That's a clever design - using two square waves of different frequency (10:1 ratio) to produce beat frequencies. A bit like the "breathing LED" trick. The use of AC and back to back LEDs is neat. Thanks for sharing

I don't understand how the voltage is being inverted by the slower 555 to make colors change.

I think you're driving those LEDs (and, indeed, the output transistors of the chip) a bit hard. Could do with a current limiting resistor on of the out pins.

The 555 offers some interesting waveforms on the other pins. Its R-C voltage (on the timing cap) oscillates between 1/3 and 2/3 Vcc, and is a very nearly linear ramp up and down waveform. Then that ramp can be tapped and compared to an adjustable voltage (5k pot between two 4.7k resistors), and it's thus very easy to make a 0-100% duty cycle square-wave waveform.
@rich1051414
@rich1051414 2 жыл бұрын
I learned long ago that it is actually kind of hard to make a 0-100% duty cycle circuit without having oscillation instability near 0 or 100%. I ended up just settling on Off/On/15%-85% on one project a while back. I didn't know about this trick.

On the potentiometer you place 2 diodes such as 1N4148 one each on the outer terminals one faces in the other out. This separates the charge and discharge cycles and you can adjust from there.

@@rich1051414 Interesting. Circa 1980 I built a circuit as I described above to test an automotive Dwell meter. I had no issues with smooth control from firmly 0% to firmly 100% (the 5k pot span with 4.7k top and bottom exceeds one-third to two-thirds range). Perhaps there was some complication that you ran into. Cheers.

I used a 555 for a motor speed controller back in the day. It was for a RC model boat. The owner had tried using a variable resistance motor speed controller and with the currents involved the thing kept on overheating. I just used the pot as described above to vary the duty cycle of a squarewave at about 1000 Hz and then fed that into a pair of mosfets to control the motor. I put the mosfets on a heatsink, just to be safe, but because they were either on or off there was very little power dissipation and they didn't even get warm. As a fringe benefit the battery lasted much longer as well, since it was supplying so much less average current.

A conical tip on the iron would be a better choice for close connection soldering than the tip you are using. Also, clean tips work more efficiently than dirty ones and produce neater results. But all in all, not a bad project for a rainy day. If the LED's were changed to white and blue, it would look like a miniature of the LED strobe bars that the local PD use on their cars where I live! Might be fun making an enclosure and mounting on one of my grandson's RC cars.
@hotgluegunguy
@hotgluegunguy 2 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree on the tip. Used conical tips for many years, as that was all that was available for the soldering station I had. When I finally upgraded to a new soldering station a couple of years ago, I completely abandoned conical tips. I exclusively use bevel (as in the video) or chisel tips of varying sizes, depending on the job. Superior heat transfer and contact area with the things being soldered. Additionally, the solder stays where you want it to.

That's a variation on the Christmas Tree Star that was in an Electronics Magazine in the 80s, that I built. Basically, it had 5 LES (small screw) bulbs, wired in a H format between +12V and 0V and the crossbar of the H had the 5th bulb, which was connected between the 2 555 outputs. Net effect - run the 555s at 2 slightly different low frequencies and blinky lights. The simple effects are sometimes the best 😃

ICs 555 are producing oscilating (alternate) pulses. At beguining of vídeo you may see Red Leds (+) terminais are conected to Green Leds (-) terminals, and vice-versa. So, depending on signal produced by 555, only Red leds OR Green leds will go On, alternate.
