Late winter is a great time to start a rose garden. There is still time to check and prepare soil, work with space for future roses and research different varieties. I feel that many young rosarians get so excited about introducing roses to their gardens, that they forget some important aspects of rose growing. I'd like to add a postscript, drawn from my own experience. Caring for one' s roses does not mean being a slave to them, but in my own case, simply expecting to give them UP TO a half hour of attention per day. I found that it was far more helpful than giving them 3.5 hours every Saturday. I'm on a small lot, so I am tending only a couple dozen plants which are scattered all around the place. (Front & back yard, down the hill, etc.) I'm in Zone 6b-7 (Central PA), so of course, in winter I sometimes just take a quick walk around the lot.

Agree, Joel. Small amount of time each day is better, we can see small changes, catch the problems at the beginning stage and enjoy our gardens on a regular basis. Happy Gardening!

That sounds all wonderful, and you have famous Ukrainian soil! Your roses will be very happy. May I suggest, instead of daily watering, probably give your roses a deep soak every 2-3 days, depending on the sun conditions in your area. Ukrainian black soil has good water holding capacity and your roses will be thriving in no time! Glory to our dear Ukraine!

Great information Olga! Fortunately my sawfly damage is small. Only 3 or 4 bushes get chewed on. I defoliate the surrounding area of the bush and it a strong stream of watter spray to relocate the little rascals. The big issue for me last year was killing 5 PW azalea bushes. I think I over fertilized them. PW wouldn't replace them since they the hardiness zone is up to 9 and I am in zone 10. I have been growing azaleas for 35 years and this is the 1st time I have lost plants. My lesson learned is to lightly fertilize plants until they are established. Slow release fertilizer would have been a better approach. Hope you get an early Spring.

I've never seen sawfly on my azaleas, interesting! My azaleas are prone to scales though. I know the urge to put extra fertilizer, especially for young plants. I also learned hard way in the past.

So right about always learning Olga, I just learned a few more things watching this! Though we have always been in stuck in full sun the mantra of 6hrs full sun in the morning and afternoon shade was supposed to be in stone. Very helpful to dry out the morning dew to prevent fungal disease and keep colors from washing out in the hot afternoon sun, but Golden Celebration in that perfect setup gets black spot before the one in only afternoon shade! Go figure. PS: will NEVER get tired of looking at your garden. Such Beauty.

I’m so intrigued that River valleys have less acidic soil- I live sandwiched between two rivers in an area referred to as “the valley.” I have always assumed we had acidic soil, but now I wonder. I do have a test kid I haven’t used!

Yes, alluvial soils (soils which were flooded by rivers in the past), especially newer ones are more alkaline or neutral. Older alluvial soils can be more acidic. I don't know about the age of my soil and when it was flooded , but we live on a pretty high hill on the river. Whatever it is, I am happy that my roses love their soil. And by all means do your testing, and know for sure.

Thank you for these tips! I live in Arizona -Phoenix area 9b and just beginning roses in my west facing no shade backyard. I planted my 1st rose bush I ordered from proven winners in November. It hasn’t grown because of our winter. Hoping to see it grow next month as temps warm up soon.

I'm plotting a garden refresh in my front yard where it's in full sun all day. Perfect for roses. I've coveted your 'Lady of Shallot' roses forever, but until now, didn't have a suitable space for the sizable shrub. This video is perfectly timed. But since I garden in zone 4b it saddens me what you said about purchasing roses a zone lower. David Austin starts at zone 4. I lost two roses after one season so I'll be testing DA's 5-year guarantee. This year, our snow cover is significant so I may be in luck 😏

Hi there. I have a suggestion… if you have Facebook look up this rose group. Growing Roses in Cold Zones. I see many people in your zone growing beautiful roses. I believe the key is to grow own root that way if they die back they will come back. I don’t know if you’ve tried giving them a little protection or not. Join that group, ask questions and go back look thro the archives and you will find beautiful pictures if not lots of helpful advice.

Yes, don't feel discouraged. Since you garden in zone 4b, you really can't grow roses good in zone 5, but there are so many roses now on the market, that you will have plenty to try out and plant.Try and give your roses great winter protection. Facebook group is a great suggestion from Adaline.

@@OlgaCarmody Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. The in-ground-planted rose I lost last winter was wrapped in a special bag made for winter protection. The other rose I had planted in a container and moved that to my unheated attached garage for winter. The "Minnesota Tip" method was invented at our U of M. It's a lot of work digging up half the roots so the plant can be tipped over and buried in an adjacent trench. My DA rose roots were exceptionally long. I did nothing last fall except wrap the two remaining roses with hardware cloth to keep bunnies from nibbling too low on the plant. They prune for me. 😏 🥴 I've successfully avoided FB for more than two years now. 👏

Hi Olga. Forgot to ask when is it wise to prune the roses. Zone 7B here but I see little little growth already but heavens we are in the middle of winter. Should I be patient still? thank again

The time to do it is just at the beginning of spring, when buds are ready to unfurl their leaves. I wait for my neighbors forthysia to start blooming and then I go and do all the pruning. If you do it now, you will force your rose to start pushing new growth… and we are just at the beg. of Feb. For my region, February in very unpredictable. Leave it to forthysia to decide… Plants know their affairs better than us.

Wow, we had crape myrtle in our garden and had to take it out, it will be sticks for 8 months of the year, and then will have a rapid growth in June - August. We, gardeners, love to test the limits of our gardens. I do it with shade all the time. Happy gardening!
