I marched with Dr. King in 1968 shortly before he was murdered in Memphis. As we marched, I was startled when a young black man broke the window of a store on my right. The young man had not been with us in the African Methodist Episcopal Church where Dr. King had spoken and we sang, “Like a tree planted by the water, we shall not be moved.” He didn’t say to be confrontational. Two so-called friends did. We had picketed a restaurant where the one black student in our college was not allowed. The philosophy students suggested we provoke the police so they’d mace us. We laughed. They just kept drinking their beer and smoking their pipes in the student lounge.
