New Triumph Bonneville T120 motorcycle

This is about my new 2023 Triumph Bonneville motorcycle and why I chose this bike over all the others that are available. I couldn't be happier with my purchase. It's a very solid bike with a high build quality. it has plenty of power and is very relaxed and comfortable to ride, just a very easy bike to ride.

I'm 6'4" and I love the low center of gravity on these Triumphs. I thought about buying an "adventure bike" but thank God I didn't. I like the smoothness of the Bonneville. Hard to beat. I like the blue on this bike of yours. Concerning electronics, mine doesn't have ABS and I've just become accustomed to sliding and losing traction in certain scenarios. I go out and fool around with braking to get it the rear to lock up and I'm fairly comfortable with some level of brake lock up now. It reminds me of the bike I had as a kid. Just a motorcycle with no technology. Love it.

Well done Greg, you have ticked so many boxes that us 'older' riders are having to reconcile. I totally agree with everything you said, I owned a GS and then a Tiger 1200. Great bikes, but not very engaging. I now have a Bonneville T120 Black and absolutely love it. It does everything you need but with style.

Thank you. Still loving this bike and I don't wish for anything else. It's a pleasure to ride. I di buy some new tires for it, but I haven't mounted them yet. The stock tires are not great, many have complained about them. When I get the new tires mounted I'll see if they where right about that.

I have the exact same bike and color, bought this April. I've had several Triumphs, bought my first one 60 years ago, picked it up in London. Have had other Japanese bikes as well, but the Bonneville always touched my heart. Didn't even look at the Harleys and "insect" ADV bikes. Sold a Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 to buy it, no comparison in my mind. Like you, I love the Aegean Blue, my dealer hasn't gotten another one since. (Or even another T120). Nice video, thanks.

I too put a centerstand on my new T120 but you really need to add the grab rail behind the seat to put it on the centerstand.

I use the panier rack near the shock to help lift it. I step on the stand and lift at the same time and it pops right up.

Your video sounds just like my reasons for buying a T120! I bought mine new in 2021 as a new leftover 2020 and it came stock with heated grips, a center stand, chrome seat rails and a radiator guard but no cruise control which I added within the first year of ownership. I’ve also put on the Madstad quick removable windshield for cool weather riding plus a couple thousand dollars of accessories. 3500 miles to date and though I’m not riding as much as I’d like to I’m totally devoted to this brand, I hope to do a bit more riding in the future. Wind pressure can be an issue for some on any naked bike. I have installed a Madstad windshield on mine since this review and it has made it much more pleasurable to ride for long periods or on the highway. I don't ride highways a lot as I prefer surface streets and backroads for a more relaxed riding experience. Wind and motorcycles go hand in hand, lol. Isn't that why we ride? I installed the windshield mostly for protection from flying debris like rocks and bugs. Bottom line is I really enjoy this bike just for the sheer pleasure of the ride. It is a wonderful machine and a joy to ride.

The tube tires haven't been an issue yet but finding a different brand of tire has proven to be a challenge. There just is not a lot of choices available in the odd sizes of the t120. Avons used to be the upgrade choice but they are basicly unavailable. They are now coming with michelin tires on them rather than the crappy pirellis. But I am really enjoying the bike, I have a 200 mile ride planned for the weekend.

For me it needs to be a little bit bigger, but it's a beautiful machine. I'll probably go for the Scrambler XC for the height. By the way it's made in Thailand, not Taiwan.

My 2006 Bonneville was made at Hinckley England. They moved assembly to Thailand not long after. The new Rocket 3 TFC and all Rocket 3 engines are currently built in England. Along with the Tiger 900 and 1200 models. I now ride a Triumph Thunderbird 1600cc. They were all built in England

Congratulations on a great choice! I've really enjoyed my 2016 T120, the first sold in the state. Interesting to see your black valve cover. Mine was originally chrome, but I thought it was just too blingy and replaced it with black, like yours. It came with a standard center stand and low grab bar. These are righteous items and very useful, but they're heavy. Heated grips were standard, too. I had never had these before but was spoiled on the first ride! I installed a TEC Bike Parts X-pipe myself, and my mods were done. Great machine!

@@woodtickgreg6926 Found the original Pirelli Phantom Sports Comp tires to offer very nice handling on the straights and in the wet, but they felt a bit vague in the corners. Avon Roadrunner II tires in the OE sizes really sharpened up handling.

beautiful bike! i own an aprilia rs660 but want to get the bonneville t120 as a second bike :) my granddad used to drive a horex and i really really love the style of those bikes. and of course, triumph quality is just awesome. had a daytona 675 some years a go and was impressed by the quality.

Thank you for the compliments. After a full season of riding it I'm still in love with it, I have no regrets. It's very smooth, tourqey and comfortable, an absolute joy to ride. Being an older rider it suits me just fine. It is exactly what I wanted in a motorcycle, simple. I love the standard styling and the low seat height. The only negative I have had on the bike is the seat gets uncomfortable after about a 100 miles. I have since upgraded to the triumph king and queen comfort seat, we'll see how that is in the next riding season. Its winter here and the bike is put up for the winter.

Man I'm having a blast on this bike. I even did a tour on it. Mounted a removable top box and another bag over the passenger seat and took off. It's great on the highway, 75mph and it only turns 3k rpm. Love this bike around town, so easy to ride. And that torque!

I agree with you on its nimbleness, it handles really good. I am in love with it still. But I do want to upgrade the tires. Mine came with the pirellis and I agree with everyone that they are crap. Hopefully yours came with the michelins and it will handle even better than mine.

Hi Greg, great looking T120 and it's a style of bike that won't age. I have the speed twin 1200 and yes the torque on the speed twin is exhilarating. But, on longer journeys 150+miles I found that I would have preferred a more upright riding position like the T120 and cruise control would be helpful too. Going to make a few changes to my bike for next season, handle bar risers and rear rack and may be a replacement seat. Unfortunately, I cant fit the rear rack unless I change stock blinkers for smaller ones. I was considering the T120 but went for the speed twin. Still happy with my bike! It's great for city riding, but some of the things on the T120 I would now appreciate for my longer rides. Good video, Greg.

The upright riding position was a must for me as well as the cruise control. I considered the speed twin also but the bonneville won in the end and I have no regrets, couldn't be happier with the bike. I have also added a rear rack and a removable Madstad windshield to the bike. The style of the bike is exactly what I wanted to get back to the basics of motorcycling. Maybe look at a couple of my other videos for some ideas? Is cruise controll an option on the speed twin?

It's much more enjoyable to ride, it feels so much lighter. Even though some folks think it's a heavy bike I don't find that to be the case at all. The weight it does cary gives it a very planted feel. I installed a windshield on it and that really improved the highway experience as it keeps the wind force off of my body and doesn't buffet my helmet. At 70 mph on the highway it's only turning 3,000 rpm. If I was to point out one negative on the bike it's the front fork springs, they are soft and it dives under braking. But that's an easy and not real expensive fix, I'll upgrade the front springs to progressive ones in the future. There is no perfect bike I don't think, I have changed things on every bike I've owned, lol. But I'm very happy with this bike.

I bought a T120 in July 2016, "Cinder Red" in color, a real beautiful bike. I traded in my 2001 Kawasaki W650 for it - you know, the bike that was a better Bonneville than the Triumph version of the Bonnie in 2001. In fact I had chosen the 'W' over the Triumph back then for several reasons, including the fact that the 'W' had a centerstand and the Triumph didn't! It seemed that Triumph was just playing cheap with their Bonnies back then, while Kawasaki didn't hold back. A gorgeous enjoyable bike, I had planned to keep it forever. Until Triumph re-released the Bonnie in 2016, that is. Triumph went back to the drawing board, and the result was fantastic. The new Bonnies in 2016 even had a centerstand standard! And heated grips, a passenger grab rail and chrome valve covers. Then in 2021 ( I think? ) they started making Bonnies without the centerstand and all the rest, in a move to cut costs I think. They did add cruise control and alloy wheels, however. And the Brembo brakes. That's pretty nice! I still have my Bonnie, now with 20,000 miles on it and I love it still. I took it on a long road trip last summer, Seattle to Sedona and back. It performed flawlessly. Even had a pillion rider for the trip back. For her I added the Triumph backrest/rack combo. I also added cruise control. Many hot hot days riding across Arizona Utah Nevada and eastern Oregon; my Bonnie just cruised along. Fantastic bike. Enjoy yours!

It's a Madstad brand. I ordered it direct from them. Call them and they will tell you how to measure for the proper size for you. I also did a video on how to install the windshield.

hi from the UK i have a 2016 T120 just came back from a ride and i remembered you saying about the bars maybe changing or putting in risers well on my bike there was a cable routing mod to the headstock area which my bike had the mod fitted to alleviate clutch cable rubbing but also i feel to compensate for a lack of cable length in that area to allow full lock to lock turn on the handle bars now i know yours is a later model and i know the rectifier position under the headlamp was changed but be careful to allow sufficient slack in the harness ; lucky for me i brought mine from a main dealer over 2 years ago And 2 weeks into ownership a fault was diagnosed with the main wiring harness, starting indicators , and it needed a complete new harness i dread to think how much that would have cost . since then i now have nearly 16,000 miles on the clock with no issues especially since i fitted Meltzer roadtec 01 tyres/tires front and back enjoy your bike

Thanks for the advise it's much appreciated. I haven't done the risers yet but probably will this season, there's snow on the ground here still so spring hasn't sprung yet. I did just get some new Bridgestone batlax tires for it, still need to get those mounted. I'm also thinking of doing progressive springs in the front so I'd do the risers at that time. The bike has been a dream and I'm still in love with it. It's perfect for me. Stay safe and enjoy the ride.

I love the color. I am waiting for my T120 to arrive at my dealer. I am getting the DGR edition. Haven’t ridden a T120 though. I have an ‘18 Street Triple which is my dream bike. I also have a ‘21 HD Sport Glide. I’m adding the T120 to my “stable”. I love the look of it and the fact there is only 250 of that version world wide and only 50 for the states.

Mike here, I just received my DGR T-120, I’m in the San Francisco area, where are you located? My dealership told me that I will receive my certificate in the mail, which will include the DGR number, same for you? Apparently one can see the DGR number in the vin number,

I've got one too, 2018 T120, I love it but one shortcoming is the Trans, the shift selector failed at about 17k miles. A $700 repair. Was stuck in 6th gear. After repair it runs beautifully.

Yeah I heard some of the early units had a shift problem. I hope that doesn't happen to mine. It shifts like butter now. One of the smoothest shifting bikes I've ever had. But I'd fix it even if that did happen because I do love the bike.

Great video -- I'm struggling with choosing between a T120 and a Speed Twin, and this detailed overview was helpful to try and steer me toward the bike that I know would be the better choice for me (but that sportier look and enhanced torque of the Speed Twin keeps swaying my opinion in some sort of knee-jerk Pavlov response). Aesthetically, I like the more classic retro look and brushed stainless engine of the T120, and I read that the T120 is a bit larger, which as a 6'1" rider would be welcome. I already have a roadster (BMW R1250R), so another such bike like the Speed Twin seems redundant as well.

Thanks for the kind words. I guess in reality you really have to look at what your main use of the bike would be. For me I needed something that I could add luggage to or remove as needed. I don't think you can get a center stand for the speed twin either and that was a deal breaker for me. If you could arrange a test ride on a T120 bonnevile I think you just might be impressed with the torque it has. It still impresses me. I generally ride it around 2000 to 2500 rpm and just a twist of your wrist and your right in the torque curve of the motor, most enjoyable.

These bags are Burley brand bags. If you shop around on the net you can get a pretty good deal on them. I can't remember where I purchased mine, maybe revzilla. I also did a video on how to wax the bags for even more water protection than what they came with.

I really love the blue and white colors on your T-120. Personally, I prefer the Speed Master because of the feet forward position. I am 70 years old, but I also like to sit erect when I ride and I would put either 12" or 14" high rise handlebars on my bike. Currently I am riding a Can-Am Spyder RT Limited and I am not satisfied with all the technical stuff BRP put on the trike. I can't check the oil before starting a ride. I have to ride 10 miles down the road, stop the trike on a flat surface, let it idle for 10 minutes and then check the oil. If I had known all the picky things like that before I got the trike I probably wouldn't have gotten it. TCRS - Take Care, Ride Safe.

Thank you, I really am happy with the color too. The speed master is a nice bike, it was on my short list but I just didn't want another cruiser. But having said that it is a beautiful bike. Yeah so now you understand why I didn't want a bike with all that technical stuff, it's just a basic bike for me and I'm very happy with it. The speed twin is another great standard, has a little more hp than the standard T120 but it had the upswept exhaust and that doesn't work for me with saddle bags or panniers. And you can't get a center stand for it, that's another deal breaker for me. TCRS!

Ah...that's a beauty. I have a 2013 t100 Bonneville and I would love to have a bit more power. But I was looking at getting a Vespa just to get around town. But then I found my little Bonneville and it feels like a scooter to me now. It's flickable and fun. I took the windscreen off because I like to feel the wind and it's just been the best cheapest mental therapy for me this summer and now into October still great weather for riding. I do at least an hour of riding every work day at lunch. I was surprised to hear you get over 50mpg. Mine is an 865 and gets 43mpg. But I drive mine aggressively so maybe that's the difference.

I got 57 mpg on my last ride of 267 miles so I think I'm doing pretty good for mpg. I just love riding this bike and I try and get out on it every weekend for a ride even if it's only 80 to 100 miles. It's mental therapy for me too. I love the torque of the T120. I won't ride mine to work just because I won't leave it un attended, I don't trust people where I work. But if I had a Vespa I might, lol. I dig Vestas. Be safe out there and enjoy your ride.

I'm still in love with it, lol. Overall it is a very easy bike to ride and very enjoyable. Some bikes I've had in the past where more work to ride, this one is very relaxed. I have put the madstad windshield on the bike and that was a big improvement too. One thing I do need to change on the bike is the seat, it gets pretty uncomfortable after about 100 miles. I hear the triumph king and queen seat is much better and it's not ridiculous in price and is a direct fit upgrade. Other than the seat it's a great bike! I might change the fork springs to progressive springs at some point, that would reduce diving under hard braking. But that's more of a personal thing and not absolutely necessity it's more of a making the bike mine kind of upgrade. I've also added a rear rack and a couple other accessories, I've made some videos on the things I've added to the bike so far. Congratulations on getting a DGR bike! I'll do the dgr ride again here in Detroit next year, it was a lot of fun.

Yes you are right, Thailand, slip of the tongue. The bags are burley brand bags, they are waxed canvas. And I waxed them again before I installed them. I did a video on how to wax the bags. The bags are a good size for daily use. If I go on a trip I have a top box I can put on and a bag that goes across the rear of the seat. The bike handles well with it all kitted out for touring.

Nice looking bike. I have been looking at these, but have not sat on one since nobody except for a dealer 200 miles away has one. I am tall and afraid I would look like I am riding a mini bike

Yeah you should really sit on one. The bench seat may work for you as you can slide back on it. The bike is really nice to ride. It truly is a gentleman's hot rod. I just love the torque and riding position of the bike.

I step down on the centerstand and pull up on the panier racks at the same time. Pops right up. She is heavy though.

Funny, I don’t remember you calling me for my opinion, but clearly you did, as everything you are saying I have been saying. You mentioned a quick release screen. . .I have a very small screen but would like to have a larger one for touring. The bike came with the Triumph Touring screen. . .A big pain to put on and take off. What quick release screen are you looking at? I had a K1600 GTL. . .800 lbs. . So dumb. . .I can walk this up onto the bike lift. . .just completely livable. My only issue is the seat is just painful after 75 miles. I’ve ordered a Russell Day Long that will be here before fall. Well worth the cost from my previous experience. Other things I’ve done: I changed the mirrors for bar end. It looks cool. . .but more than that, I just couldn’t see around my shoulders with the standard mirrors. LOVE the bar end mirrors. I can see both sides of the bike behind from BOTH mirrors. . .amazing. Center stand is great. Engine guards are important. My wife dropped her T120 black in the garage and it broke the front brake handle and the turn signal. . .she has engine guards, so I was glad they were there. Soft luggage is great for dropping a bike on!! No damage at all. The triumph engine guards are not huge or offensive. Well worth it. I have the Triumph rear rack and the Triumph backrest (thank you original owner). I bought it with 9K miles. Barely broken in. Bought my wife’s with 1000 miles. Future investments might be bar risers. . .I’m 5’8”. . .also twist your rear shocks up to “2”or “3”. Makes a big difference when you have weight, but doesn’t really stiffen the ride when it is just you. . . Next might be to take out the cat. . .I do think it is a bit quiet. . .but I want to keep the pea shooters. Thanks for the vid. We seem to be on the same page. Keep doing vids as you get more used to the bike.

I've done a couple more videos since this one. I don't mind the micky mouse mirrors, they are vibration free and I can see with them just fine. Engine bars are on, so is the rear rack. Yeah the seat needs an upgrade. I've put a madstad windshield on, it only takes seconds to remove and put back on. It's very adjustable and wind buffeting is non exsistant. I can look over the top of the screen. Just did a 300 mile ride and the windshield was plastered with bugs, only a couple on the top of my helmet. Loving the bike!

I am just like you, I rode motorcycles before I legally was driving cars. I am 70 so I remember the Triumphs and BSA from the past, although I could never afford one. I had Hondas back then. Over the years I've owned many, mostly Japanese and four Harleys(never again). I want a Triumph Bonneville bad and I've been looking at the T100 because I'm a tightwad. But the T100 has black rims and polished pipes which I don't like. Yours has shiney rims and chrome pipes and looks good. Is yours a special T120 or something? Or do all T120 come which the shiney rims and chrome pipes? It looks great, I WANT ONE. Thanks for the video.

No mine is not a special edition, it is a standard. It has alloy rims and the stock chromed pipes. I think it just looks good on this style of motorcycle. But looks are subjective to each individual. I have added some accessories to the bike since I got it but tried not to take away from the classic look of the bike to much. You have to make a bike your own I think.

@@woodtickgreg6926 I want a Bonneville real bad. The T100 is plenty of power and a five speed gear box is fine with me. But your bike looks so much better with the alloy wheels and chrome pipes I guess I'll have to spend a little more and buy a T120.

Beautiful bike. I can't decide between a Triumph T120 or a Kawasaki Z900RS. IMO, they both look great. The T120 wins in the engine department with its torquey 1200cc vertical twin. The Z900RS makes more power and sounds great but I don't really want a high rpm inline four. But the Z900RS has better suspension, a more comfortable seat, and I'm also not really a fan of the wire spoke wheels on the Bonneville. Tough choice.

All things that I considered when I was looking at bikes. I can say this, the T120 is very easy to ride and there is no perfect bike. I really dig the torque of the T120. I'll upgrade the seat at some point but I think I do that on most bikes that I've had. Suspension is also easy to upgrade, only thing I think the Bonnie needs is progressive springs in the fork, a cheap upgrade. I definitely did not want a high rpm bike. The Bonnie suits me in that area. Spoke wheels? I can take them or leave them, they don't really bother me. What I do really like about the T120 is how small it feels when I'm on it, flat-footed at a stop with my legs bent. It's easy to move around too. I have no regrets with my decision. Had it's 600 mile service today. Going on a touring vacation with it in a couple of weeks, just taking off for 4 days to I don't know where. Just me and the bike and the road, I'm staying off the highways..........

But mine came with factory cruise controll. Strange trade offs it seems. But I'm really happy with the bike even though I paid for the heated grips and centerstand. I do think the center stand should be standard on the bikes.
