Throw rocks in other anglers holes if they're getting fish to scare those trout into your hole

I grew up drift fishing salmon & steelhead with a Mitchell 300, using hip waders year round from sunny to pouring rain & loved every minute of it. Now as I’m trying to learn how to fly fish I see that the transition of required knowledge is extremely vast & sometimes overwhelming. I greatly appreciated the amount of information you’ve covered in this video. I’ll be sure to watch it several more times as I eagerly look forward to mastering this way of thinking. Mega Thx !!!

Great summary of factors that affect the trout and how to adjust accordingly. The thinking part is where I am always trying to improve! I know watching this several times will keep yielding great tips. Love the thinking process flow chart. ❤ Thanks James.

Thanks! It's just a full angle perspective on fishing trout, and it looks like a very honest and well-reasoned summary of a long-time work dedication.

Great educational content. I spotted the Confluence Outfitters logo on a hat at 6:37 and that was cool! They are based here where I live in Red Bluff, CA and great guys and guides. So that tells me you are also awesome!!!

Haha they’re a great crew! I’m headed back to California in May for presentations in the Sac area and can’t wait to fish NorCal again. Luke’s an okay guide I guess 😂

Dude this is such a helpful video. i'm 14 which means i don't get infinite rides to the river. I try to maximize my experience I get out of a trip. I'm still trying to master fishing baetis hatches for steelhead in NorCal. I caught a 23 inch steelhead on a size 20 Baetis perdigon I tied! I also caught a 30 inch hatchery steelhead that I cooked for the Super Bowl which was epic. This video filled in some of my missing links on how water temperature and bug life affects the fish. Great video James!

Awesome man! Definitely bonk hatchery fish. Glad you found it useful and keep at it. When I was 14 we didn’t have youtube or iPhones which is making me feel really old. Sounds like you’re having a great time fly fishing and that’s the most important part.

Cheers Bro. Nice overview. BTW, do you think the Juan has a sizeable population of crayfish? I personally have never seen one there, but then again, I have never really looked for them.
@AboutTrout9 ай бұрын
To my knowledge the QW doesn’t have them but the Chama and Rio Grande have a ton of them. They’re all over the country, some trout rivers have them some don’t.

Great video! I noticed on your screen shot of the euro nymph rig that your point fly was unweighted and your dropper fly had the weight. Can you explain why you like that approach? Also, what are your thoughts of attaching second fly off the bend of point fly hook? Thx
@AboutTrout9 ай бұрын
I like an un weighted fly off the point if I’m fishing the San Juan and fishing a small midge on a euro rig. It all depends on the situation. For larger hooks, If they’re not factory barbless I’ll go off the bend especially dry/dropper. For smaller hooks #20 ish and below I like to go eye to eye to have as much hook gap as possible.
