When I was starting out as a new wig wearer I kept thinking I looked ridiculous in the wigs I got UNTIL I took a photo of myself in it. When I looked at the photo, I realized how great it looked. Give that a try, especially if you’re thinking that there’s just too much hair because you’re not used to seeing yourself with a “normal” amount of hair. And yes, I agree with the make-up first tip.

I agree with your tips, but....people with long thin faces will probably not be happy with so many of the wigs with permatease at the crown. I think we are best served by purposely choosing wigs that advertise minimum permatease. Otherwise I feel like one of the Coneheads from SNL. ha

I appreciated this video, Jill, because I have just convinced a family member to try wigs and I am afraid she will immediately hate any wig I recommend because she doesn't know what to expect and how to prep the wig on her head. I am going to save this video to show her. I want to get her here to try the wigs on so I can help her. I have had all the reactions you describe here. I wish I had known 7 years ago, what I know now. No one had videos like this to help me! xo

Jill, this is an excellent video. So educational, and reassuring to wig newbies, especially the recommendation to..."PUT ON MAKEUP!" Even if I do my bio hair in an attractive style, it doesn't look right until I put my makeup on. As a retired cosmetologist, and having worked in the fashion industry, personal styling, modeling and theater, I can tell you that makeup, is THE most transformative move a woman can make. I'm extremely enthusiastic about high fashion and the proper fit in one's clothing, and I've seen incredible transformations when a woman puts on a flattering outfit, but I still say makeup has the most impact over all. Thanks, for all you do for the wig-wearing community. Maybe, someday, we will dispense with the stigma attached to White women wearing wigs. (Because we all know that Black women really know how to own, and ROCK! those wigs.) But for now, having a supportive community is priceless. ❤
@jmk19623 жыл бұрын
Good point about black women wearing and rocking their wigs. I think us white women over think wig wearing. If we can just get over the idea and have the confidence to "go for it" and own it, then we'rechalf way there. It's all about confidence and I for one think Jill looks fabulous and if i met her in person, i would never think "is that a wig" as she wears it with such confidence.

Thank you so much for this Jill💕. To echo Amy T.'s previous comment, I too feel blessed to have found you on KZbin. You have a wealth of knowledge which you impart in a way that is so reassuring and encouraging. One of your comments in particular hit it right on the nail. I think the issue I'm having with the topper (my first) I just got is that all my life I've lived with fine, thin (and getting thinner by the day it seems)hair and so to see myself suddenly with such a significant amount of it looks strange to me and will require an adjustment phase. I was touched too by the comments from others. I didn't realise that there so many women just like me and dealing with the same struggles. Thank you again Jill for lighting the way for us💕

Hi Jill! Just wanted to thank you for reviewing the less expensive wigs like Toni Brattin, Paula Young, Rene of Paris, etc. Those are the type of wigs I wear because of my budget and because I like to have a good assortment to wear based on my mood that day. The very pricey ones may be more comfortable, but I can't justify the cost. Thanks for all you do!

You can't beat Raquel upstage or untold story for a gorgeous wig, it's got a mono top, lace front, it's heat friendly, it's NOT shinny and they look great right out of the box! I decided to try a red since redheads run in my family and wow my family loved the color on me, who knew! I just wear a wig grip and add some stick it/ wig clue. Oh I finally love putting on these wigs and love how I'm looking these days. My bio hair was SO THIN it made me feel sad. Now I'm loving putting my makeup on, I found an Auburn brow pencil and a great shade of lipstick. Also now my green eyes pop due to the red color wig. I chose shaded ice pumpkin spice, a gorgeous color. The lace front is undetectable. Happy am I now ..yay!!!!! Raquel Welsh wigs are stunning. I like spraying her with a dry shampoo even though it is not shinny. Today I wore one side behind my ear and wore a square band headband too. I saw people looking at me in the grocery store, I asked my husband why and he said because you look beautiful ❤️ wow I'm 70 years old too. If I could post a picture in here I bet people would be lining up to buy either upstage or untold story or both. It's not ME it's how gorgeous these two wigs are. Amazing how it changed how I feel about my new look.

Hi Jill, I must say such weird timing! I was just about to send u a message but I stopped to listen to this. U just mentioned something to the effect of bad/cheap Amazon wigs and I almost talked to the screen again! I just got my first Amazon wig a few days ago and I loved it from the moment I put it on. No kidding! Yes, it has perma tease, but the hair fibers r so soft and natural looking that touching it felt like my bio hair used to feel. I've watched all your videos on Brattin wigs, and held out from buying one just in case I found an even less expensive one from a different brand, and I did! I ordered another one yesterday and can't wait to see that pkg come! Everything u just said was SO RIGHT ON TARGET. I just don't think I can b as good at everything u do to adjust a wig to my liking. You r so talented and beautiful. Keep it up. Thanks 4 all the info! Diane😁👩🔧

I haven't returned a wig yet, but I have resold one on Ebay. Part of the problem is we can no longer go to a wig store and try on wigs. Returning 7 wigs is not that much when you consider that you'd try on at least that many at a wig store. Unfortunately, returning is the new way of "trying on" and rejecting styles that don't work. Hopefully we can get back to shopping for wigs "in person" soon.

Great video with loads of useful tips. Maybe you could make a video where you show newbies how to wear and style a wig straight out of the box. I mean showing what not to do like just stick it on your head and say oh, god that looks awful so wiggy. I think a lot of people do that as they don't have the skills you have to play with them and style them properly. Showing "what nit to do" and then styling the same wig properly could show them how to make any wig look good.

I totally agree with you about many of your tips...especially the makeup. When I have tried without, I don't like the wig, so know now to wait til I put on makeup and re -try....HOWEVER...you talk about doing all these things to the wig, like shaking it etc,...but the wig stores all tell you, not to shake, not to comb, etc. or they will not let you return. What is your experience with that? Because all the things you said about taking the wig and trying to make it work for you are important, but I get scared to do anything with them because if I don't like the wig and want to return, they will not let me. Some companies even say you can't even try them on...(yeah, right. How is anyone suppose to buy a friggin wig if you don't try it on???)..So that means you cannot play with them. I have only sent back 2 of 5 wigs, and I love the ones I have, but I would like this issue to be addressed because most of the companies do NOT want you to play with them....It's no wonder that people send them back.

I have sent several Paula Young wigs back because I felt the wefts showed too much in the crown. I am sending my third Brattin wig back because of color. The brownblonde is very dark and reddish. So I tried the light brown. Well it is dark brown and reddish. I also think the Brattin fibers are too coarse. I too love the square headbands, but I have had the most fun taking cheap headbands and decorating them with lace, ribbon, beads, etc.

Hello Jill. I really appreciate your honesty and tips on this subject. I have 2 questions as a soon to order a wig person 😊. First your review rom about a month ago on the Jon Renau wig Elisha. When I looked at her at Patti’s pearls, I will say that I NEVER would have ordered her, as the style on the model looks nothing close to as good as it looks on you. So, how do you pick which wig to purchase? Another question is this:as a first time wig wearer would you recommend to purchase something to play around with, as in something inexpensive? I thought I might order Raquel Welch’s Editors Pick Elite as I will have an extra bit of cash soon, and I wanted to get something I think I will like the most. Is there a first timers wig you would recommend or would you recommend to get one that is the best you could afford with the comforts of the lace front, ear tabs, hand tied, etc? I have had that thin and fine hair all my life and have never liked fooling around with my hair because it always seemed I noticed hair fall out when handling my hair. My stylist recently tried to educate me on using a flat iron and after an hour and a half appointment she told me I was banned from using this tool as she said I just was too challenged to do things right, this included using the hair products, drying technique, etc. I do have the will and capacity to learn so I will finish off the “new to wigs” series. Thank you and sorry this is so long😰🤗

I don't know how I missed this, Sheri! These a great questions, and if you don't mind would like to cover them in a Friday LIVEstream in our Q&A segment. I know this is late...but, I would purchase the best you can afford, because as a first time wig wearer it is going to improve that experience, and set you up for a good start. I will say...no matter what though you WILL feel wiggy (even if it looks natural and beautiful on you) because as you said....you have always had fine, thin hair. Give your 'eye' a bit to get use to seeing yourself with head of hair. Your second concern...you have the will, and desire to learn so YOU WILL. ;) To be honest I RARELY take heat to ANY of my wigs...it's always my last resort...however, heat (on heat friendly fibers) can actually revive them when used properly...but, I hardly ever feel the need to change the style, so it's not something I do often.

Mainly, will this work for me. lol I come back to your channel because the wigs you choose, your experience and skill with makeup and skincare definitely are amazing. If they could make half that much impact with me, I would be thrilled! I've started with a topper, which was a bad choice in color, then I bought two Tony Brattin wigs, one in the light blonde, one reddish blonde, which were good to practice with, but I still feel wiggy.They are a little itchy and they ride up in the back and the sides. My measurements are almost the same as yours except I'm 22"where you're 21". I want to buy the Ignite maybe in shaded praline next, although I like the lighter blonde, it looks so good on you, but it's a drastic change from my darker hair. Maybe I need to lighten my own hair so I would not feel such a drastic difference, plus I feel a little fake, and think everyone knows I'm wearing a wig .

Non rooted tend to look a bit more "wiggy" IMO because they lack the depth that rooted wigs give. They lack dimension as no ones real hair is ever totally one colour unless it's box dyed. That's why the rooted wigs look more real.

GREAT answer, Jill. I think we just have to be excited about a wig, how easy it is to just pop it on, how freeing it is. I also like when you put on a cute headband, which adds both color and style. Try wearing it at home until you get used to it and seeing yourself in it. Then go shopping in it, somewhere you know you won't bump into anyone you know. Keep looking at yourself in mirrors in the shops and see yourself as others will see you. Get used to it first before wearing it around family and friends so that by that time you are familiar with it and feel comfortable in it and that will automatically make you feel more confident about wearing it.

The Jon Reanu measurement website was great. However, I’m still a little confused on my wig size. My circumference is 21, ear to ear is 11, and front to back 11. Would I need a petite or a child size? Some wigs look like I’m wearing a colored mop on my head. No hairstylist in my area will cut a synthetic wig, so getting it thinned out or shaped is not a option.
@JillLynnBeautyTherapy4 жыл бұрын
You always want to go with the largest size. Sounds like you would want an Average. You may be like me and have child size measurements in there as well....which makes for bunching up behind the ears, and such....but, I just make sure that doesn't happen by pushing them up on the wig grip, or when not wearing a grip, I'll use some IT STAYS to keep it from doing that. I would do a google search to see if you have any wig shops nearby you....they often have wig stylists available for a fee...or often if you purchase from them, it's included.

I went on Amazon and through a seller called Christie’s Wigs and I got your favorite one after watching all of your videos I got ignite by Jon Reneau (my first wig) it wouldn’t fit, at all! I even got it in Shaded Praline like you have although I had plans on getting Palm Springs Blonde, too. The color wasn’t right and it would not stay on my head. The lace was already trimmed? Is that normal for ignite? I thought I measured my head right after watching all your videos. I will go watch that link you put up on Jon Renau about measuring because I was close to the size large on, but you said your measurements were close. Is this because I went through Amazon? Or if I am a large is ignite even possible? I paid 187.00. Thanks for your channel.
@JillLynnBeautyTherapy4 жыл бұрын
I personally....would never order from Amazon. Also....high end wig designers (like Jon Renau) have lace-fronts that are already designed to NOT be trimmed. Never trim a lace front like that. I am unsure what happened re how it fit you....it is possible you are a large or an average-large which would make Ignite hard to fit.

I live in the Pacific Northwest and normally have long silky blonde thick volume but fine texture hair that I have lost due to illness..I do not have enough hair left for a topper so I have been trying to order a wig that works for me...I want a human hair wig that looks natural... I have purchased 6 wigs all from 200.00 to 600.00 lace front lace and 360 lace...my issue is the wig is always too bulky in the back and is too big on my head...I have a small ear to ear measurment and a small front to nape measurment but an average circumfrance.. I have a thin angular face...I LOVE all of the information I have learned from you... what kind of cap would you reccomend for me...do I need a hand made wig? I want to order a full lace cap to see if that helps but I do not know of a reputable wig company... please reccommend some companies that are human hair that I can feel confident in receiving a product that even resembles the pictures... i normally would go to Seattle to a wig store and be fitted however due to Covid 19 I am resigned to ordering online...thank you for all of the information you give to us new to wigs community.. I have always had beautiful hair and did not realize just how much of my femininity and self confidence was tied to my hair...I appreciate any help you may be able to offer me..

Hope it’s ok for me to ask your advice. My measurements are: circumference 20.5. Ear to ear: 11. Hairline to nape: 11.5. Hairline to chin: 9. I can’t find a wig that looks real on me. Any suggestions are welcome. I am 70. If only I liked like you!

Is it okay to mess up the fibers even if you have a monofilament part? Some videos I've watched stress that you can change the hair parting. 🤔

Too good to be true is indeed it. The cheap wings I ordered took over two months to arrive after sitting in a Chinese airport for over a month. The cost to return these mistakes would have been more than their price. Buyer beware, but I'm all set for halloween.... Bet you can guess the site I ordered from .... W

Hi there, Enjoy your videos. I have a question about selling a wig, I think you mentioned that in a video. I bought a wig recently, wore it twice and really don't like it but can't send it back because I cut off the tag and missed the window of opportunity to send it back. Any advice?

What about when online companies post deceptive pictures of wigs? Then we get them and can't even comb them or no return? I read reviews over at paulas and many said the wigs don't even look near what is represented. I'm no slouch and have worked in hairstyling industry as a professional and a victim of deceptive pictures. Can't style them or no return???? You are now in a position to change that if you would. Also I'd love to see a vid on whisperlite wigs. I'd like to see a demo of any no-fuss wig. I'm not into primping for an hour or wearing clippies/hair bands, etc. I have a toni brattin and have to fool with it at every bathroom break(trendsetter with all the products). Frustrated.

have you ever had it feel too poofy in the back where you ended up removing wefts? I just spent quite a bit of money on two wigs. My husband and my family say they look good but I still feel like they are too poofy. When I press down on the back there is definitely a couple of inches between the wig and the top of my head. Is it supposed to fit like that?
@JillLynnBeautyTherapy3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. Do you mean the crown area? It does sound like it may be too large for you, and yes you can remove wefts to make it fit you better. It is so hard for me to say though...since I can't actually see you. ;) It isn't unusual to have a little room...but 2" is quite a bit.

Hi Jill, I need some advice on Kate by Noriko. WOW she is sooo tight. (Small Cap) which I have heard you talk about how small the caps run in this brand. I have tried to get her figured out and try some different techniques to get her to stay on. I am just not feeling comfortable with her yet. My question is....is there anything I can do to stretch out the cap?
@marilyngold56074 жыл бұрын
Hi Tammie, There's a great instructional video from Godiva's Secret Wigs on how to make your wig cap larger. I found it very helpful and easy to follow. Now I can wear my Noriko Jackson, a wig I love but would never have worn because it was so tight.

Jill, I have a brand new, never-worn, Jon Renau Ignite in Venice Blonde. It is too late to return it to the store. I took it to my hairdresser and asked her to cut my own hair just like it, because my own hair had grown way too long underneath an older wig I was wearing. My own hair had lost its highlights and was snow white...my natural color now. She did cut my own hair like the Ignite, and I haven’t worn a wig since. I have no need for the Blonde Ignite now, and I would love to sell it. I paid around $140 for it. Any suggestions? Never worn...in box with paper work.
