Thanks for the tour Kevin! Looking at the Whippet for my next hat. Like the extra binding along the edge of the brim. It also reminds me of the style my grandfather wore, circa 40's-50's. He always bought a Stetson from the same hat store in downtown Baltimore. I am sure they are long gone these days. They always packed a miniature plastic top hat in the box and that was my prize! On our next trip to NYC, probably in November will probably stop by your shop and have a look at the colors the Whippet comes in. Thanks gain for another great video!

Great story, we have a few antique Stetson mini hats in our showcase ,they were given w gift certificates,in mini Stetson boxes.. I'll show u when u visit. Great story.. Btw The whippet in grey was the very first hat I got when I took this job in 1994, we have similar taste😎

Hey Kevin-I discovered your channel last night and have been binging ever since. I've learned more from you than I have in my 62 years wearing hats. I have probably 20 hats (not counting caps) about half and half winter and summer. I just got what I think is a stratoliner from my dad. He had it for 40 years or so and I don't think he ever wore it. It's beaver and beautiful. I have to decide whether to takes it somewhere to be steamed into a shape or leave it unshaped. I kind of like being able to wear different shapes each time. Thanks so much for all the information.

I collect vintage Stetson hats from before 1960 (some from Young's). What I have observed in my old hats is that Stetson was able to make thinner felt as the beaver content increased. That made those hats lighter, more malleable, and better looking. While Stetson's lowest level hats called "No. 1 Quality" were 100% rabbit (no beaver) and employed the thickest and stiffest felt. So it surprises me that today's Stetson 100% beaver hats would be thick because that would make the hat more expensive than necessary.

Goorin brothers just came out with a version of the stratoliner with a nylon band no lining and something like $250 it’s all wool no fur. These Stetsons seem like a deal compared.

Kevin...I'm looking for a fur felt homburg that is somewhat soft with an open crown that can be shaped into a center dent or one that is already shaped that way, and with a two inch curved brim or a bit less and not so curved. Any suggestions, since you have a number of homburgs for sale. Nick

No, we don’t stock an open crown homburg, it’s not something anyone ever requests. that would be a special order, we’d have to order a dozen or two,have them made up.. it’s just not a popular request, we stock three different homburgs, Magil,Stetson and a cheaper, wool one by Capas headwear. All three come in 2-3 colors.thats already 7 different choices in homburgs we always stock, it’s a lot, I doubt they’ll expand the homburg line much further.. I’m sorry, all we could do is make you a custom hat from the ground up,it would be expensive, like around $750 but u could call all the specs, (colors,the ribbon color and width, felt type,how soft or stiff) wish I had more choices for u. We could steam the crown of a homburg open for u,but it wouldn’t be all buttery soft, the felt on a homburg is more generally starchy and stiff than other hats

Oh that camel colored on hanging really high? On top? That is a custom job, made by Van, our Hatmaker, he has a workshop in the back and makes customers, it has a huge brim, huge crown and a pencil curl, heavyweight western felt..it’s a lot bigger than it seems there.. it’s a one of a kind, no model name.. those hand made customs run about $550 and up, but when u get to that level, u can just tell him whatever u want..design every aspect of it, buying an already made custom is sometimes maybe $50-100 cheaper than designing it yourself,but the main thing is there’s no waiting , a custom hat take a while..

GTV REVIEWS the Stetsonian is a very special, unique hat that very few people ordered,we are one of the few to actually order that hat, I think it was a special offering a couple of years ago, Stetson originally released it in one color, and not open crown, we ordered special custom versions of it with an open crown,and in three colors.. we placed maybe two orders in total, and that was it. we decided that was enough. As far as Stetson offering that hat as a standard production model? I highly doubt it, our shop has more connoisseurs,more people wanting open crown dress hats,and special features like high crowns, etc.. most shops don’t order these unique styles, they can’t move them..they’d collect dust and never sell. I think that hat is pretty much a rarity, we have some left, I highly doubt we will order it again, that’s high,high,nostalgic crown,and am oversized brim... so if u like it, I’d pull the trigger on anything we have in your size, that’s the end of those

Hey kevin @1:50 is that the asher in 100% beaver? So theres 2 versions of that hat or is it called something else?

It's actually not really exactly like an asger, it's similar. That's the BENCHMARK I was referring to. It has a few differences.. raw edge, (not bounded like the Asher) Slightly bigger brim than the Asher (1/4" bigger)and the benchmark's felt finish appears slightly more velvetty than the Asher, it's like a tiny bit longer brim,and simpler,no binding on the brim. (When it was new, I referred to it as a "Beaver Asher" because it had no name at that point)
