Shamanism definitely has a big place in the game, but a proper sailing skill could also do wonders. In my perfect world, we'd get shamanism now, at some point followed by sailing, then taming. It kind of also makes sense narrative-wise. We start exploring the seas, then learn the forgotten art of taming creatures.
@YewJackOSRS
@YewJackOSRS Жыл бұрын
When talking about shamanism, one thing that comes to mind is if you want it tradeable -- maybe have the tradeable version be a temporary augment and then one you make yourself via the skill is permanent or longer lasting. That means if you don't have a high level you can buy it, but if you do have a high level you get a bit of an added benefit.
@HavocParadox
@HavocParadox Жыл бұрын
that's a good idea actually. it benefits the economy.. the low levels that cannot make it and creates incentive to level the skill all in one swoop. I will add that i think that the tradable should be less in terms of items to make.. and for a perm effect to take a lot more.. think of it like the Portals in poh.. you can either teleport once and use the runes.. or spend 100x the runes and have free teleports to that location forever.
@Calzour
@Calzour Жыл бұрын
I was thinking a way to do it would be to have everything you need to make say a totem be untradeable but the totem be tradeable, however you would then need say 60 shamanism to apply the totem to say bandos tassets. That way it avoids all the pay to train aspect but you could make money by doing the annoying grindy bit and selling the totem so other players can get the buff by just buying it but need the skill level to actually apply it
@haydenmaines5905
@haydenmaines5905 Жыл бұрын
Ooh, good idea! Maybe there can be a bit of lore about how if you make it yourself it's attuned to you, thus it's more powerful, but if you get it via trade, it's unattuned, and doesn't get the full effect

I can see Sailing taking the longest time to develop and has the most complex systems with the scaling of the current waters. Taming would be the least drastic of the three but would be cool to see passive abilities like picking up marks of Grace or what I thought of a lizard that gives poison immunity. Shamanism could add to the lore and magic of the world. Knowing there could be limitless possibilities of what this skill entails is exciting.

I think Sailing has so much potential and it's so easy to expand on that. For example content like: Sea battles, sea exploration, sea PVP, even SEA RAID bosses. You could also implement that with other skills: sea slayer, sea fishing, construction, crafting, etc... Would really synergize well with everything else. In my mind I see an event where you have to have a certain Sailing level to be able to sail a BIG ship to deep seas and fight a raid boss on that ship doing mechanics and keeping the ship's health in check. And you can take a lot of inspiration from already existing games or films that has sea content in it.

You can also enhance equipment with Taming. Like with the Ranger outfit, how about if you tame a Fox (like the old Robin Hood animated movie!), every level the fox earns will give you a benefit. Like at max level fox, your Ranger outfit is the equivalent of Armadyl armor if you use the respective arma pieces on it, and while your fox is with you. Or if you have a Bear, maybe you could introduce a new berserker armor that you can only wear with your bear? Or if you have a Black Dragon with you, your black d'hide is better or gives you some effect. IDK. I just want a reason to use non-max equipment! It's also identifiable. If people see you with a max level fox and ranger outfit, they know you basically got armadyl and a companion that does something as well. I wanted Shamanism but you guys sold me. Taming is it!

While taming and shamanism mostly rely on altering or helping other skills, which I fear would create a meta where it's better to train shaman so I can then hold some boosting item in my inv for fishing. 25:07 I think a cool idea would be to have some application of a navy for the major cities, like maybe falador has a navy, or varrock, I think there's potential for quests and minigames involving this idea as well, "sailing" is a big part of military strategy, maybe a quest or skilling minigame where you help the varrock navy to protect the city from the meyerditch navy, or maybe different cities in gielinor have alliances with some cities and are in conflict with others, like you said there's lots of potential when we're talking about an update this big, its bigger than adding a new continent or anything we're essentially unlocking the whole water biome so it would be cool to see it having an extensive reach so that involves every type of character, like you said, not just the typical let's become pirates

This talk did sell me more on Sailing compared to before, as the way of training and the reward space starts reminding me of slayer, in a good way. As slayer basically is being trained by completing tasks, and Slayer could be trained in similar ways. Combine this with the way Slayer is a separate skill from combat, but combat is in general necessary to train Slayer, Sailing could work in the same way. As while the journey is mostly the soul of the skill, it could be trained by a hardened Sailor or an old and rich pirate giving you a task to gather resources, dive to find shipwrecks or defeat x number of enemy ships. Another way it could be compared to slayer is what leveling up the skill means for the content you can access, as Slayer unlocks monsters for the player, sailing could unlock areas, which could hold new creatures or new resources. It really feels like there are endless possibilities for the skill, which makes it feel like something completely different, while still keeping the training method similar to what we know and love. Genuinely a fantastic skill idea

Kind of reminds me a bit of invention from RS3 but like if a creature is food driven combine that with cooking, If You're able to do combat with your creature maybe with smithing you can make armor for them, Hunter maybe you're able to locate specific creatures that would be harder to find or only found using the hunter skill. I find the Taming skill could be super interesting and I see so much protentional in it. Engaging activity and cool cosmetic rewards are the key moving forward with any skill. Keep the people interested and give them fun rewards to work towards, an equipable shark (like the golden tench), cool armor/clothes similar to hunting gear, multiple activities to adequately train the skill rather than having the best xp be capped at level 70 and having to do the same thing to train until 99. There should have been at least 5 skill ideas that have not been previously thought of (completley out of the ordinary) I've got a few ideas about new skills that would be a great fit to the game. A new skill called "Guilding" as an example. (A social skill that involves you and your team to build together, mine, smith, woodcut and fight. The 1st idea: You have to establish 5-10 members into your so called guild. To start out players must complete a ritual to bond themselves to the guild creator which in turn will reward them to level 3, (this will establish that you have joined or are familiar with guilding aspects) Players will have to work together within the guild to craft the materials. Lets say, someone on the anvil, someone pushing the materials from one area to another, someone using a furnace, someone exploring the runescape map for unique items. The idea is endless. Building: The guild skill will involve somewhat a new establishment, where the members work towards building the guild hall, killing bosses and making them into trophies, wall mounts ect. (construction level could be useful here) Exp: The guild leader may set certain task into a menu/tomb where the other members can complete for exp. It could have its very own storage area where the members can contribute to the guild hall for exp as well, or a passive exp ratio when mining guild only ore on the map. (refined silver ore) Reward: The skill can allow players to create there own furnaces, anvils (within the guild hall) buildings/tools could have a tier 1,2,3,4 that require a certain level to make. (You could add more options/items with the crafting skill with this) Enviroment: The world could have added trees, ores and boss items that are non tradeable on the g.e (this would force members to have to obtain the items) These so called items are bound to your guild only. I feel like options have not been explored into a huge category and ideas are not that creative (as new content) example.. summoning is pretty much the taming skill just changed a bit.

Sailing should implement zones. Something like the Grand Line from the anime One Piece. Only high level sailing with a good hired crew can get you to end game zones. Maybe with the endgame zone being a new city, Atlantis. Make rare crew members, ship upgrades, ship accessories, ship paint jobs, loot chests, possible rewards for defeating enemy pirate groups. Have boss pirate groups that can be soloed with your crew like Blackbeard. Explorable caves and islands for slayer tasks or hidden agility courses. On top of the deep sea fishing and stuff that you can always do. Obviously this is a lot but there are so many ideas for this skill.

Would love to see fun cosmetics for companions as well! Like if you tame a bear you could unlock or invest (gold sink?) to have a badass looking bear with arrows stuck in it, or maybe be able to change a brown bear to a polar bear

IDEAS: Make there be a section of the sea thats considered in the wildy. This would be a high risk zone with pirates, pvp content (cannons and boarding ships), lochness monster boss (group bossing??)..... so many options but thats just an idea. "DEPTHS OF THE WILDY" or "WILDY CURRENTS". Thoughts????
@sempybandz
@sempybandz Жыл бұрын
other ideas: sailing minigame, deep sea scuba diving (treasure hunting/trails is incorporated)... like the ideas are limitless for this skill taming: could have (similar to birdhouses) different homes and areas you can build for creatures, depending on the area.....pokemon has been mentioned... what about pvp companion instances or battles - could you tie it to the pvp arena to make it more active? Hogwarts Legacy had a cool beasts system with areas to "tame", vivariums to give them a home, etc shamanism: this lowkey fits the game maybe the best of the 3 in a way?? The lore aspect is great.

I think there can be an item sink for shamanism and still keep it where items that's give XP directly are not traceable. For example, you would need an item to access the spirit realm to gather the untradeable resources. Everyone would want that item to access the spirit realm, but you can't just stand at GE and use it for XP. You gotta go out and work for it still

After watching this Q&A I did a complete 180. I liked Taming the most, then Shamanism, and I was against the idea of Sailing. Sailing is now my favourite pitch and Taming my least favourite

kinda same here, shamanism looks easier to implement and pretty cool as well, especially the spirit realm thing. if they can properly pull-off sailing to make it fun, there is heaps of potential there and is less likely to break the game as well then shamanism/taming.

We need more like Pokémon and more a bond to your pet tho where you can show him off with gear that is achievement locked or skill locked with that pet and that adds a whole nother ge bank standing content and a way to show your stuff off the list goes on catching rare pets shiny pets trains specific skills with your pets combat lv for pets I mean the list goes on imagine it having a agility lv where if you train agility it gets xp too scalable oc

Really hope taming makes it through. Feel like a lot of people are comparing it to summoning despite it having almost nothing to do with how bad summoning was in RS3. If anything, Shamanism is most like the old summoning with how it is trained, gathered, and pretty much every worst part about old summoning just with different resource outputs. Sailing in premise seems cool, but feels like it would work better if it was more of a mix between a minigame and what Zeah is rather than a skill, kind of like how we have dungeons but no dungeoneering, could have sailing based content but no sailing skill.

I play a lot of different games and I have to say that the level of communication, acceptance of feedback, and overall willingness to listen to players is so different with OSRS. For example; another game I play has a lead developer that outright puts all criticism into the same box as "Haters" and has a very "I know better than you" attitude. Popularly requested features are either ignored or monetized. Not to mention any criticisms about balance are outright disregarded despite players leaving due to their mishandling of said balance. The grass is really greener on this side of the fence.

100% voting sailing if it's not instanced. Imagine just sailing up on a dude chilling in the middle of the ocean and he's deep sea fishing. Plus you can go diving and island hopping. Get sailing xp from anything you do so it's like training a whip on controlled and you don't have to do any one training method.

If you guys add sailing and make it so you can marry the captain from the desert mining camp or the old pirate who lollygags at Port Sarim and take them to a honeymoon trip around the seven OSRS seas with your seaworthy vessel I'll damn sure make time for the game again after 6 years. :D Sea Dogs 2 (Pirates of the Caribbean 2003 game) is still the best sailing game ever released with or without mods so I would imagine you could study its gameplay loops for reference.

I was not into Sailing at first but this video has opened my mind to potentially accepting it. Honestly, I like most of Summoning, even the training of it. I don't think the charm gathering and imbuing should be gone. I think Taming completely missed the mark. Taking care of a pet would feel too much like a chore. Even having to feed a kitten and play with it every 20-30 mins was annoying and they say they want to make it even more interactive than that. I was most excited for a "companion" type skill but Taming seems to be the worst one of them all so far. I made a small post on reddit a while ago explaining how they could rework summoning and I believe its far better than the current Taming pitch.

From commentary I've seen from fellow players, we're all interested in the content but not necessarily as a new skill. I like the idea of Taming as a skill but people argue hard that it should be part of hunter to obtain the animals and part of farming to care for and raise them. Sailing seems like something that would make a really good minigame to unlock new islands to visit rather than being a good skill. If anything maybe use construction and crafting skills to build and maintain the ship. I personally don't like some aspects of shamanism but that's the one some people are viewing as being a decent skill if not something that could be distilled into stuff that has some herblore/magic basis. I was around for the introduction of Summoning to the original game but didn't stay around long enough to truly dig into it. It appeals to me conceptually and so does Taming. Taming sounds to me like "animal companions done right this time," which is something I personally want this game to explore moreso than anything else. I hope that one way or another we can explore that idea in osrs. Whether it's with the taming skill or adapting the concept into other skills. Thanks for reading.

Skill Pitch-Specialist. adding a new skill would function likena job systemnsimilar to popular rpg games like final fantasy. How it could work For example sailing would be a specialist fisherman unlocking the job Sailing. Shamanism the job of a herblore and magic. And taming the job of a farmer.

About the world map: I think maybe it would be best to keep oceanic and land as separate maps so that the world map isn’t completely littered with icons. Then include in the display options to have them overlay if the player chooses. About other games that might draw inspiration: has anyone at the team ever played ‘sid meiers pirates!’ ? It is also an old game like osrs, and I feel there is some aspects in that game that could give some inspiration to osrs sailing. if nobody on the sailing team has played it yet, it is worth looking in to. The game puts you in a ship and out to sea within the first minute of gameplay.

I've always liked the idea of sailing, but there's no reason in should be as skill. It's a minigame. Taming could go one of two ways, either it's a skill unto itself like hunter and doesn't add anything to the game as a whole, or it completely changes the meta and becomes pretty much required as a competitive benefit. I'm on the fence about shamanism, again it would add to the meta and become a requirement for competitive gameplay, but as long as it doesn't train like divination, I think it's the most likely skill that players would embrace.

I Really am interested in the enhancements rewards side of Shamanism.. So.. maybe it becomes worthwhile to smash a torva plate, crystal armor, dragon equipment or Barrows items into dust, so that you can make something with the skill that is tradeable. Breaking down the item literally gives you the essence of the item, in stackable form. You can use this essence toi make oils,saps,salves,tinctures (call it an additive) to add to various equipment, potions, or food! Maybe buying a basic form is tradeable but once used on the item/food/pot it becomes an untradeable item locked to your character. But if you want the maxed boost, longest lasting effect, or greatest increase in DPS then youll have to gain the level to create that on your own. Imagine a prayer pot that could give you an additional +10 def levels, or increased hp regen, of course even a basic Percent boost to the points restored. Perhaps Armor or equipment boosts could be in like.. oil form "You oil your Crystal axe with Ancient oil, awarding you 1% exp gained in prayer exp." and get a buff for maybe 4 hours. Imagine an additive applied to armor that increases its Prayer points. "Holy oil" Your proselyte slayer gains just grew. Can make better boosts, but theyre untradeable but still degradeable. I think tying this all into the spiritual realm could be amazing. Maybe in order to apply an additive to an item you need to visit the realm, or perform a ritual. Then simple upkeep could be with the base item. Call the items "Sanctified/UnSanctified.." to denote their charged status. Ability to face different bosses, explore different parts of the world in a way we havent seen would be amazing. 10/10 would love to explore the skill already

After watching this roundtable, I think I've been sold on taming. The excitement and keenness that the mods seem to have for this skill is promising. I fear shamanism has too much potential to break the game/meta. Sailing seems to have the most diverse content potential, but I don't think it'll be fun after like an hour, and it sounds too much like slayer contracts to me - "hey go to this island and collect 10 bananas for me". I'd much rather raise a bear and have it follow me around.
@SupachargedGaming
@SupachargedGaming Жыл бұрын
Sailing has so much choice for content... because none of it's tied to the skill. Travel to an island and fight a boss? That's bossing, not sailing. Do a treasure hunt / clue scroll thing? That's a cluescroll/treasure hunt thing... not sailing. Find new fishing spots? That's fishing, not sailing. The actual "content" of sailing is... building ships, okay, fair enough. Another construction-esque gold sink? Travelling, which wouldn't give xp apparently...

i think the most obviously thing to make taming new stuff compelling is to make "shinies" or rare cosmetic variants of a pet. it's the MOST popular thing for adults that play pokemon, even more so than competitive battling.

Shamanism has by far become the one I'm most excited for. It already feels the most fleshed out, and also the most flexible as well as for where it could go. Feels like Shamanism is a bit of a mixture of divination, archeology and invention from rs3. All of which didn't feel like fully fleshed out skills on there own in RS3, but all work really well together. One thing I want to say is that they said that the est xp in invention is the item sink, but that's actually the slowest xp for invention.
