Found this generator on Facebook Marketplace. It was advertised as a brand new generator with zero hours hours on the engine. According to the seller "The engine runs but the generator does not produce any power". It looks to be in great condition. How bad can it be? Lets find out what's wrong and hopefully fix it.
I use Harbor Freight Super Heavy Duty Degreaser in my ultrasonic cleaner.

I had exactly the same scenario purchasing a Predator 8750 that was only a year old, but I got lucky! Seller wanted 200, offered 100 and he took it. It was a quality control issue as well where the brushes were not aligned with the slip rings. I placed a small washer between the brushes and where they seat against the frame and that brought them back into perfect alignment. That was 4 years ago and it has been flawless ever since! I really appreciate your channel, I have learned a lot! Thank you!!

This is why I built my own power generator. I bought a 6.5Hp Briggs engine, 2 - 100 amp 12v one wire alternators, 2- 100AH 12V deep cycle batteries and boxes, and a 2000watt Pure sine inverter. Mounted all on to a movers dolly, with breakers, fuse and disconnects.... $650 total. Later If needed, every single piece is replaceable locally today. I just wanted a "semi" movable, clean and dependable alternate power system. And I really couldn't afford one any other way...This turned out far better then i expected...

We have used the kzbin.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

I have the Elite Series model 7000 which supposedly has 8750 watts. I've only used it for about an hour in the last seven years, I purchased it as a just in case for my mother's oxygen generator, she passed away in 2016. It's a loud generator but seems to be pretty reliable, it starts right up...I keep it clean and maintained.

Great job on the project, when the video started I was wondering why it wasn't warrantied then later on in the video when you said that someone had been in the unit before I started wondering if it was a case of merchant refunding the money for the unit (or replacing the unit) and left it up to customer disposal of the old unit (Amazon does this sometimes) and the owner was trying to make an extra buck off the bad unit. Keep up the great work.

Nicely done. Also glad to see Briggs finally put a low oil shutoff on those things. Maybe in 20 years we don’t see quite so many blown up engines. Also, whoever picked red for the neutral leg should be… I don’t know. Electrocuted? When it was being shut down each time, it sounded like something might have been rubbing. Kind of a buzzing like the rotor is touching a wire.

Awesome job James! Good restraint not buying this generator at the original sell point. 20hrs is nothing, and thats a great deal on a Ryobi power head, it looks better built with resin and the string ties. Double check the brush head alignment to make sure the brush heads are directly over the slip rings. With a non OEM part number if one of the brush heads is ever so slightly off the slip ring it could cause issues later. Other than that amazing job restoring this machine back to working order!
@sebastiannielsen
@sebastiannielsen Жыл бұрын
Note however he used the brush that shipped with the rotor, so technically he used "OEM parts". (Ergo, the brush that was right for that stator and rotor). So no alignment should be neccessary. Note however that the incompatible parts here is the AVR, which was "stolen" from the broken power head, and the motor whose governor isn't compatible with this power head. Thats why the AVR had to be adjusted so it fits in-between the motor and power head. Basically, motor RPM directly affects line frequency, so first you adjust the motor RPM until line fequency is good. BUT motor RPM will also affect voltage, and different power heads produces different "base voltages" to so say, why the AVR had to be adjusted to be compatible with the "new" power head that isn't for that motor. Basically, everything except the motor, the AVR, the panel, frame, and fuel tank, was replaced. The rotor, stator, brushes, and terminal block was replaced.
@worthcounty4317
@worthcounty4317 Жыл бұрын
@@sebastiannielsen The misalignment in the brushes would come from the end frame (original equipment) and the rotor (non oem). Adjusting the AVR is required due to a different size power head. The speed of the engine only affects the cycles (hz) in this setup. In a brushless then it's another story.
@Bassguitarist1985
@Bassguitarist1985 Жыл бұрын
@@worthcounty4317 exactly! Many times it's not just the end bell frame that can cause misalignment it can also be affected by poor manufacturing quality where the slippering assembly is pressed too far inward or not pressed far enough causing an alignment issue. James ran into this I believe earlier this year on another generator. Either way James is a smart guy he will definitely check on these things and may not show it on camera because it is difficult to film every little detail. Cheers!

I never miss one of your videos, because I learn something each video. You drive me to drink by saying " we need to "ohm out" this circuit, or the term "ohmage" . I am laughing James, not at you , but at the terms. Many mechanics that have sites on here do the same thing. They are brilliant mechanics & are doubtless using terms they learned at school. Awesome job James!! You know, the lying "has no hours" is exactly why I am sceptical about buying things that don't run or work, and why I don't give people their asking price. It's my money that is buying it, and my time and money to invest into making it work. Instead of stating no hours, just be truthful as much as you can about what happened. Like "it was running, then it made some noises, and then it quit making power". Simple, eliminates the "Yeah Right!!" feeling, and depending on the condition I might give you your asking price.

Another great video! I watch every Thursday and have learned so much from you! One thing I will never quite understand is how these old school non-inverter generators still command so much money (new or used). Adjusting engine speed and AVRs to try to get the expected output while powering your stuff with a less than perfect sine wave doesn't strike me as the best approach to providing backup power in today's world. Inverter generators are the best solution IMO. They are typically quieter, more efficient and provide a much more stable/clean output waveform and really aren't much more expensive these days depending on the brand. I have the Honda EU7000is converted for tri-fuel and wouldn't consider any other model, despite the high price. I look at it as insurance. Hope to see you working on more inverter generators in the future.

Others have already mentioned "the sniff test" to find burnt electronics, but an additional trick is to sniff through a drinking straw to pinpoint the source. This technique is not to be used in the presence of any whitish powders please 😉

Not throwing shade your way but isn't the shaft of the stator treaded for a slide hammer to remove it easily? I been a mechanic on everything I think 6 years on small engines and 15 years on locomotives and somewhere around 55 on everything in between and I have to say you are on of the most thorough mechanic/electricians that I have ever watched work. Pretty nice to see that... Thanks for the ride along and being able to vicariously be in the shop again sir.

It is threaded. Usually I push it off with hydraulic pressure or a rod, but this one was stubborn. And since it was already trash did not care to much about doing it the right way. A slide hammer should also work.

Always find quality parts for any kind of machinery or it will break before its time. Older generators that were made with much more quality clearly show that. I feel bad for the guy who spent the money on this generator and had the powerhead fail after 20 hrs. of use on a new machine. Only generator I would get brand new even though they are expensive would be a Honda hands down.

Always a good video, The Chinese lady that does rewinding, slowly dismantles the winding, measures the conductors and lists the windings and there respective poles as she cuts and peels the coils out.. She doesn't show it often, but some videos do have the prep work included in brief form.KZbinr: Linguoer-mechanic "How To Manual Winding Electric Coil For A 20KW Generator From A Cattle Farmer | Perfect Restoration"

Have you ever considered take a bad stator or rotor to a shop that can rewire them? I had a marine 12volt started rebuilt much cheaper than buying a new one.
@jcondon1

I looked into it a few times. The base cost starts at about $900. Not worth it when you can buy a new Ryobi one for a fraction of the price.

I'm thinking that all the windings are made with ECCA wire (Enameled Copper Clad Aluminum Wire) If is an ECCA wire you can't scratch it to remove the isolation. If you do that you will remove the copper layer too. I never use this particular wire, but maybe you can test with a piece of wire form other device. Try to remove the isolation varnish with a lighter and only then try to solder. Use a solder iron that you can control the temperature. If the solder tip goes black quickly it means that is too hot and it will burns the tin. Using a diode in serial at the solder iron mains AC will do this trick. You can try to removing all layers and leave only the aluminum. Try crimping it with other piece of copper wire using the crimp part of a terminal to crimp both wires. You can see this joint types in an iron or in any heater element. Nice Channel! Best Regards

I've watched a couple dozen of your videos James. Many of my friends are technicians or engineers, Your techniques seem more engineer than technician (my hunch). That said, your briefly mentioned in one of your videos "expertly cataloging" disassembled parts. Something I always consider critically important. Perhaps you could show your method of doing that sometime.

James take those bolts you use for the shafts and drill a hole thru all of then who corrospondens with a greasenipple and you can use a greasegun who works with 300-400 bar do the job easy pisy :-)

body shops use a slide-hammer puller to pull out dents in sheet metal;it has a screw that screws into a hole drilled in the metal,then the sliding weight banging against the end-stop pulls out the dent; I wonder if one could be modified with a bolt instead of the screw and used to pull off your stators? it would give a linear,on-axis pull on the stator,no hammering on the stator. it appears you do this often enough it might be worth the cost of the tool.
