Lovely neat little engine installation! Nice one Ed. You're right, there is no need to be frightened of diesels. There is a lot less to go wrong- if it's got compression and its got fuel it'll run!

The engine that's in that mower is a kubota engine. Kubota makes and manufacturers their own diesel engines for their equipment. Some of the best diesel engines out there, too. You'll also find kubota diesels in other manufacturers' equipment , for example, Bobcat track loaders and excavators, etc.

I just had to subscribe! I have two old garden tractors, a mid 90s Cub Cadet 1440 with 2000+ hrs that has greasable lovejoy couplings on the driveshaft, it does the work around the house here. Also have a late 70s early 80s John Deere 317 that is getting a z482 like the one in this mower of yours except it is setup for generator use. It'll be my brush mowing tractor. God bless ya! Cheers from over here in the US!

It is weird seeing this is a diesel, I think people are always scared of a old diesel motors or equipment, they tend to be very expensive to be replaced. My boss from the early 90's had one of these petrol powered and it was like a sports car, fast and pretty powerful. From memory this brand was top dollar back then, not sure where they sit today. Watch out this one has the number of the beast.

That neutral lever might be for pushing the unit when the engine is off. That seat could be saved if you take the vinyl off and spray glue on some new vinyl... fairly easy to do and cheap. Nice rig, I'm sure it will make a nice mowing unit for year to come. I think there has got to be something to be done to tighten up that steering.

That engine is a Kubota Z482 Super Mini diesel. 479cc, 9kW. It's the smallest twin-cylinder they make. That particular mower would had been around US$7000 new back in the early '90s.
@bartbarnett28112 жыл бұрын
About a thousand hours is all you're going to get out of a lawn mower after that it's time for a major overhaul granted that engine is good for about 4 to 6,000 hours depending on how you run it. Should be raining at half throttle until fully warmed up and then a touchdown from wide open and engage the PTO before you runner up. The engine likes to have the load on it.
@OlegKostoglatov10 жыл бұрын
I think we need to clarify a few things, what you have there is termed a "Garden Tractor" in North America, the cheaper gas powered ones are simply riding mowers. The people who typically buy riding mowers are people who have a large lot to mow, and want to spend the bare minimum to do it without having to use a push mower. Garden tractors are usually bought by landscaping companies, people with acreages, or cities/school boards, they can have either a diesel engine or a multi cylinder gas engine.
@Aussie5010 жыл бұрын
that is a good way of putting it, the next models up even have 4 wheel steer and attachment points for scraper blades etc..

Nice machine, I would think that's a Kubota Diesel as why Kubota would put another company's diesel engine in a machine designed by Kubota. This is a nice find either way, I usually see the GR series (diesel engine, 2120) go for ten grand Canadian brand new and anywhere from $1000-2000 used. I looked up the specifications and it said it was a Kubota twin cylinder, but I don't know about the ones in Australia. I am personally leaning toward a Kubota GR garden tractor (diesel of course) or one of the BX series subcompact units as those have a lot of features and options, including the shaft drive everything that the T series no longer offers.

A query re. low fuel in tank.If there is sediment in a tank what difference does it make if the fuel level is high or low? It is always picking up through the same pipe which is usually fixed inside the tank close to the bottom ..Perhaps on a motor bike which jumps and bumps around it might throw around more but it all goes through the filter just the same. Any comments?
@Aussie5010 жыл бұрын
you make a good point!, the shop just said they accidentally ran it out of fuel and had to get the pump rebuilt because it pulled in crap, does not make sense considering how the system is set up. more like sombody put shit fuel in and clogged the system up. Diesel stuff does seem to be a bit rare in the US outside of trucking, shame really they are so strong!, Its a bit rough for a low hour unit, but the deck is easy to remove and can even be bought as a bare replacement part for a reasonable price!
@wildcoyote3410 жыл бұрын
diesel powered equipment is actually quite common in the us , but some stuff like smaller riding mowers like this one are not so common in diesel ,,however they are becoming more main stream ,and liquid cooled gas powered machines are also becoming more common along with EFI equipped gas powered machines the one thing I personally hate is the fact that most power equipment has a vertical shaft engine with belt drive ,, even some of the more expensive machinery , including commercial power equipment is belt drive even though hydrostatic driven ,,you have to get into much more expensive , heavy duty machinery to get shaft drive ,to both the transmission and mower deck ,, I work on power equipment for a living and I have seen a lot of changes in how stuff is built over the last 10 years ,,a lot of the cheap equipment for homeowners has gotten cheaper but the good quality stuff , like stuff built by Kubota and John Deere has gotten better ,, a lot of the compact utility tractors are 4x4 now too ,,I have a CUT that isn't much bigger than a standard riding mower ,, and it is Diesel powered ,,it has a 3 cylinder yanmar turbodiesel producing about 25hp ,, I do a lot of work on my family farm though so i need it and it costed a very pretty penny I paid just over $18,000 US for the tractor and several attachment brand new

That was a awesome deal! I payed for a plastic mover over 1500€ new and after a year it looked horrible, the steering was horrible (I could turn the wheel one turn around and the wheels didn't move at all) and the gearbox was destroyed. For 1000€ or 1500 AUD I would have been able to get this. It's even better than my granddad's mover. He got one of those Husqvarna movers for 5000€ and it died after two month because a screw of the gearbox came lose (Bad engineering, because the force of the belt was too strong and pullet the screw out). Thankfully they replaced it. I want a diesel mover is well. ^^ ~ iFriedi

Aussie50 Especially the big box store stuff. 2 grand for a pile of junk. I know someone who works for the local Deere dealer who said people bring the big box store junk in for repairs and they sometimes can't work on them because the machines are designed to run for a couple seasons and then fall apart with very little part support, just the basic oil and filter stuff. If you want something to last, I guess you have to buy commercial from the dealer directly. Of course you pay a lot more, but at least they can fix it and stuff lasts.
