Hi Rick. Thanks for the great review as always. It seems to me that because of the design limitations imposed on manufacturers, that they have pretty much maxed out distance performance. Should we not be focusing more how forgiving they are compared to previous models (both distance and dispersion) as this is probably also more important for most average golfers?

PSA: In the last 10 years Dustin Johnson has gained 4 yards of distance with his TaylorMade Driver (308 vs 312) Jason Day, another long time TMag staffer has also gained 4 yards in the last decade (298 vs 302). Note that driving data is also influenced by improving player ability, ball technology, biomechanics and conditioning. Even if you wanted to put these gains solely down to driver technology the best case scenario is a gain of 36cm per year. Guys, there are no distance improvements to be found in your wallets.

J P 100% of that comes from the TP5 ball. They're maxed out because of regulations. The new frontier is more consistent ball speed and spin across the face (aka forgiveness). There's been nothing to be gained on center strikes for almost a decade now.

Christian Conrads Of course - I shouldn't have said 100%. My comment had more to do with the known fact that the TP5 & TP5x have been more successful at getting driver spin down so they're a few yards longer than the Pro V1, although the 2019 Pro V1 mostly closed this gap. I hit TM drivers for years (3 hdcp) and gained no distance since SLDR, but SLDR was the wildest driver I've ever owned. I did an extensive fitting this year and there's no significant difference in ball speed among the top driver brands. It's all about fitting for head/shaft combo. A handful of them I hit like crap (looking at you TS3) but that's all personal. Ended up with F9 because I got amazing results with heavier weights at a shorter length but I could've done the same thing with TM or Callaway (but no reason to spend the extra money).

If you are buying a driver just to gain distance then you better be getting fitted. I have a 2003 Ping is380 driver that I hit 260-265. I have a 2013 Ping Anser that I hit 260-265. I have a TM M2 that I hit 260-265. The only difference between my 2003 Ping and my 2017 M2 is that I consistently hit it my max distance. The sweet spot is better across the face and it's more forgiving on mis hits. With today's drivers you are not buying distance, rather you are paying for consistency and forgiveness. Seems like those features are easily marketable.

Dane, make the effort to play a little golf and if it's the game for you it will be the most engaging game/sport you ever tried. Chidren to old men like me can play. I started playing at 72. Shame not to spending time in this world and not be savour the satifaction of a good, square, ball strike and watch your ball arcing across the sky. Plus, most of us that love the game will go out of our to help you someone giving golfing a go to really enjoy playing thrmdelve. Hi Rick ! I'm a french clubmaker who's been working with Tom WISHON for almost ten years. Tom actually invented the concept of sliding weights on a driver to enhance a fade or a draw in 1996. But he knew from testing (it takes about 18 months to create a new head design) that it requires at least 30 grams of weight on the sole to really change the shot shape. He went even further and created a weight of 40 grams that could REALLY promote a draw bias. BUT he had to come up with a 375cc clubhead since 40 grams was too heavy to create a volume of at least 440cc that the golfers were expecting. So his design (called 715CLC, you can google it) did not sell because of this small volume. And this is why ever since the driver heads he has developped do not have a sliding weight. It simply does not work with a 20ish grams that you can find today on some models. Best regards from Bordeaux, France !

@@chadjackson4786 I haven't changed my R9 Supertri because it looks too good and the new ones are so ugly, and I'm sure they perform amazing but man are they ugly. Looks like a transformers. There are better looking drivers out there but I have a weird thing about my woods being the same brand. I really thought they where going to bring it in 2020 but guess no. Also, if they could take away the ugly white parts and black them out, it'll improve by 1000. The mini driver is a good example of how they could look by blacking it out. The mini dirver looks very fine but not for a mid handicaper obviosuly.

I just purchased the SIM Max Driver and 3 Fairway based solely on their forgiveness. At almost 61 years of age, I know my days of launching the ball 285+ yards are over...just need to get it up in the air and keep it in play. Both of these clubs will help you do that!

True, the tech is all max out on the head, the shaft is last frontier- I put a Fuji Ventus Black 6-s in the hand made Velus line ($350 ) into the M% demo paid $350. Trying snag SIM Max and move the shaft. By far, this shaft is most consistent and plenty long . This MOi is real, just means it resists twisting from off center

What I have learned from watching all of Rick's videos about new clubs is that, you shouldn't worry about replacing clubs until they are between six to seven years old. I'm still hitting a 2000's ping g5 and the Callaway epic is only about one yard longer and the Ping only set me back $40!

Hey Robert... That's the exact move I made in November... 2017 M1 to Cobra F9... It's worth the $ for the upgrade just be sure to get fit for your shaft and weight settings.

What "Brian Robertson" said! I, too, went from M1 to the F9 and have zero regrets. Maybe it's just me but the F9 works for me in every way, and though I hit the M1 well at times, I just didn't get on with it as consistently as I'd have liked. Given Rick's comparison of the F9 vs. Speedzone showing virtually NO performance differences, you could get your hands on a new F9 for half of a SIM. A no-brainer. Good luck!

Great review Rick. It just shows you that under current USGA rules drivers are already close to their maximum performance. Buying new drivers year after year is senseless even if money is no object. The best decision one can make is to get fitted with the proper shaft. That gives you the best chance to maximize your driver’s performance.

Appreciate the honest reviews. Another tester hit the m5 338 yards with m5 vs m3 but in another test hit m5 313 yard with m5 vs sim. I know we don’t hit it the same every day but 25 yards is unbelievable, btw he hit sim 335 yds. I guess they don’t think we can look at previous tests.

Actually M6 had similar to cobra speed back last year. The idea that they copied cobra is silly. SIM is an extension of the M6 shaping. But the asymmetric shape is certainly different than both cobra and the M6 driver

To everyone saying it is a direct copy of the f9, did you not see the m6? I think it looks like a newer rendition of the m6 more so than an f9. Just my opinion. Still like the looks of the f9 more but let's be real, 90% percent of people dont even use the full potential of any new clubs. I had a taylormade R7 425 that I bought 14 years ago brand new. Loved that club. The sound and feel was great. Unfortunately my friend asked if he could try it off the tee during a round. (He's not very good btw) and he hit a shot so bad he dented the top of it. Was mad about it but I figured, what the heck, it served me well over the years. Time to buy a new one. Bought this today and after watching this review I can't wait to use it. I am a taylormade fan through and through. My irons, wedges, woods and putter are all taylormade. Love their products and am willing to pay a bit more. Typically wait until a year or two have passed after a new release so the price goes down but I couldn't wait with this one. :-)

I am a single digit golfer who uses a TaylorMade Burner Driver that is about a dozen years old!! I’ve put it to test against the best every year, and keep saving money! The stats tell the tale! ... great spin rate and distance. The only slight difference is in dispersion data. Rick I really enjoyed the format of your new videos breaking down each component of the driver, excellent job in more detail. That being said, seeing photos/videos of the new Taylormade SIM I feel it looks terrible from underneath. I will have to make my own opinion when I see one looking down at it when addressing the ball. You had said in the video that someone with a five-year-old plus driver may take advantage of the new technology in this driver, I currently use a RBZ 3W In place of a driver, have much more consistency and control with it. With all the innovations in travel technology in last few years it makes me want to try getting back into the traditional driver field again. Thanks for the great content.

Okay my first thought on the SIM driver was that it doesn’t look as good as previous models. But I have to admit that I really like the look oft the crown. Price wise they had to go down because of Cobras big success with the F9 and the success Cobra will have on the SZ. I’ll give it a hit anyway 🤪

I am a 6 handicap. I tried both drivers the other day and found the SIM Max to be better suited for me, partly because I didn't see any difference when I adjusted the movable weight on the SIM. The SIM Max I tested had a 10.5 loft with a had a 50gram regular flex shaft and the SIM had a 9.0 degree loft with a stiff shaft so I noticed a higher launch angle with the Max which is to be expected. With my swing speed nearly 95-100, I got more distance with the Max when combining the higher launch, high spin with a regular flex shaft than I could generate with the SIM that had a 9 degree loft with a stiff shaft. Thanks for your video because I didn't see any difference with the movable weight either.

I just got the sim a month ago and I’ve driven 2 par 4s that I have to carry water. 1 was 320 and the other 310. I’ve gained ball speed and distance from the m1 I was hitting. It’s the best driver I’ve ever hit. And it’s so consistent

You won't go wrong with the f9 best driver out there for sure in the right hands. Changed from a ping g410 plus which i loved but the f9 just gives me more distance and accuracy.

@@gearbox1858 got to disagree had epic flash last year couldn't lace the cobra f9 boots and i used to play all callaway clubs for over 10 years. Switched loyalties now I've got ping and cobra in the bag. Big companys like Taylormade and callaway offer nothing over the smaller boys but cost you a small fortune to pay for there advertising

Darren bell maybe for you. Epic flash has proven to be be fastest driver with the highest balls speeds. Go check out My Golf Spy or GolfWRX tests from the top fitters in golf. Epic flash always wins in all categories. Nothing else comes close. I got my fitting done at TXG in Toronto and Flash SZ destroys F9 ( for me ) and most others.
