Say hello to the all-new Toyota GR Yaris!
Well, we say all new - it’s actually just a mid-life facelift. However, there are so many changes that we think it may as well be an all-new car!
So let’s take a look around and see what’s different. For starters, there are several changes to the exterior. There’s an all-new bumper at the front of the car, with both the shape and design different to the previous version. There are also new vents flanking either side of it. Along the side, you get the same sloping roofline, and around the back, there’s a revised spoiler, while the fake diffuser has also been removed. The car is now also available in a new grey colour.
Ko
Step inside and the changes are a lot more noticeable, with the entire dash having had an overhaul! The analogue dials have been replaced with digital ones, now allowing the driver to see more information on the screen. The infotainment screen has also been lowered and repositioned to now face the driver, which not only makes it easier to use but also improves visibility! Driving mode and stability control buttons have been moved up on the centre console so they’re easier to access, and the seats up front have also been slightly lowered.
Under the bonnet, you’ll find the same 1.6-litre 3-cylinder turbo engine as before. However, the power output has been increased, with 261hp rising to 280hp, and 360Nm bumped up to 390Nm.
But that’s not all, the GR Yaris is no longer available with only manual transmission - you can now also get one as an automatic!
The question is, are all the changes enough to convince Mat to sell his Gen One GR and swap it for the all-new edition? You’ll need to watch this video and find out for yourself!

@@pauldavies7251 every car company can do this...they simply choose not to. They are willing to lose 10-20-30k(maybe) customers than develop such a car. It is a cost vs reward and you can bet all of your money no board of directors would ever approve this type of car in another automotive group. They simply want cars that brings them the best (actual) return on investment. A car like the GRY is a halo car at best, a passion project at worst. I will never be approved by a board of directors of any similar automotive brand like Toyota. (ffs, bmw killed their rwd 1-series years ago, although that was one of the most fun and cheap car of said brands to drive....so, if you cannot expect a company like bmw to care for the less wealthy fans/admirers/clients.., who you could count on doing such projects?, vw?, renault?.., the answer is no one, unfortunately.)

I'm a little disappointed in those times. Mat seems to be a little slow and uncoordinated and clunky on the upshifts. I can get through the upshifts in my GR quite a bit quicker and seemingly smoother. Quicker times on Dragy in the old model. PD get a 4.8 second 0-100 kmh time in the old manual. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eqrMcpqHrNaBjKc Also, I hoped Toyota would have increased the redline to 7,500rpm so that you only have one gear change to 100 kmh rather than having to make the more difficult 2nd to 3rd change at 96 kmh.

I may actually get this as my next car. I’ve always had a manual, but I’ll seriously consider the auto. I drive on the track occasionally, and as Matt points out, it would be great to only have to focus on corners and braking points without having to worry about shifting. The roads are getting noticeably busier in my area too, plus it means my partner can drive the car if ever necessary, since she can’t drive stick.

unless you're tracking for lap times, wouldn't a manual just make track days more fun? Also, teach her stick!

The amount of technical and mechanical changes are more akin to a new generation model rather than a mid-life refresh. The thoroughness of this update is Porsche-like (think 996 to 997, 991 to 992), so it's remarkable that a non-premium volume manufacturer has done this. Fair play Toyota. And this latest GR Yaris must be a candidate for being the finest performance hatch/saloon currently available.

Watching all the interior changes for visibility and ride height a few days after watching Matt review his own Yaris from years ago, they really addressed a lot of his complaints. Also, i love the explanation for having an auto transmission, sure it might mean more people buy it, but the notion of sharing the experience with people who only drive auto is kovely.

I first learnt to drive manual in 2001 in a Toyota Echo/Yaris/Vitz.... After some spirited driving as a young chap around the mountain roads I flipped the car and rolled down the side of the mountain and eventually stopped finding myself pinned to a tree, I walked out from the yaris without a scratch. After that I cycled through many sporty Euro and Japanese cars but found my way back to a Yaris GR and wow how times have changed, you get a lot of car in a small package. P.S the horrendous body roll that the Yaris was typically known for back in the day is no longer haha.
