I like Surly's approach to bike releases. When you're dealing with a technology that's as mature as steel bicycles, there's really no need to bring out something new every year. They know their customers aren't suckers who want the latest thing all the time, instead get what they need and keep it for as long as it satisfiest their use case. Other companies could really learn something from this, it say something about how confident Surly is that their bikes are about as good as they can get for the intended use.

Wife and I have a pair of 2018 ECRs. I probably need to clarify they are on 27.7+ turned by 2x10 drive trains. We use them primarily for loaded bikepacking. Our biggest trip was GDMBR. These were the bikes I thought I was going to have to custom build but Surly came out with exactly what I was planning. At this time I don’t see a viable alternative to these bikes. A 1x drivetrain is a non-starter for our uses. On GDMBR we rolled into a famous CO bike shop with a dozen others who we had been riding with since MT. Our inspection/repair cost for 2 bikes was less than anyone else for their single bike. I immersion wax chains and run tires at 15% drop (all 4 tires have unique PSI but contact patches end up all same size). Otherwise I don’t do anything special nor have I modified them. Also note, on all downhills, regardless of dirt, gravel, or pavement we comfortably out rolled every other bike packer we’ve ridden with. The 3” tires at the optimized tire pressure were extremely sure footed and the worse the surface the bigger our advantage in rolling speed. I don’t understand why none of the truly competitive Tour Divide racers have not used a 2x10 ECR. Whatever the weight penalty is perceived to be would be offset by the time I see them lose in shops or compensating for some component failure the last 500 miles.

One thing consumers should know is that big brands (Trek, Specialized etc) Dont actually change individual models every year. Most models get a new frame every 3-5 years or longer. They only change the paint and sometimes components every year, but it is the same bike. What they tend to do is rotate frame upgrades between models so that every year they have a few new bikes to advertise and create some bike envy. 3-5 years is still way too often. I really appreciate Surly for being honest about only changing colors and keeping good frames in production as long as possible. Really love the blue oyster Krampus... I already have one in tangled up in blue though haha.
@ottawabikeandtrail2 ай бұрын
Yeah, I agree with your point.
@Lepercurtidoo2 ай бұрын
Hello, nice video with really nice new colors. I love the blue oyster coat Krampus. I do have a question: the Krampus and the Ghost Grappler are very similar geometry. So I wonder if you would sit on a Krampus and a GG with exactly the same bars, seatpost, saddle, wheels etc it would feel exactly the same right? I have a GG and find the reach a bit long...
@ottawabikeandtrail2 ай бұрын
The geometry is slightly different. Bike insights is a good tool to get a comparison. I added the link here. Everything should swap over for the most part. The biggest difference is the stakc height on the GG, but the reach is slightly shorter. bikeinsights.com/compare?geometries=633c2fd8d597220023c28861,620ab37aefed3e002360096a,

I honestly don't understand the direction they took the Midnight Special. Not at all. If you look at the communities online where people share their Surly bikes, the overwhelming majority of MS owners gear the bike towards gravel primarily, but still agile on road. I would very much prefer the bike as a 1x setup with 700c wheel and large gravel/hybrid tires. And, this part is purely subjective, I think Fool's Gold looks horrible on the MS. Doesn't fit the frame at all. It was kinda cool on the Karate Monkey, but certainly not on the MS.
@GordoGambler2 ай бұрын
2 years ago I saw a tall guy with a beautiful blue MS, I think it had a 2x with 650B. He said he wanted to try tour with it. 80% of people are buying these other USELESS idiotic steep slope frames with a duck squat rear end. NUTS. Only 1x worth a damn is ROHLOFF14. No pie plate included. LOL I do 90 -120 mile rides on my custom tour build at 70+ lbs. My SA X-RD3 on a 1973 CCM gets me down the highway or city just fine as well. My SA XL RD5w is actually my fastest, but the middle gear keeps crapping around. It's done 46 mph. And anyway, there's NO brake better than the 90 drums, also on the front dyno hubs.
@ryanschmidt76912 ай бұрын
If the midnight special has a 12 speed cassette, isn’t the 2x just unnecessary dead weight?? Why would someone do this?
@ottawabikeandtrail2 ай бұрын
I think it’s in keeping with the road bike approach. Road bikes use 2x drivetrains allow you to fine tune shifting and maintain a specific cadence over long distnaces on mostly smooth roads. 1x works on gravel and off road because you aren’t as concerned about maintaining cadence.
The Midnight Special is not a gravel bike. It is a road bike. The geometry does not lie. It was a genre-defying fat-tired road bike with quick-handling road geometry. Riding this bike for long periods on rough gravel roads will fatigue you compared to the Straggler, or similar, bike with actual gravel geo. Ride your bike(s) wherever you want, however you want. Just don't call the MS a gravel bike. That is a disservice to your customers. Peace.
