This is such a great channel! I love HK, I lived in Shenzhen for a year, and took the KCR a lot to visit Hong Kong. Great to see what's new on the MTR!

Hopefully another museum will be built to accommodate the other old trains, it should also hold many of Hong Kong’s old buses, which were preserved by bus companies and a number of transit enthusiasts currently.

Unlikely, given the fact that MTR is trying to erase the traces of ex KCR lines. Personally though, I prefer the MTR livery because it is more modern and not as boring.

@@squidgame2021 R stock livery looks to bland and not vibrant like KCR.Livery
@squidgame20212 жыл бұрын
@@TanVasinTrains Perhaps the LRV (phase 1, 2 before refurb and phase 4, 5) have vibrant liveries but I wouldn't call any other MTR livery vibrant. In fact, most are quite dull. Everyone has their own colour preferences, but you can't call R/ TML C/ S train liveries bland when the train when most HKers and esp tourists think of 'MTR train' are M trains. My personal opinion is that the black rectangle with rounded corners covering a window AND door makes it more interesting than just having a single pattern along most of the train (eg TCL) or different colours for windows and doors (KCR). And I take back my vibrant livery statement with the R train's yellow first class doors.

How can the platforms accommodate the increase in body width?
@hiddenhongkong3 жыл бұрын
The platforms were not made for the current rolling stock, they are made for all trains on the East Rail Line, including the intercity trains. Because of this, the platform gap is large enough to accommodate wider bodies.

Therefore, please be careful while boarding and existing MTR trains on the East Rail Line.

How will the shorter trains affect capacity?
@hiddenhongkong3 жыл бұрын
The shorter trains will significantly impact capacity, and many have raised concern since the East Rail Line can get very crowded even with 12 cars. However, the MTR thinks that the opening of the Tuen Ma Line will be able to mitigate this. I don't think that that will be enough, but we'll have to wait and watch.
@thegreypenguin50973 жыл бұрын
@@hiddenhongkong thanks for the response! I was sceptical as well, shorter trains is never a good idea, unless they increase frequency
@hiddenhongkong3 жыл бұрын
Hopefully the frequency will be improved after the switch to the new "Traingaurd MT CBTC" signalling system
@squidgame20212 жыл бұрын
@@thegreypenguin5097 The best way to compare train capacity and frequency is to look at passengers per direction per hour. The EAL when it was fully 12 car trains had a capacity of 58,500 people per hour, with the busiest section carrying 58,000 people from Tai Wai to Kowloon Tong in an hour within the morning peak. As of the time of writing the EAL can only carry 45,000 passengers per hour with 33 R trains. The busiest section is now Sha Tin to Tai Wai with 37,000 people in an hour of morning peak, due to the Tuen Ma Line's diversion. This will increase to roughly 58,000 people per hour per direction once all 43 R trains are in service. Capacity shall not be too much of an issue as long as existing Tuen Ma Line users who go to east HK Island do not switch back to the East Rail Line, something that could happen if changing at Admiralty is more convenient than Diamond Hill-Yau Tong-Quarry Bay.
@Polyglot06132 жыл бұрын
@@squidgame2021 I think it is counterintuitive to shorten each train set from 12 cars to 9 cars solely due to space constraints at the Hung Hom, Exhibition Centre, and Admiralty stations, when the rest of the East Rail Line's infrastructure had been built to accommodate 12-car trains. It seems to me a waste of space and capacity at the other 14 stations between Mong Kok East and Lo Wu/Lok Ma Chau. The MTR should consider restoring some (but not all) of the 37 sets of R-train on the East Rail Line to 12 cars, which is absolutely achievable as long as the following can be implemented: (1) Immediately build out and incorporate the additional 10-car reserve space at the Hung Hom, Exhibition Centre, and Admiralty stations as part of those stations' platform area. (2) Have MTR staff manually cordon off the 1st and 12th cars of each 12-car train that is bound for Admiralty at Mong Kok East to prevent passengers from occupying those two train cars at Hung Hom, Exhibition Centre, and Admiralty stations such as to not delay boarding/alighting times at those 3 stations. (3) Since the platforms at Hung Hom, Exhibition Centre, and Admiralty stations would be able to accommodate 10-car trains, the 1st and 12th cars of each 12-car train can remain in the tunnel, while the middle 10 cars can stop at the platforms of those three stations as usual. (4) Once the 12-car train reverses at Admiralty to head back towards Sheng Shui, MTR staff can lift the cordon at the 1st and 12th cars and allow North-bound passengers to occupy those cars. I am also aware that the MTR is looking to purchase an additional 6 sets of R-trains from ROTEM. Instead of ordering those 6 sets of R-trains, I recommend MTR order them as intermediary 3-car consists (6 train sets x 9 cars = 54 cars in total, or 18 three-car intermediary consists). Using the 18 three-car intermediary consists, MTR can convert 18 of the existing 37 sets of R-trains into 12-car trains, while the remaining 19 sets of R-train can remain as 9-car trains. I think this offers greater flexibility in terms of when 9-car and 12-car trains can be deployed depending on the time of the day.
