Start statin' that Energy Fuel is sugar-free and has a terrible diet aftertaste. Promote it correctly. I tried the Cotton Candy flavor you suggested once and it was awful. It was just a weird taste and then the aftertaste.... I needed to chug a real Mountain Dew to get it out of my mouth. It's not for everybody.

I feel something that goes a bit unsaid here is how many of this game's levels only work because it's 1 player. Going forward the series would be largely marketed as a multiplayer game and that required a completely different take on level design, leading to areas being much more spacious among other things. Changing the player count inherently changes the game and that sort of lead to this game being even more unique compared to it's derivatives.
@AC32896

With that in mind, you could say that the console games were multiplayer focused, And the handheld games were single player focused.

Experiencing this game upon release in high school was a formative memory for me. There are countless tales of people sitting around the cafeteria talking about games and hidden secrets in the 90s, but NSMB was that game in the mid 00s. NSMB is easily my favourite in the "New" series. It's the most experimental and takes the most risks, and the level design feels compact and everything feels like it has a purpose. By comparison the console entries especially often felt sparse and empty. I actually prefer NSMB2 over Wii and U for similar reasons, however it's no where near the pedigree of the first game. In fact, NSMB feels more like SMB5 than part of the New series, and for that I love it. It's also a huge bonus that NSMB has unique bosses, along with challenges like beating said bosses with the mini-mushroom. Why the sequels never tried something unique like this instead of Koopaling/Bowser Jr fights is beyond me. My personal series rating: NSMB NSMB2 NSMBWii NSMBU (U is the only game I never finished because I was so bored by the level design)

Most of the Mario movement mechanics you mention were actually introduce in a 2D Mario game called Donkey Kong 1994 for the Gameboy before making their way to 3D. It's a really impressive and overlooked gem. There are 99 levels each with 3 collectibles so it's the perfect challenge for a completionist channel!

about once every year i pick up my ds again and play around for a bit. this year i decided to delete one of my files on this game (i used to be so scared to do that and “mess up my progress”) and realized it’s sooo much more fun than i thought. to actually have goals and complete the game entirely is much more rewarding than going back and playing random levels that i completed as a child. i’ve been working at collecting all the star coins and am (kinda) close. this game and the wii version were a big part of my childhood, and i’m so happy that i still have them and can play them :)

I know this game is from 2006, but it took 14 years for me to fall in love with it. In 2018, I was in a coma and had to relearn to use my muscles and everything. When I was out of ICU and into a regular room, my brother let me borrow his 3DS and this game to help work on strengthening my hands and motor skills. I struggled at first but wound up finishing the game and moving (save for that horrible eel) every second of it. It will always hold a special place on my heart. And as always, great episode!

This would be what got me into Nintendo as a kid. When I was growing up, I didn't have a DS. Didn't really think I was missing out at the time. But my cousins had theirs as well as this game. So one day when we went over to their house, I got to try this out and immediately fell in love with it. I even got into watching Mario flash animations and everything after that. I still wouldn't get my hands on a personal copy for another 2-3 years, but when I finally did, I played the hell out of it. Excellent presentation, great soundtrack, smooth controls, it's aged really well in my opinion. Plus I can always boot it up and play the first world or so if I ever just want to feel like a kid again. Great episode as always, Jirard. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I agree with that but the point is that this isn't gonna last in like 2 generations more, like a new "new super Mario " would not be as good as the other games and people would get bored.

New Super Mario Bros. is my favorite game of all time. Every time a KZbinr talks about it, it makes me happy, because it's so underappreciated since the console games usually take the attention.

Yeah I love the final castle level, the music and level design made it feel like such a reward to play it, and also just how it looked in the overall going into it

I remember having a good time playing the minigames. I believe it had download mode, so a bus full of kids could all play together after school with just one cartridge.

This game is the definition of childhood to me. I legitimately started to tear up when you started playing the credits theme. Also, I’m a little disappointed you didn’t bring up Mario VS Luigi. It was one of the most dumb, fun additions to the game. I remember just getting with someone else who had a DS and we’d race to get stars until someone won or ragequit.

I remember loving this game so much that I 100% 3-star completed it on all 3 files. I didn't just copy my file over, I legitimately did them all as a new file. I don't see myself ever doing that again for any game, so NSMB DS always holds a special place in me.

I love this game, I love the feeling of building up speed and wahoo-ing over stuff. I know you were talking about how the game gets hated on, but generally I only hear good stuff about New Super Mario Bros (DS). In fact I think each New SMB game is good on its own, but people wanted to see what came “next”, and 5 games later we got Mario Maker.

This game literally did its job in introducing kids at the time to Mario. I feel lucky that at around 4 years old there was that trilogy of Mario games on DS (NSMB SM64DS and Mario Kart DS) that nicely showed people who are new to the world what Mario is and what to expect from it

I really hope you play NSMB2. I thought it was a very good game. I also love this one. I know a lot of people hate on the “waah waah”s of the music, but i love the way the enemies react with the music. I think the series as a whole deserves a lot more credit.

I remember the first time I played this game. It was June of 2006, and two of my older brothers took me to go see Cars in theaters. About an hour and a half before showtime, we stopped by GameStop to buy this game and DS Lite. We decided to sit in the theater auditorium early (it was a hot summer and we wanted air conditioning), taking turns playing the game.
