New Sun Room Slider, and Some A/C Work.

Recently had a new slider for the sun room put in. Old one did not seal very well and just felt very cheaply made.
Recently had some A/C work done for the first floor. Needed refrigerant. Was actually a very positive experience. Some details below from the A/C guy which I did not cover in the video.
"I don't think there are any leaks, but if this does happen again, just let me know. I have a leak sealer I've used even in R-22 systems and it has held amazingly. But sometimes even these shrader valves might not seal just right, and there ya go."

Not really a fan of the new door. I'm sure it seals way better than the old one, but there are too many oddities with its design that would just bother me to know end. It's weird how the slider is on the outside rather than the inside. Perhaps it's configurable as such? The latch for it, nice that it has 2 latches, but they stick out from the frame of the door. That can easily catch on someone's clothing. Even if plastic and retractable, if they stick out, it can catch and snag. Huge design fail right there. The screen rolling up in the center is an automatic no, there is going to be the day when it won't roll back up. A sliding screen door wouldn't have that problem. For the A/C, it all makes sense. But why would one be low and not the other? Different guys/different days they were installed? I could potentially see a schrader valve not completely sealing and having the tiniest of leaks. That is something I have seen before.

Well nothing ever goes bad in Connecticut hun!! It's funny, the thoughts you had of the screen are what I started feeling as I was editing this. Amazing how these things always happen AFTER the video is recorded. Honestly, if it does end up failing, well, it's no money out of my pocket. I do know a friend's house had similar screens, though they were made in the early 2000s, but they still worked as well as they originally did when they sold the house in 2016, so, could be as lucky here. I also thought it was odd having the slider on the outside portion as well, until I remembered that's how the sliders at the other sun room were as well, I'm sure soon enough I'll get used to it. I think the latched should be okay, we'll see how that goes. I thought about the A/C, but isn't this similar to what you told me about your second floor one way back? Unless they both had to be done and I missed that. I guess it follows the thing of "No two things are exactly alike". If I remember right at the LI house, the basement unit was never recharged ONCE in the 18 years we had it, and the 2nd floor unit (the Ruud replacement), had some stuff added twice. So I guess it just depends really.

We just had our HVAC replaced at the beginning of April. We now have a Rheem furnace and AC and I noticed our filter drier is inside near the evaporator and not near the condensing unit outside. Ours is single stage as well and they wouldn't sell a 2 stage system which is what our next door neighbor had put in a couple years ago by a different company. The old furnace was no longer safe and got red tagged by the gas company but lasted 37 years and the HVAC installers recommended replacing the AC and was cheaper to do both at once.

Are Rheem and Ruud the same company? I am wondering since you had a Ruud unit at the Long Island house.

It's a shame that you already had to replace the slider when the house is still fairly new. Do you think the air leaks were due to poor design/manufacturing or possibly shoddy installation? Glad to hear the new ones seal up better. I still haven't powered my ac up yet this year. I expect it to be fine but when I have the furnace guy out for it's annual service he checks on the AC condenser as well. I usually have that done in early June.

It was definitely poor design. There was nothing else to adjust on it and it hardly sealed at all. Oh yeah yours is still very new so I'm sure it will be all good!

If a unit needs refrigerant, it has a leak, end of story. the answer is to find it with a leak detector and fix it, not dump sealant in there which can trash the unit if there's any moisture in the system and it will never be the same. sealant is a fix of last resort for 20+ year old systems not worth fixing properly. In canada, it is illegal to top off leakers - the us allows the bs of gas and go.

We'll see how it goes. One of my friend's units was apparently low about a decade ago, the guy added more, and it hasn't been a problem since. If it is low again, we'll have the guy come back and use a detector.

@@Sharkie626 it's a good idea to get it rechecked at the end of the season or at beginning of next spring. 2016 parts should still be under warranty if registered, so if your evap coil is leaking - the most likely part to leak, its in your interest to get is changed sooner than later. i can see checking the refrigerant repeatedly causing a unit to be low due to the loss each time, beyond that shouldn't need refrigerant

What about when you’re outside and you want to leave the screen open for air?

@@Sharkie626 no I meant if you leave the screen door when you go out and not close the glass door to allow air into the house on a nice day when the AC is not running.

@@petermaz701 Oh yeah, there's a handle for being able to operate the screen from outside.
