Ellie Black (CAN) has debuted a new uneven bars skill at the 2022 Canadian Championships: a Shang with a half turn.
It consists of a clear hip circle to counter pike over the high bar with a half turn (180º) to hang in mixed L-grip.

I hate to criticize because I could never do anything even close to it, but I personally don't love these. Using the crossed arm grab to get the half twist makes them sort of flail around, and almost always feet come apart and toes come unpointed and knees bend. It looks messy to me. If it could be performed as a half twist in the air, I think it would be phenomenal.

the narrator said the exact same thing. None of them actually twisted in the air, they just crossed their grip and then “unraveled”.

Was it Chellsie Memmel at 1:23? Hers seemed fairly controlled, but I absolutely agree that it almost always looks like they're flailing their legs around in the air, especially when they go from straddled skill to straddled skill.

@@catherinewilhelm809 I think its Beth tweddle! There are some gymnasts with beautiful half turn releases, Sanne Wevers form can be a bit choppy but she does quite a clean half twist rather than forcing it. He Kexin has a beautiful one too :)

The FIG meeting has explicitly mentioned that the half-turn MUST be performed by grabbing the bar in COP 2022-2024, otherwise it will be not recognized. Let's see how this rule will be executed and if the judges would turn a blind eye on 'certain' people then......

She finished 4th in the AA @ Worlds in 2019, only about 0.15 out of 3rd. These upgrades would certainly close that gap IF she can perform them well. BTW, there are two definitions of "recognition." Some commenters are concentrating on the wrong one. Consult a dictionary. :)

Yeah I still don’t consider a mixed grip catch equivalent to a half turn
@tomforster9759
@tomforster9759 2 жыл бұрын
The releases with this type of turn were mistakenly labeled "Ricna 1/2" or "Tkachev 1/2", when the correct label should have been Ricna to "cross grip", etc. The reference to the cross grip indicates a turn will take place without implying a complete half rotation is attempting to be accomplished before catching the bar. This type of release has increased risk in two ways: First, if caught too close to the bar the gymnast cannot connect to the next skill and might not have enough swing to perform a kip, hence a very large deduction will result. Second, repeated use of the skill adds more stress on the shoulder of the first hand that catches thus exposing the gymnast to potentially more injury than other releases. Personally, I love this added turn and the potential it creates for more creativity. Two thumbs up!

You took the words right out of my mouth! Luckily doing the same skill twice (like the wolf turn wolf turn) has been downgraded in the CoP for 22-24, and I believe the candle mount has been downgraded as well.(here's hoping!!) It's a step in the right direction, at least.

certain bar combos are also getting old. 2 that I'm so sick of seeing are a piked tkachev + pak + van leuwen (very effective combo tho) and the Chinese healy + ling + piked jaeger. I also think the D+ dismount bonus is not very effective, as most gymnasts already end with a double tuck/pike or 2.5 twist. It would've been better if it was E+

The FIG men’s technical committee killed the Tkachev 1/2 turn skills by making them the same value and same code box as the Tkachev without turn. It will be interesting to see if the Women’s TC does the same after 2024.

Based on how the sport is currently being judged I would absolutely love for Ellie to do this skill and get it named. Is it pretty, and with great technique? No. In the vast majority of the cases with these type of skills, the half turn is not a true half turn, and often times the Yezhova connecting out of them end up looking wonky as well. How many gymnasts do we see do a Yezhova that looks like a weird sideways flop to the low bar?
