Hi David, just wanted to say that you offer the best product reviews on KZbin. You've got great production value and you don't get side tracked by superfluous thoughts that run through your head. I like that your product reviews are actually field test of the items your reviewing. I find these types of reviews the most helpful. Please keep up the GREAT work. And thanks.

Glad you addressed the compass problem in your review. I find it amusing that promos for the Origin made such a big deal about it being completely de-magnetized, yet the makers failed to provide decent protection for the compass! Really enjoy your reviews, keep 'em up!

Another professional video review from David at UST. Fair, of course. I would also ad a produce bag for a slim option to hold water for your nicely added stuff.

It also has a good sized signaling mirror. Wasn't sure if you mentioned that. I have this kit and keep it in my car as redundancy survival items. It was given to me as a gift. The little knife is much better than I expected. It could skin small game with ease. In a true emergency where you had no other choices. This kit is actually not bad at all. I could survive on it long enough to get rescued I believe.

I am a survival expert been doing it now for 10 years and I bought one of these sol kits for shits and giggles and I must say in a survival situation if this is all I had it would be a luxury. It has all the basic needs but no matter the tools it all comes down to 2 things. The will to survive and the knowledge of your environment.

Dude, The flashlight is meant for seeing what you're cutting in the dark. And as far as water proof; it's not meant for holding under the water with a brick. It's meant for if you drop it in the water or if it's raining. It's not a perfect kit but I think you're pushing it a little past it's intended use. Of course these are just my opinions on this vid. I do appreciate your reviews, carry on.

@IchigoKurosaki011

@@jacenharding2674 He's testing it in situations it would never be in. If it was submerged because it was in a zipped pocket or backpack that had sunk. It would be even more protected from the water. This thing floats, he's forcefully submerging it and that would never happen. Absolutely awful testing.

I purchased this item a few months ago.The box and how its made is very very good, and it is very convenient. However, There are a few items which does not last long. The first item is the button compass. The needle somehow lost its free movement and is very hard to point North, something which you do not want to happen in an emergency. The sparker is not waterproof, even though the box is seemingly so. The torchlite is very very small. The whistle is not convincingly loud,. The knife is good, the signal mirror and other contents are good. In the end, I disassembled the box, and salvage the items. I threw away the compass and the sparker.

Hi Mike... it's one of the better "cheap" ones for sure... It has all the basics unlike some others... It is a bit bulky though for EDC in your pocket... but would be great in pack. Maybe one of these days I'll do a video or series on building various EDC kits from scratch. For now... this kit or the Bear Grylls Basic kit for a cheap EDC... should be okay... Hope this helps. ~David

Indeed... but it is very tight as the internal ferro rod seem spring loaded and prevents an easy roll... at least on mine....definitely does not roll as easily as a quality butane lighter wheel... plus it was like 18 degrees out and my hands were freezing... :) Sometimes you do what you have to do to make it work... Thanks for the comment. ~David

I think you are right... also others have had the same problem... I do think the "needle" deal is just a hair to close to the inner part of the outer case also... as it does seem to make contact when it is tiled just a few degree. Helpful comment. Thanks. ~David

Really great video! You do a really good job with these reviews! I'm one of those people that really didn't like this kit and returned it right after reviewing it. Mind you, I paid almost $50 for it. I was extremely disappointed with the knife, the compass and with how much the case itself weighed especially seeing that it wasn't waterproof after all. With the Bear Grylls kits I can at least take pieces out of them to add to my own kits. Keep up the great work! - Christine

I recently purchased this kit. Your video has been very helpful, and your compass theory is correct. It's glass shattered eventually, but other than that it is wonderful (in my opinion). No disrespect but I think that by 'waterproof' it means the tools inside should be fine if it rains, snows, hails, etc. Not necessarily meaning 'Will be completely fine if you pin it underwater with a brick' waterproof. Thanks for reviewing it and making this vid though. Great advice as well for if I buy a new kit anytime soon.

I would probably keep it in a ziplock bag, to keep it dry and protect the compass. It could use some improvements but all in all its a good start. Throw it in your pockets, purse, desk, or glove box, and you have a good start.

Hi Tom Smith, Absolutely agree with you of course! I have heard it said "If those do not know what to put together for an emergency med ket simply don't know . . .' Well if they do not know and can't think any sensible thoughts of how to do this then maybe they are the ones I would not go wandering with you know? A kit is always a compromise, with that kit it was too heavy, not too big, but bulky, with stuff in it I know I would never be in a position to use like the square wire for instance.

Thanks for great review. I won this kit in an Outdoor Store Giveaway... I've added a few things to it and keep it with an SOL Bivy in the truck of the car... I've tested the kit in a similar fashion and gotten the same results. In an emergency, the cordage, fish hooks and mirror could make a difference. I've made an EDC using the Maxpedition Mini pouch which I carry darn near everywhere. Could be part of larger kit to add a few backups. 2=1, 1=NONE.... Be Safe out there!

David, again awesome review, I think you were a little generous with the 1/2 star, I'm thinking 3 stars. You've added a lot more Items to the kit as I would, especially the first aid items. I would think it would be a much better kit if it had at least a couple of band-aids.I don;t know if I am a hard core prepper or survivalist but I am getting more knowledge and this kit lacks a lot as you stated. Blessing to you and as always looking forward to see more of your reviews. Your friend Ty.

If you put this kit inside a ziplock bag you could also put a Silva Compass in with it. That way, it would be more water proofed plus you would have a plastic bag to get water from foliage and have a reliable compass.

I have slept in the woods with only a knife and a rag that I used to crush coals to filter water into my bottle. I used the plank with dry tinder to get a fire going. And I slept surrounded by blackberry bushes because animals hate the thorns. It's not the most comfortable living but my best advice is to hone your own natural skills. Skills used by the natives since the dawn of time.

I have tried to use my SOL sparker and can seem to only light actual quick tinder or cotton balls I couldn't get it to light Toilet paper on it's own so would be wise to have water proof matches and fire steel or what ever it's called. I have the SOL emergency blanket and bivy and even used it one night at home just to see if it would be warm and not tear and if I could refold it and get back into the pouch it comes with. I was able to get the bivy and the blanket into one pouch so I can use the emergency blanket as a shelter and the bivy to sleep in or just use them both along with 2 of the normal emergency blankets that are in my kit I am sure I can make a nice warm shelter and fire I have 2 water proof pouches my bag is about a foot long has molly straps, many pockets and compression straps, it's not a large bag by any means but I have been able to make myself a decent kit, that I call my get home kit. My wife is ill and if something happens while out biking or fishing, I will have my kit that contains quite a lot of stuff. in a small bag I should make a list to of it one day to share and see if I should add anything maybe later on..

Thanks Ty... My wife calls me a happy baby since I was born with a smile and generally look at the bright side of things... so yes, You are probably right... I am likely a 1/2 star too generous on my ratings... Take care bro! ~David
