I got a Synology diskstation a year ago and had a hard time configuring it. I love and hate the amount of settings at the same time. Probably the beestation would have been a good alternative for me. Thanks for the explanations.

Same here. This is exactly what I wanted and needed. The only concern is that if you dont have a secondary backup in some way if you lose the device - eventually that single disk is going to fail and then what ?

Yeah, I think the thought here is the files live on your phone/device and are backed up to this box. Then if you wipe your phone, etc, you can easily restore. And, if the drive dies, you typically would still have the data on your phone/device. For most home users this is likely fine, but yes I agree, I don't think we are the target market here.

RAID is NOT a backup. RAID is used to make sure that a business does not have an outage due to hardware failure. An actual backup is sticking an external hard drive on this thing and having it run hyperbackup

@@SpaceRexWill Don't think they consider RAID a 'backup' however I do agree this classifies more as an external HDD rather than NAS.

Sorry to hear that. It can be a fun hobby but it really is that, a time consuming hobby. Synology hardware holds its value pretty well so it might not be a bad idea to consider selling and purchasing this instead.

I’m really torn whether I should get this or a DS224+ for my parents. They would have zero intention of learning about the ins-and-out of the NAS software so the simplicity factor is meaningless. I almost feel a DS224+ is the far better option so I can setup SHR and a VPN server to remotely fix anything that needs it.

I am probably your parent’s age and somewhat technically experienced. Bought a DS223j 4 days ago. Spent the last 4 days and over 20 hours of frustration plus many KZbin videos trying to get it set up and working only to have it crash. Now can’t even log into it. Save your parents the frustration. A SSD and cloud service would be easiest, seems like beestaion might also be easy but I hate buying first generation products.

I have a larger Synology NAS that I don’t want tied to my Plex account. I’m looking for a secondary, budget-friendly NAS to act as a Plex media server for family photos, videos, and a small subset of my MP4 library (around 3-4TB max). It would need to work seamlessly with the Plex app on a Google TV streamer so my wife can access content easily. I’d transfer additional files to this secondary NAS from my main NAS as needed. I guess the answer depends on whether the Google TV streamer can do video transcoding but generally speaking, is the Synology BeeStation a good option for this?

Honestly a killer package for most users imho at this moment in time. I especially love the object detection possibility in the beePhotos App through hardware acceleration. For a normal synology diskstation you’d need at least 4GB of RAM to get this feature in synology photos. At that point you are looking at least at a DS224+ over double the price in package vs the beestation. I also like the possibility of SMB which enables streaming in local network too. The only gripe I have with it is the requirement of internet connection in order to use the apps. At least as far as I understand it. I’d like to keep the device more local in my network.

With the demise of the Apple Time Capsules a few years ago, that left a number of my friends and family without automatic time machine backups of their Macs. I told them to get a small external drive and plug it in every day or week to do a back up, but most people don't do it. So to me, this seems like it would be a great Time Capsule replacement if it can be easily set up to do Time Machine backups. It would be worth it just for that. When you spoke briefly about the SMB section you kind of breezed by the fact that it is set up to do Time Machine if this is enabled. Can you please do a quick tutorial on how to set one of these up to act solely as a Time Machine back up? I think you would be doing many of us a service in doing that. Thanks!

Well no, it's not a passive storage unit, it's a server with its own processor and operating system. It's an always-on network device that allows remote access and sync from multiple devices. You can't do that with an external HDD if you turn off the computer it's attached to.

Well I am at work and not able to be at home waiting for a tech to help me out. I returned it. I am sure I did not know what all the setting were for and the speed was due to me. I was used to an Apple Time Capsule that died. Can you use this with a mac and Time Machine? What are the expected read and write speeds?

This is a recipe for disaster. Before I had my Synology DS920+, I used an Apple time capsule for my backups and files. I became dependent on it without understanding drive lifespan and failures. They will likely put their files in this drive without regard for backup or redundancies. This will do the same thing for users as Apple does with the time capsule. As users fill up the drive up to 3T, they will see later that it will be hard to manage when the drive life ends. They will need a cloud-based backup or migrate their data by buying another Bee Station. This second alternative will entail technical knowledge unlikely to a Bee Station user.

The device is above all an easy way to lose your data. However, this is not just a problem with this device, but with all NAS devices in general. With the more professional devices, it is actually assumed that the user installs a UPS themselves. But with this simple device, the rather inexperienced user is guaranteed not to do anything like that. And even if he does, I don't see an option here that would shut down the BeeStation in the event of a power outage if the UPS battery runs out at some point. This means that the data is on a hard drive that is constantly active and is not connected to a fail-safe power supply. In the event of a power failure or accidental unplugging, the hard drive can always be damaged. Any laptop that has an external hard drive connected to it is much, much safer in this regard. Synology should have installed a small battery here that would at least ensure a safe shutdown in the event of a power failure.
@SpaceRexWill
@SpaceRexWill 9 ай бұрын
This power loss issue normally comes from the RAID5 write whole, which in this case is not possible due to it being only a single drive. So your COW BTRFS should pretty much protect you from anything power loss wise
@TingleCowboy
@TingleCowboy 9 ай бұрын
@@SpaceRexWill As far as I know, it's not just RAID 5 that is affected by so-called write holes. Sure, a single drive is not a RAID, but I'm not sure if COW is enough to ensure data integrity in all cases. And to be honest, I find it totally incomprehensible that almost every electronic device, no matter how small, now has a battery, except a NAS.

It is misleading for Synology to market this device as a replacement for cloud storage. A cloud subscription typically includes backups; without a Synology C2 subscription plan, you only have the BeeStation with its built-in hard drive and whatever device you choose to keep the originals on.
