New Teensy 4.x Support for O_C • November 2023 • Phazerville

Ornament & Crime is evolving - Teensy 4.x support is here! A new hardware design is in the works! The future looks bright for this programmable open source Eurorack utility.
All the original firmware apps + Hemisphere are now running natively on Teensy 4.0 and 4.1, which are readily available. The CV inputs are noisy, but I think it's usable! Big thanks to Paul Stoffregen for his contributions to the project! New hardware designs should be released very soon, with improved ADC precision, more I/O, and potential for expansion.

Where might we go for updates on this updated ornament and crime hardware project? I'm looking at the Plum audio OCPx at the moment, but I love the idea of an ornament and crime with trigger outputs as well.

i2c has been discussed for expanders or connections to other existing modules 😉

I2C and MIDI (serial, USB host, USB device) are planned, but S-Bus is not.

Nice work! How are you finding the noisy ADC in the teensy 4. used on current boards such as the plum audio 1u o_c? Tempted to pick up a pcb and panel to build with a teensy 4 if its all good. Does all of the quantisation precision work as well etc?

The T4 ADC is effectively 10-bit vs 12-bit on the T3.2. It doesn't bother me, since I primarily use it for generative sequencing and not quantizing external sources, but I still think it's adequate for such things. VOR won't work on T4 tho - you'll have to set the jumper to NV for Plum Audio.

Hi DJ PHAZER. Currently I am planning a Nifty Keyzs and I have only 10 hp left. I planned to include a OCP-X. Now I’ve been watching your video and asking myself, what will be the physical width of your new module? Is it 10 hp?

It is exactly 10HP! But, until it's available, I would still recommend the OCP X for performance controls - the buttons and attenuators are fantastic.

It's basically the same on either... screen size is the primary limitation. But I just added full-screen view in v1.7.1 😉

@DJPhazer thanks for the quick answer. Your firmware has me in the market to re-purchase an o_c module. Is there any other practical reason to prefer the versions with the new teensy? I don't think I need 8 channels.

The 8-channel hardware isn't available yet... and newer uO_C units are being made with Teensy 4.0 simply because 3.2 is discontinued. 4.0 has larger storage, but the experience isn't much different (yet)

Life got in the way and it stalled... Paul also had some reservations about making it open source. I'm trying to get the hype train going again, see what happens by Knobcon! 👀
