I think it’s a bad idea because there’s a much cheaper way to solve this, and it improves service elsewhere as well. I do know that Queens, The Bronx, and Brooklyn are growing rapidly, but 99% of the time, I assure you that is in LIC, Fordham, and Downtown Brooklyn. LIC and Downtown Brooklyn are already connected by the IND Crosstown Line, and Fordham could benefit from improved Metro North Service at 15 trains per hour peak-direction, and 15 trains per hour reverse-peak direction. In fact, we should build an entirely new station at Fordham with dual-island platforms to allow both Harlem and New Haven trains to stop there. The Crosstown Line could see a new transfer being made to the Broadway Brooklyn Line by demolishing Hewes and Lorimer, and replacing them with a Union Avenue Stop.

It doesn't matter if most of the development is in LIC, eastern Queens NEEDS rail service - it's a transit desert currently. And that can't be solved with the buses...

@@MysticTransit I would prefer adding express tracks to the Canarsie Line, and splitting it off to serve the New York Connecting Railroad and LIE out to Springfield Blvd, with the area on the NY Connecting Railroad being what the Interboro Express would serve north of East NY. Adding those extra express tracks would be easy, since in Brooklyn, we have the abandoned LIRR Evergreen Branch, and in Manhattan, the line could possibly take 13th Street to 8th Avenue.

If y'all haven't looked at the London Overground - it was a transformational project in London in the 2010s very similar in concept to this, using underused/disused rail freight lines for high quality transit. It allows orbital travel around London, in a similar style to this project. The Overground caused massive development around its stations. The ridership has been phenomenal, and allows for so much better travel around the city. It's gonna be amazing - push forward for it!

The London Overground might possibly face further expansion such as a new route along the currently freight only Dudding Hill Line from Cricklewood to about Brentford and Hounslow, something like that. That’s without including potential takeovers of existing commuter services from other London terminals such as Waterloo, Victoria, Charing Cross and Cannon Street just like it was done at Liverpool Street in 2015 Barking Riverside extension is being built for the new development, with a possible add on option for Thamesmead too. That would be good as that town has no rail links whatsoever, just a load of bus routes like the 472. And it gives options to link up with Crossrail at Abbey Wood

Development is needed right now, especially post-COVID when we basically need to tear down anything that couldn’t be effectively cleaned, and build a new building. I think this line is a fantastic idea to further connect NYC and get people where they need to go outside of Manhattan. Great to start with further connecting Brooklyn and Queens but it would be fantastic to connect it to the Bronx as well. I'm so glad the US is finally getting orbital transit into it's cities. I've lived on 2 London Overground lines in my life- the Gospel Oak-Barking Line (known affectionately as the GOBLIN by locals), and now the North London Line. It's a real life saver, I can go from my flat in Kentish Town to the new East End commercial areas in Stratford for just £1 each way as I don't have to go through Zone 1 in central. Though in my case I do wish it were a little faster, the 20mph sections around Camden and Stratford aren't particularly nice, but that's what you get with infrastructure designed in the day when trains could barely reach 50mph at the best of times.

Excellent idea. And any one that says otherwise is short sighted. The failure of many transit systems is they are linear. From suburb to city centre. And it makes the many more trips that people make across the city more difficult. This solves it in one simple solution. A middle ring link line and long term could be more beneficial than any proposed new suburb-city subway. More people need to move across suburbs than go suburbs - city centre. You generally just don’t see it as they are all trying to do it via slow buses or cars.

Actually this line runs "parallel" with the L line. Same way it does with the N via Sea Beach Line but up to a certain point (just like with the L line). In general though, I feel like this would most definitely benefit a lot of New Yorker's. Also in my opinion it should be a regular subway line, so this way it would be a better fit when connecting with the other subway's. If they did make it a subway line, then have the T line for that branch and then bring back the V line once phase 4 of the Second Ave line is completed. So rather then the T, just have the V line running from Hannover Sq. to 125th in Harlem. As far as having a light rail service goes, it wouldn't be as bad neither because there is a plan about having one going from Downtown Brooklyn to LIC Queen's. Either way it sound's like a very interesting project and I'm glad to see that it's being taking off of the ground this time. With this project, if it is going to be a commuter rail then just bring back the Bay Ridge line or make it a Metro North branch or something. Lastly, as far as pushing it to Staten Island goes, the R train was once planned on extending out there because there is part of an existing tunnel that was build from Bay Ridge but stopped at a certain point. "Not sure if they are any talk's on ever finishing it" but it would be a good idea though.

Anyone who doesn't think this is a good idea isn't seeing the big picture. This will connect several transit deserts and connect multiple lines. It will be a vital resource for people along it as well as those looking to connect to other lines without going to Manhattan. There's a few ways they could do it, personally I think it should be a new division like London's Overground, using a different type of equipment than the MTA currently uses. PATH trains for example are rapid transit, but they're rail road trains not lesser regulated subway stock, but operate like them over federally regulated rail track. Who knows though, High frequency Light Rail might be sufficient for this line as well, and would probably be the cheapest route short of a bus rapid transit corridor. The challenge will also be the challenges by nimbys along the corridor. I'd expect to see some from Maspeth and Middle village nimbys along that route. I used to commute from Flushing to Brooklyn often and it sucked. Something like this would have been huge. Flushing to Canarsie is a heck of a trip currently, it'd be much easier trip with this route. Great video as allways, your were 100% on point.

Yup I was thinking this too. Light metro is around the same price as light rail but significantly better. I think building a modern line like that would ignite public will to go forth and modernize the rest of the subway network to those standards because New Yorkers would finally understand what a world class rail passenger experience is. Right now the city is being held back because of the bureaucracy and transit unions screaming and crying at the first mention of automation. It really all kind of sucks, and NYC having an automated modern system with platform screen doors would serve the city so much better.

Reusing existing rights of way is a smart way to fill in gaps and improve connectivity, and this does both. If you think no one is making these trips now, it’s because people are having to use cars or (multiple) buses to do it. The trips this line will carry are already happening on other modes and they will be way easier once it opens.

It's gonna be really hard man. The Hell Gate Bridge only has 3 tracks right now. One of them is used by Conrail for freight, and the other 2 are used by Amtrak for intercity/long distance trains. The bridge is already at capacity, and that is not counting Penn Station Access from the New Haven Line. You would have to rebuild the bridge to have more tracks. 3:49 If I remember correctly, some portions of the right of way of the A train in Queens used to be used by the LIRR. So it's definitely not impossible to convert a freight rail line into a subway/rapid transit line. 16:33 If they're proposing a station on Randall's island, then I suspect maybe they're going to make this line follow roughly the right of way for Amtrak. I do think this line is a great idea though, as most major rapid transit networks around the world usually feature one if not several loop or partial loop lines that allows people to get around between multiple outlaying areas of a city and near suburbs without having to travel into the city center. The city is already enough of a choke point as is. Hypothetically, if we can extend the northern end of this line into the Bronx, I suspect it would be even better. Also I suspect this line would work out better if it aligned in a east-west direction in the Bronx should it be built up there, because this would allow it to better interchange with the preexisting lines.

Yeah it doesn't connect to any major destinations but you can CREATE the destinations... with the RX, the area around Broadway Junction and along Roosevelt Ave between 62nd and 74th would be the PERFECT places to change zoning to allow new office towers, they both have LIRR stations, tons of subway connections, and with the RX would be within a 2 seat ride of all of Brooklyn and Queens... and SO MANY people in the outer Boroughs would have way shorter commutes from not having to take the 20/30/40 minute subway ride all the way into Manhattan.

One of the biggest challenges would be constructing platforms for the line where it passes Broadway Junction in tunnel. (The line is single track through the tunnel, but google streetview from Liberty Ave shows what may be other tunnel mouths beside the one with the track.) It doesn't look like it would be too deep at that point, probably crossing just below the underground platforms of the A and C lines. The best option would probably be to excavate a big pit around the tunnel and construct the station in it. There s (as you hint at) a lot of underutilised land there. Basically the whole area west of the J/Z and L elevated platforms between Eastern Pkwy and Fulton St as far as Sackman St could be used to build a new station, with better connections between the underground and elevated platforms. And the land could be used for a big transit-oriented development.

I think a line that's already connected into Manhattan should be extended up there, since that's where a lot of the tourists, and regular people will be going after reaching NYC. Rather than having passengers pack this new line right at the beginning, only to crowd another at Jackson Heights, the N/W could be extended, and would provide a one seat ride into the city.

I note your reference to the London Overground. One of the problems it faces is sharing its lines with freight trains. The North London Line section and the Gospel Oak - Barking branch, which are two track railways, simply do not have enough paths for the number of passenger trains needed, which results in overcrowding, or for the number of freight trains that want to use these lines. The Gospel Oak - Barking line runs only every 15 minutes and for much of the day is overcrowded because no more passenger trains can be run. Delays are also caused by flat junctions used for getting onto and off of it as the relatively slow freight services only use parts of the line. Realistically if there is to be an Interborough Express then it will need to be four tracked to separate passenger and freight trains with grade separated junctions to avoid conflicts and capacity constraints and this will cost a lot of money!

This plan represents what the NYC MTA is supposed to look like in the 21st Century! In the future, it should expand into S.I., connect with PATH & look to service other mass transit "deserts" along the Queens/L.I. border like some sort of 7 train extension into Bayside or A train extension into Springfield Gardens. I don't understand how anyone can oppose those when there's an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of NYC ASAP (the toll for cars south of 96St come to mind)! Also of note re: having to travel through Manhattan when commuting between Brooklyn & Queens: Sometimes those train lines aren't available on the weekend due to repairs/upgrades. In those instances, it takes just as long to use 2 to 3 buses to get to where you're going than it does when using Manhattan-bound trains...unless you have at least $50 to Uber/Lyft you to your destination! This plan is needed because the cost of maintaining a car + home will always be high; great video!!!

This is the old but still in use NY Connecting Railroad that connects the Hell Gate Bridge to Penn Station and Fresh Ponds Jct. From Fresh Ponds to the 65th St Brooklyn terminal it is on LIRR trackage. The LIRR used to run passenger service on it from Queens to Brighton Beach and Coney Island so it looks like it getting a chance at passenger service. In order to make it more of a high speed service, it would have to be a commuter rail operation running off 750 VDC otherwise you'd be crawling along the route at 40 mph in a subway car.

It's a wonderful idea, but a lot of work and money. The tracks south of Metropolitan ave. are the tracks to the NYA's Fresh Pond yard, which is a busy freight yard. The L pops out from underground right next to and parallel to the south end of the yard. Further south, there is a tunnel that emerges in Bushwick. I could be wrong but it doesn't look very wide. I don't know how they get around that. From Bushwick to Bay Ridge, the line goes over several single-track trestles over busy streets, and then through another NYA yard. There's a lot of infrastructure and right-of-way issues to get around, not to mention a conversion to electricity and widening of the right of way. If they go with light rail, then station expense would be mitigated, but it's still a very expensive project. I do love it, though.

The good thing about the freight line is that it only handles two trains a day, one in each direction on the single track. North of Fresh Pond yard, it gets a little more dicey. The track is used by CSX to deliver and pick up from a yard in the Bronx. The Amtrak Acela then joins the party north of Queens blvd, I think.

I lived in Bay Ridge right by those freight rails for 24 years. It would be subway rolling stock, not commuter rolling stock that would be a waste. My father was a former MTA employee and his father before him and from the time I was a kid to the present I have followed the rolling stock technology and rail lines. Trust me, would not use commuter rail cars they would be a waste. They would most likely use displaced sets of cars with the R211 stock being delivered since this rail service would only make transfer stops to major lines. The option I like though is light rail a simple, quick in-out service. The video was great though, I enjoyed it and I subscribed too.
