though I mostly sketch in pencil and sometimes use a bit of coloured pencil, if I really like my sketch. But I mostly just transfer it onto another piece of paper to colour it, depending on what I want to use :)

Arteza products are (usually) no problem to get over here, right now a lot of their items are out of stock - assuming due to lockdown measures. I did actually want their square sketchbooks with the blue covers? Is the paper quite textured? I fancy a go with one... maybe next time.

Almost right! Läufer is pronounced „Loy“ like in „lawyer“ + „fer“ as in „Transfer“. Loyfer = Läufer. But this was the best try of German I heard by someone English talking without german backgrounds but with a medium strong accent/dialect.

Congratulations! In over 40+ years of creating Art I have never filled every page in SketchBook. I have sketchbooks for projects that were finished but they had plenty of blank pages left over. I still have 2 books from college that have drawing and painting ideas but I have no urge to “finish” them. I often wonder is this a KZbin thing? Creating a SketchBook video that is full and complete ? I just scribble on any paper that I have at hand. I buy a lot of watercolor papers, sheets are so much cheaper and I cut them down to sizes that I am likely to use. I sketch out my idea or transfer it from a handy piece of paper and create my finished artwork. I encourage you to keep creating in your sketchbook and please share with us what you choose to share. I'm not sure if it's a KZbin thing - it's not for me, anyway. I have no intentions of sharing the entire contents of my sketchbooks, number one because it's not that exciting (lots of half-finished thumbnails and swatches) and two because I feel it's the equivalent to showing your diary to someone? I like everything tidy and all in one place. Lots of loose sheets drive me nuts, even kept in a folder. I'm also a completionist, and the old saying 'nature abhors a vacuum' - I have an innate desire to fill every page.
