Glad I got mine before they switched to disc. My experience of the kind of cheap cable-actuated disc brakes they include on bikes like this is that they add a lot of weight for limited additional stopping power, rub and need adjusting after nearly every ride, and generally are not an "upgrade" at all. The Allez had such a light frame for an entry-level bike, and that was one of its selling points. My 2021 model, which I added some fairly cheap Campy alloy wheels and a carbon seatpost to, weighs 8.8kg - 10.3kg seems like so much that even these upgrades would leave you at about 9.5

I caught that Doug DeMuro "THIS" at the beginning lol. New Allez looks pretty good for a standard entry-level disc road bike, on par with the Cdale Optimo and the Trek Domane AL. I'm a big fan of the official clearance being 35c; it gives you more tire options and let's you do more with the bike (maybe even throw some thicc 650b action on there).

I did a double take when I saw the pedals with clips - haven't seen a new bike outfitted with those in decades. The complete bike weighs about the same as my first nice road bike, a 1989 Raleigh Team 753, which came with Reynolds 753 steel frame, DuraAce groupset, and Mavic clipless pedals. It ran about $2000 in 1990 dollars. That bicycle still rode very well after 25 years, when I gave it to my grandson for his birthday, as he liked the idea of a retro bike. He and the Raleigh were the same age. For $1200, this Specialized bike looks like a good deal.

I’m so glad I grabbed an allez before they fell to the garbage disc brake trend. And no, I don’t mean that disc brakes are garbage. I mean low end disc brakes like on entry level bikes like this are garbage. Not much than rim brakes with decent pads in my experience. Also, I checked the geo chart and they slacked it out even more, made it more “relaxed”. My allez is comfortable enough to ride rough roads and dirt trails while still being playful and fun.

I had to crank up the volume on that buzz test, rock on, silence, right on! Specialized got it right on so many levels with this bike and thanks, GC, for showing it to us. And while I'm no fan of discs in the pro road environment, hate to see all the pile-ups with no time to react to someone else's binders, it looks like discs are ready for their close-up on affordable consumer models such as this. And that price is a steely deal and I like the increased tire clearance because I like making a bike all sorts of things, like when I was a kid on my Sting-Ray. One day it'd be Evel's Harley, the next I'd be wheeling down Baja like Parnelli in his Bronco. And now we need to see someone win a gravel class on that bike, stick on big rubber and burn, baby, burn like a disco inferno. O man, there I go again, reliving my glory days in the Seventies. 😀

I like it! I have a 2006 Allez (with a modern build) and had a 2019 Allez with R7000. The 2019 was AWFUL because of a head tube the size of the Empire State Building making it handle like a hog. This 2023 still has a tall head tube relative to a Tarmac or Aethos, but it's 20mm shorter than the 2019's. I like the idea of getting one of these, changing the groupset, and putting some decent wheels on it with 35c Gravelking SS tires. That'll get you over just about any sort of terrain you could throw at it. Continue by swapping out the heavy seatpost, saddle, and bars for something lighter, and you probably have an 18lb do it all bike. Money well spent? Probably not. But a fun bike? I'd think so!

Canyon is offering their direct to consumer Aluminum Tiagra for $1500. Trek and Giants offerings don’t have full carbon forks. I think $1800 is perfectly reasonable these days. 10 years ago this bike would have been $1400, sure. But this bike is more capable than that one, with a groupset that has benefited every way from trickledown tech from higher end groupsets. I WAS going to buy a Tiagra Tarmac for $2.1-2.5k but tbh I might just buy one of these since i already have a carbon gravel bike and TBH i can’t tell the difference sometimes.

In my opinion mechanical disc brakes are the shittest type of brake that you can have. It combines the worst of rim brake and disc brake and puts it into one. I don't understand why bike companies have started fitting them to bicycles, I think rim brakes are better than mechanical disc brakes. The only reason why they are fitted is because now the bike can get sold as a 'disc brake' bike. If you want to get disc brakes it is 100% worth it to spend the extra money and go for hydraulic disc brakes.

For the money, its the best roadbike Specialized makes. I have pretty much the identical frame albeit previous rim brake model that will fit a max tire size of 28mm. For those that wonder, this bike with the same groupset and wheels is as fast as the 2012 Roubaix SL3 that Cancellara won the Paris Roubaix on back in 2011 as a prototype and why I bought the frameset back then for just under $2K and having owned several roadbikes of all materials including latest Cervelos etc, the SL3 Roubaix which is rim brakes and without boat anchor future shock is still my favorite bike and of course it could take Cancellara's big power over the most grueling cobble conditions. A kicker is, I mounted a 2000w Bafang BBSHD mid drive motor to my Specialized Allez Elite...essentially the bike shown with rim brakes and I can drop 'anybody' on that bike including nationally ranked riders...I come from a competitive cycling background...and in fact rode it today. I could easily in fact tune it for 3-4000 watts but 2000w and my power it will hit 40 mph all out which is fast enough. This frame can take big motor power and rides like a Cadillac and tracks dead straight at speed. Its a magic carpet ride with big, quiet motor with 52v battery. So a ringing endorsement from me...benefit of the disc brakes is you can fit even wider tires which is a plus if you ride rough roads. I basically stripped the frame which is gold and built the bike with the parts and wheels I prefer. Cheers GC. PS. I am not happy with the direction of the bike industry but this bike is a breath of fresh air and rides as good as a carbon frame...amazing ride quality and not a hint of harshness like the Emonda ALR which rides harsher. For those 1500w Crit racers, this bike is not to be confused with the Allez Sprint which is stiffer, more slammed with more upright seatpost angle to be ridden more 10/10's on the rivet. The Elite is an endurance geometry bike compared to the Allez Sprint designed for crit racing.

@@GCPerformance18 Fair enough, I wasn’t looking at the Allez lineup but I paid 600 for my brand new Giant Contend with Claris in 2017. 1000 for Clairs sounds bonkers but I’m looking at the current model year for my bike and it’s up to 900. Prices are just going up and up.

Its useless to upgrade this. You will never be able to get this to 8kg or under without spending a fortune, maybe 2x the value of this bike. Besides, 8speed? In 2023? Come on !! And disk brakes on an aluminium bike? Wow more dead weight. People may say what they want but weight does make a difference. No thanks. Give me a second hand rim brake allez 2010-2020 any day of the week.
