1963.....#1 U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #1 U.S. Cash Box Top 100
Original video edited and AI remastered with HQ stereo sound.
"Surf City" is a 1963 song recorded by American music duo Jan and Dean about a fictitious surf spot where there are "two girls for every boy". Written by Brian Wilson and Jan Berry, it was the first surf song to become a national number-one hit.
In 1991, after moving to Huntington Beach, California, Dean Torrence helped convince elected officials that the town be officially nicknamed Surf City, USA. In 2006, the official trademark of "Surf City, USA" was granted to Huntington Beach after several back-and-forth lawsuits between Huntington Beach and Santa Cruz. As of 2009, more than 65 businesses in the city included "Surf City" as part of their name.
Released in May 1963, two months later it became the first surf song to reach number one on national record charts, remaining at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. The single crossed over to the Billboard R&B Chart where it peaked at number 3. It also charted in the UK, reaching number 26. Before the single, Jan and Dean made music which was largely inspired by East Coast black vocal group records. The success of "Surf City" gave them a unique sound and identity which would be followed by five more top ten hits inspired by Los Angeles surf or hot rod life.
The Beach Boys' manager and Wilson's father Murry was reportedly irate about the song, believing that Brian had wasted a number one record which could have gone to his group, the Beach Boys. Brian later told Teen Beat, "I was proud of the fact that another group had had a number 1 track with a song I had written ... But dad would hear none of it. ... He called Jan a 'record pirate'."

This reminds me of when they played this song in 1973 as a flashback to 10 years ago on Bandstand...many of the teens looked like they had no idea what this song was they were trying to dance to with enthusiasm...

Would anyone be surprised to learn that it was Brian Wilson, from the Beachboys and Jan Berry, from Jan and Dean, that wrote this song?

I can't understand it either, but here's oner for you. Bobby Darin's "Splish Splash" made the country charts,. What was country about THAT song? Also, Jan and Dean's "Sidewalk Surfin'" has the same melody as the Beach Boys "Catch a Wave."

Do we know where this came from? A great clip - good quality. Jan Berry was robbed of his legacy when he crashed his car in a near fatal accident in 66. He was an innovative producer and arranger.

Nothing to do with trains which are few and far between in California this is about 1934 car That they have cut down and converted into a hot rod using wooden panelling on the sides And made to go much faster to impress the girls at the beach. The song was part written by Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys who wrote several songs with a surfing theme it was US number one for two weeks

Because it's Brian singing falsetto & the rest of group doing harmonies. They sang on each other's recordings. Since they were on 2 different recording labels it was never acknowledged. Listen to Beach Boys "Party" album. You can hear Jan's voice distinctly on "Barbara Ann". Surf's up. Laird Hamilton rocks....

Jan and Dean have some great songs, but I've never seen them with a band. Of course, they played live concerts, so obviously there is a band involved. Did they have a regular group of players that made up the band Jan and Dean? If so, they must have been some pretty selfish, narcissistic assholes to not allow them to share some of the spotlight.

I'm sure it was the Wrecking Crew (whom I call the "Brian Wilson Orchestra") backing them up in the studio--Hal Blaine, Don Randi, Glenn Campbell, Carol Kaye, Lyle Ritz and all them guys. Now, what mystery musicians travelled with them on the road is anybody's guess. It wouldn't have been the Wrecking Crew, though---they were too busy with studio work
