This is a speed run of New Super Mario Brothers 2, played and recorded on a modified 3DS that supports direct capture (www.3DScapture.com).
It uses the warp cannons on Worlds 1, Mushroom and Flower to complete the game in a really fast time.
A notable improvement over my previous year old record by 21 seconds. This is mainly thanks to newer strats, a different powerup route and most importantly skipping coin tally update delays after completing certain stages by maximising the counter.
As you see at the start of the video, there is the SDA stat id. This run will be published to SDA sometime in the future.
Timing:
Starts when I move Mario on the World Map screen
Ends when Mario touches the final big red switch.
Speed Runs Live style timing starts earlier (A button on File select and is roughly 51 seconds longer than SDA style timing, making it 27:30).
Speed trick:
Dash flying:
Regular flying is when you reach P-Dash speed and then press and hold the jump button to do regular flying, the only downside is that the speed actually decreases and is slower than dashing speed.
Dash flying is a term when Mario/Luigi is ascending height but has the speed equivalent to P-Dashing instead of the slower regular flying speed. This is done by mashing both Dash + Jump at the same time. This enables the plumber to stay at max speeds whilst flying.
Basic knowledge.
The somersault jump is unique as it is one block higher than the regular jumps. I use this on Worlds W1-1 and W6-5.
Doors, while it's faster in-game time to touch the very edge of the door, it's faster in real time to try and enter as close to the middle as possible.
Gold Fireballs are used on one stage to kill an Urchin guarding the pipe. For regular fireballs, it's the only NSMB game to have a fixed rate of fire, go right next to a wall and mash the fireball button, you'll probably only get 2-4 fireballs out after a second.
Picking up the Star not only makes the plumber invincible but it also increases his max speed. The most notable examples are Mushroom-1 and Flower-A
Flagpole: As long I don't hit the very top (1-UP) the score pops up from the bottom and rises to the very top. Then Mario/Luigi performs their victory dance and enters the castle.
Apparently, aiming for 2,000 points is the fastest way to finish the victory sequence.

For real time runners, yes. But, for TAS runners they’re one of the best parts. I’ve watched one of this channels NSMBDS TAS runs and that one tower in world 8 with all the snake blocks is honestly just the most entertaining thing ever, with midair jumps and the like.

When timing this run, it was a very high 39 seconds at around the 39.97x range. So high that, if I was slower by at least 4 or more frames, it would have been 40 seconds.

just so you know ... I've played SM64 and there's a LOT of tricks in that game where just a video won't give you a clue as to how to do it (I've watched way too many 0 star speedruns and still can't get the side BLJ to work. at least I can do 16 star) so maybe speedruns as walkthroughs aren't the best idea

This is a pretty good optimized game to speedrun. Almost every super mario game is fun to speed run just 2 or 3 buttons is all you need, beat a level in 15 secons. Simple but yet very hard to master

So on Mush-B does the ground not load until you touch it? If not, you could theoretically go through the whole level by memorization, I've seen it done in a speedrun of 3D land on an autoscrolling section

The auto scrolling stages works a little different to 3D Land. Platforms and objects including pipes only load up when the camera is close to it. In other words those stages are fully optimal.

when you collect the max of 9,999,999 you get a more fancy title screen. It has a useful effect for speedrunning because it skips mandatory coin updates after completing Tower, Castle and Warp cannon stages (see 5:18)

The main reason why I got this Gold Flower power-up: 1) Uses one transformation pause (Small > Gold Flower instead of Small > Super > Fire) and allows me to kill the Urchin guarding the pipe. 2) The wider blast radius from Gold fireballs is a lot more reliable than regular fireballs.

What A Cyanide Surprise it’s the most fun game to speedrun in my experience. Im not too great, but I highly recommend you do get into running it. If you have a twitch you can watch the current world record holder in his streams. Also if this is your only SMB game, I highly recommend getting NSMB1. Its my number 1 favorite Mario game ever. I got it when I was like 10, and I’ve been playing it for a decade
