I’ve had this pot stove combo for six months and I’m very happy with it, stove lights first click ever time. I think the aluminum Alzheimer concern is with bare aluminum not anodized because the anodization process forms a hard crust on the surface which is food safe. Happy New Years and cheers!
@chrishamilton25272 күн бұрын
You’re correct. The issues come with anodising getting scratched or wearing away.
@kevinroche33342 күн бұрын
Aluminium pots are pretty much totally safe now. They are produced using a different manufacturing method now than in the 40s-60s, when the health issues arose (which was mainly from dissolved aluminium in water in Japan). The anodising simply prolongs pot life and provides a certain degree on non-stick. Stop worrying - the EU would certainly have banned their use if they were considered unsafe!

I’ve been using my Trangia for a bit, but am moving back to a canister stove with my Olicamp XTS pot (with the heat exchanger system on the base.) The boil time difference is pretty significant (2:45 vs 10:15.) I appreciate your videos - they’re pretty straightforward, and I always get the sense that they’re for everyday folks going out camping.

I've paired it with a soto windmaster, worked brilliantly and I can get everything in the pot: Gas, microfibres cloth, lighter, folding spoon, soto windmaster and triangular pot support, scotchbrite thingy and a jet boil canister stabiliser. When set up it is very stable.

blow torch guy here, the hottest part of the flame is just above the crown of the gas. (blue spikey bits coming out of the gas nozzle) Oxy / Acetylene torches are the same although a lot hotter. Looks like a really good pot to me! I'll definately be having a look for one. Cheers!

The hottest point of a gas flame is the tip of the lightest coloured triangle 👍 this stove they are low so it will be better closer. I learnt that in my apprenticeship when we were acetylene cutting 😂

Looks a bit like my Primus one that I brought about 12 years or so ago. Still use it and it’s never failed me. The heat exchanger on the bottom of a pot does make for a quick boil (but that’s compared to what I was using before).

My preferred current setup is a Kelly Kettle Trekker with a pot stand and hobo stove attachment partly because at heart I'm probably a bit of a prepper and like the idea of being able to boil water even when gas canisters are unavailable, also because I find the process of lighting a fire using bits of stuff round lying around really satisfying. I usually also carry an MSR Pocket Rocket 2 and a small gas canister and a Sea to Summit X32 combo as a backup for areas where lighting a fire would be frowned upon or just inconvenient.
@PhilWaud2 күн бұрын
I use one of those on an alcohol burner. They definitely boil water quicker than a pot without the heat fins, but it's diabolical in any kind of wind. Stick a windshield around it makes a massive difference, reckon you'd have a boil in less than three minutes.

I treated myself to that setup (minus the fancy stand) a few months ago and it's brilliant. Tested it against my Brukit and it boils 300 ml quicker and using slightly less gas.....and weighs less. What’s not to like 👍 The bacon comment made me giggle btw 😆 Happy New Year to you and Jo.

Happy New Year Paul and Jo 👍🏻 Great to see the first vid of the year from you and looking forward to more of the same in 2025. I think your plan to not have a plan, only a flexible idea of what you want to do is excellent. Plans make for burdens. Just do what you want to do as it comes along and you’ll have plenty to look back on come next Christmas. I like the one shot style with minimal editing - the pram made me laugh out loud 😁. Keeping it real! Like seeing you do stoves and camping equipment, you’re very good at it! Keep it loose Paul, and don’t let any negative comments get to you this year - you only get them because folk get jealous 👍🏻🤗

I just used the G2 version of this stove with my soto Windmaster. Here in northern Utah, it's kinda cold, 22 degrees or I think -22C and a approximately 5 to 8 mph breeze. Melted snow to get 650 ml of boiling water for some coffee and oatmeal. Kept the isobutane canister warm with those little chemical handwarmer packets and this combo is the best Kit I've used in my 31 years as a Search and Rescue Ranger. Truly all kinds of weather and attitudes. The only difference between the G3 and G2 is the new G2 is a little larger. On behalf of all of Us Rangers here in the States, Happiest of new years to you both. And keep hiking safe...

I picked one up to use with a Soto windmaster with a three arm pot stand. I am not sure the boil time advantage of using slots or not with that stove, but the main reason I like it is that the pot is secured when it sits on the slots. For a company that made knock off jetboil type systems, Fire Maple have come up with a elegant and simple idea to improve things.

I just got the G2 pot which is 750ml and better for doing food in .Any 3 legged stove will fit as long as the legs fold straight out 120 degs. each and not fold round to 120 degs. Green Peak 2 ( not 1 cos it has rivets on the fold out legs and they don't fit in) fits , as does the Soto Wm with 3 leg fitting , MSR Pock. Rock 2 , and any stove of that 3 leg design fits . For the money its about one of tge best out there withoit spending 3 figures . Great little setup.

I think the big thing there, is not performance, but the wind can't blow the heat away. nut the more important part of a design where 3 legs fit into 3 slots. (apart from 4 legs always have one shorter than the rest, which creates instability) is the fact it locks itself in position and cannot possibly slide off, spilling boiling hot water all over you or anything else! hence why some "click lock". but those ones have a separate problem... (the separate attachment to be able to put a regular pan on it!)
@MrHumlebaek2 күн бұрын
Been looking at that pot for some time now. But as you say, do I really need another one...😊 2min or 10 min in boiltime doesn't matter much when I'm enjoying the outdoors. The design of the pot is designed to maximise heat conductivity. The metal fins provide the heat flux [the form and function of a material to transfer heat]. When the stove is in the grooves of the pot the flames [heat source] heat the fins that are attached to the pot, providing the most efficient heat flux.

As you like alcohol stoves, I have the tomshoo titanium alcohol stove together with this pot. It has fold out feet and pot stands, also comes with a snuff out lid. The stove nestles nicely into the three grooves of the pot As the stove is titanium it cools down fast so you can poor any leftover fuel back into the container.

The Petrel G3 is the same height and diameter as the large aluminium pot in the Soto Thermostack, and can be used in its place inside the cosy and the smaller Soto pots still fit inside. I’ve called it my Frankenstack after one of your recent videos.

You can’t go wrong with titanium or stainless steel. It’s bare aluminium or coated that’s a bit questionable. Boiling water though doesn’t really wear out any coatings so it’s probably Ok. Cooking requiring harder wear and washing I would stick to titanium or stainless steel.

As an owner of a JetBoil Sol, how is it any better? When I got that JetBoil never came close at the time. That Ti canister stabiliser may help with warming up the canister as they cool down and so slowed down, as metal transmit heat better than the plastic we usually use.
