Open gangways have another major feature - safety. You can easily see right through the train (or the 5-car block at least) so that discourages antisocial behaviour, and if someone is doing the wrong thing people can easily move to the next carriage. This point alone should be more than enough reason for New York to have open gangways on all future trains.

I think the R262’s will take up most of the 3 and 4’s fleet, while the 2 and 5 get to keep their R142’s. The 1 and 6 will both get the R142’s AND R142A’s displaced from the 4, while also getting a small number of R262’s. The 1 and 6 do not run along the same trackage. CBTC can stop after a certain point, the whole line doesn't need to have it. Just look at the Queens Boulevard Line with CBTC, and a connecting trunk, the 6 Avenue doesn't. There are only two ways to get between the two lines directly, Crosstown via 42 St, and via the unused South Ferry Loop. According to the MTA, the Lexington Avenue Line will be getting CBTC first.

There is no connection between Lex and 8th Ave along 42nd St. That was severed when they removed the center tracks. Open-gangways I think are a must. This is coming from a Torontonian. Trust when is say travelling on the Rockets is a much more pleasant experience than on the older T1’s. It’s literally night and day and something is think most new North American subway rolling stock has missed out on. I that all the R211’s should feature these open-gangways and not just the R211T’s, but I’m still happy that you guys down south will be getting some. 20 is better than none. The new MARTA QC400’s are also amazing for this reason imo

Same here for a Montrealer regarding the AZUR trains. Don't get me wrong, I have a deep fondness for the old MR-63's and MR-73's, with their natural "DA DA DAAAAAH! power up tones as they pull out of the station. They are the classic Montreal Metro car that everyone grew up with. But the Azur's are just so much more airy and ergonomic (with those wide doors so you don''t have to squeeze in and out).

Notice that there's a mishmash of old and new announcements. I think part of it is that they want to recycle old announcements as much as possible, which wouldn't surprise me if it were a cost-saving measure so they don't pay as much for people to record announcements and then edit them so they sound good through the speakers. I assume they get paid anyway 😳. Another reason I've heard is, long story short, some people speak faster than others. MTA's been trying to reduce dwell times for a while. I haven't ridden the numbered lines lately but I first noticed this on the R179s which all use the same "next stop" voice, even on the J. Before the pandemic I also noticed they removed "This is a Woodlawn-bound 4 train" when you're at Mosholu Parkway, so you only hear the next and last stop.

A little message to the people that are saying that the 1 3 and 6 trains will receive the R262s solely cause their currently using R62s and R62As. That’s not always an accurate way of predicting train fleet assignments as just because the newest subway car fleet is replacing the oldest train cars fleet does not immediately guarantee that the routes using that particular train car fleet is gonna get the newer cars the same thing goes for the N/Q/W which the R211. When the R142s and R160s first arrived many fleet assignments changes occurred during their deliveries so the R211 and R262 will likely result in the same thing. In the case of the R143s and R188s their didn’t had much of an impact as they were only assigned to the 7 and L trains respectively. The R179s were there to replace the little amount of R32s and R42s that were on the A/C and J/Z trains respectively so again nothing major. But changes will be coming soon to the fleet

But one aspect were the newer cars here are clearly better than the older models is noise. The new ones are way less noisy, both inside and outside. Hello there I came up with two scenarios of the order happening I say split it into two order to better manage resources R262As R262Bs the 42nd Street shuttle will definitely get them Option 1 The 4 and 6 train would receive the R262s and be fully R262Bs and the 2 and 5 trains would mostly get the R262As but still keep some R142s. The 6 train will definitely get these cars in this scenario. The MTA would want the newest train fleet operating on the Lexington Avenue line for the CBTC project it’s very likely that the entire R142/A fleet from the 4 train and at least 50%-60% of the R142 fleet from the 2/5 trains will be reassigned to the 1 and 3 trains. The R142s and R142As on the 4 train would be sent to the 3 train The R142s on the 2/5 train would be sent to the 1 train. 4/6 are fully R262s. The 2/5 are mostly R262s but some R142s would remain there to save money. I mean the R262s are replacing the R62/As right. But again the newest doesn’t always necessarily directly replace the oldest train fleet. And the 2/5 is the most heavily used train route in the Bronx so again needs the extra capacity that larger doors and open gangway offers. Option 2 The ridership level case so in this case I believe makes more sense is that the IRT express routes get the R262s they are very heavily used and crowded and are in dire need of extra capacity so the MTA would definitely want to have the newest and hopefully most reliable subway car fleet operating there. The 2/3/4/5 would get the R262s all of the displaced R142s and R142As would be reassigned to the IRT mainline Locals the 1 and 6 trains. The R142s and R142As on the 4 train would be sent to the 6 train The R142s on the 2/5 train would be sent to the 1 train. Again the 2/5 keep some R142s but the would be dominanted by R262s. As a bonus the R142As finally get to return to the very subway route they first began operating passenger service on. In either case the 7 train is extremely unlikely to receive the R262a as the R188s are in amazing shape.

Great insight & much appreciated!!! As a lifelong New Yorker, I've been fascinated with how the MTA will expand & improve since I was a boy who wanted to be tall enough to see through the window of the front car of IRT trains to see them roll into stations. It's beautiful & exciting to see the recently proposed new cars & lines (b/w Qns & BK + the 2nd Ave Extension) bring those visions to life!!!

With the R62s and R62As retired by the R262s, all number lines will be officially NTT. Now my prediction is that MTA will stick to its new car-most used line policy, and put the R262s on the 2, 4, and 5 lines, sending their R142s to the 1, 3, 6, and 42 St Shuttle lines, and I also believe the 3 will get R142As, since that’s what happened with the R62s when the Redbirds were retired by the R142s. It’s fair, actually, since the 3 is the last express route left.

If the pandemic not happened, we would have known by now. Since the MTA was hoping to award the R262's in January of 2021. For car assignments, the 42nd Street Shuttle will get five 6-car trans. These cars are earmarked for the (4)(5)(6) lines. With the (6) receiving cars from Option Order I. If the Base Order cars go to the (5), the (5) would then transfer its R142's to the (3). If the Base Order Cars go to the (4), it would then transfer its R142/A's to the (3). Seeing as the overall goal of the Base Order is to retire the R62 fleet. R262's aren't going to the (1) or (3) They're going exclusively on the Lexington Avenue line because they're getting CBTC first. While the (1) and (3) gets displaced NTT's from the (4) and (5). Lexington Avenue is getting CBTC followed by 7th Avenue. So while R262's are on Lexington, the R142 and R142A's will be out getting retrofitted with CBTC technology by then the MTA is gonna place them on the (1) and (3) lines and the (6) has to get R262's in order for CBTC so priority is definitely 4, 5 and 6 and of course anything the (5) gets the (2) shares as well For some people that doesn't understand. The R142's and R142A's that are on the (4) and (5) are compatible with CBTC but they have to be retrofitted. The R142 and R142A's didn't come with the technology they're 20 years old. While those are taken away to be fitted, the R262's will replace them (and are CBTC equipped with the technology off the bat). By the time R142 and R142A's are back, the MTA would've started working on CBTC for 7th Avenue. The important thing is here is that the R262's definitely have to be on Lexington. And the 42nd Street Shuttle is getting R262's as well. Remember, in the MTA the oldest trains don't always get replaced directly with newer trains. There's a lot more to it Lexington Avenue is the Busiest line in the A Divison. That's why the MTA is trying to get the second phase of SAS to 125th street to ease congestion over to Lexington Avenue. The MTA wants All R262's on Lexington Avenue (4), (5) and (6) lines for Lexington Avenue CBTC the (1) and (3) lines will get displaced R142/A's from the (4) and (5) lines The Flushing line doesn't need R262's since the R188's are CBTC compatible with their addition of 'C' cars to make 11 car R188's Because of this there is no need to swap out the R188's for compatibility purposes because the CBTC Equipped cars are currently working with the technology The Flushing Line uses a different CBTC system compared to what's planned to be installed on the Lexington Avenue and Broadway-7th Avenue Line. As such, the R262's will be equipped with CBTC system for the Lexington Avenue and Broadway-7th Avenue Lines, so it doesn't appear that the R262's, which aren't even configured for 11-car train ops, won't be going to the (7) line.

We're getting just 24 R262s for the shuttle. Four 6-car trains. That's also how many R62As they have on hand for the shuttle today. So it's exactly enough. And also why I strongly doubt they'll be seen on the 7. A large reason is that they'll have to wind through the subway system with a connection to the lettered lines so they can reach Queensboro Plaza. They'll also have to take 5-car sets to make the 11-car trains. And to cover for the removed sets, they might also have to send R188s the same way. I'm not familiar with they train type numbers but have to say for a long time the the 2,5 6 lines had the last train type in your video. It seems that they went backwards with the type of car. What I'd love to see in having the same type of car built for the whole system if that's even possible. I think that there needs to be one type of car that can easily be modified from open gangway to closed at the train yards. I completely agree that they could add so much more info to the led screens. Now as far as color of led screens that should be able to be customized at command and control centers or a universal type of update once the train enters maintenance. Even better yet create a system to where its easily updated by wifi. It is time the Mta stops passing train types off to other lines like they are step children.

You probably won't see this, but now that the R211 have been tested with public rides, I already have numerous complaints about them. The windows are just too small, and it feels as if seating space was distributed horribly. I'm not sure if I actually like having the station screens placed right above the door, as it makes it harder for people to see it while sitting or in the middle of the car. (though it does make it easier for someone entering the train to see it). Personally I believe that the R188 are still the best designed train used by the MTA by an astronomical shot. They are a perfect balance of seating distribution, standing space, window size, door size and info panel placements. I think that taking that design philosophy with slightly better technology IS the way. the R211 really feel like a design step back

Maybe there are better things the MTA can consider such as placing the R142's on the 1 and 3 lines since there are 880 cars (6301-7125) in the R142 fleet. This means when the 2 and 5 get R262's, then we can consider splitting up those R142's so that the 1 and 3 lines can each get 440 cars. Another thing considered is the 6 getting R142/A's or R262's. If its the R142/A, welp at least the R142/A wont get tortured by Jerome yard anymore but if R262's go on the 6, then the R142/A's will still run on the 4 line but if the R262's ran on the 4, then they would be dirty within a month. Thankfully, Jerome is beginning to take care of their R142/A's by giving them their mid-life overhauls. Also I don't think the 1 line would take care of their R142's cuz im pretty sure yall know how dirty most of their R62A's are.

I keep hearing people saying open gangway can't be done with sharp curves, Yada Yada Yada, but does the subway curve as sharply as the MBTA's green line? If we can do it, you guys can lmao Also, I think they should add an option order to add R262's to the 7; it could really use the open gangway capacity over the R188's, if it's reasonably possible.

Exactly. There have been a lot of excuses over the Gangways. Crime, Curves, and... Smells, are among the most used. Also, Idk about R262's to the (7), but if there are enough spare cars, I don't see why not.

@@MysticTransit as far as smells and homeless people go, these aren't fully open gangway... There's nothing stopping showtime people and whatever people from walking between cars now, so it's not like open gangway is letting them pass easier or whatever, and if there's a weird smell just move to the next 5 car set!

The open gangway idea makes since, as long as the ac is ALWAYS working lol. I like being able to switch to a cooler car when needed. I guess the systems will have to stay independent, so they can swap cars out. I guess we'll have to damn well like what they choose, or take the bus huh?😆

Recall, with the 62's, they did not favor the expresses and/or Lexington get the new cars first pattern. The 62 era favored the 1 and 4 (so the 4 is the only one that always had dibs on every new order), with handed down remainder to the the 6 (half) and 3. (2, 5 and 7 saw nothing but redbirds, initially). So it's possible the 262's could go directly to the 1, 3 and 6 (with the 4 getting its cut, of course, especially if they do try open gangway).

I personally think the 1 train should also get R262s, because they’ve had the R62as from the start of their careers and have taken very good care of them. And The 1 line receives more ridership than the 3 train so it would make more sense to send them to the 1 as well. If Jerome can’t take care of their 142s then why send the newest trains there. 240th street yard has better maintenance of their cars. But like you said it’s not the official assignments so it’s not a big deal. Nice vid by the way

I don’t know about y’all but I want something new in terms of train announcements. Like the mta should incorporate metro north/lirr announcements on the NYC Sunday. Maybe something as an example could be like… “ This is the 2 train to Brooklyn. The next station is Times Square - 42nd street.” Maybe for express trains where the next stop is far away then maybe during the travel the train announcement could say “The next station is Times Square - 42nd Street. Transfer will be available to the 1,3,7,A,B,C,D,E,F,M,N,Q,R, W trains and the Shuttle to Grand Central. Connections will be available to the Port Authority Bus Terminal”. So that way when the train is pulling into the station the announcement can just say the station name and that’s it

We don't have enough R188 cars to operate train levels seen in the 60s and 70s. This could depend on the R262 contract to replace R62 and R62A cars. The order is for 1500 cars. Approximately 30 cars would be used for the 42nd Street Shuttle in 6-car consists. That leaves 1470 cars. Assuming that the (2), (4) and (5) get them, and they get around 450 cars each, that does mean that we can see 120 cars go to other lines. Some R142/A cars would then be converted to CBTC ops for the Flushing Line. At least that's what I'm hoping. I will make some pretend roster soon. Here is what I'm suggesting in more detail. Assuming the R262 order is still 1,500 cars: (1): R142 (400 cars; 40 trains) (2): R262 (450 cars; 45 cars; interchanged with the 5) (3): R142 and R262 (170 and 120 cars respectively for 290 cars; 29 trains) (4): R262 (450 cars; 45 trains) (5): R262 (450 cars; 45 trains interchanged with the 2) (6) and : R142 (460 trains) (7) and : R188 and R142A (506 and 220 cars respectively for 726 cars; 66 trains each in 11-car consists) (S) 42nd Street Shuttle: R262 (30 cars; 6 6-car trains).
