My experience mirrors yours.. My first "Truck specific" GPS was a 465T. LOVED it until it died. Gave RM a shot with the 720. It was OK until it died. After that I said NO MORE unless I buy with points. So now I have a Overdryve 8 (P.O.S.) AND a 785. Run them side by side to compare algorithms/routes. Both units bought with points. My Wife and I drive team so points add up fast. I am new to your channel. So far, I like it. I'm waiting for your review on the 10" Garmin before I use up 80,000 points.

@@Dsmgreg925 Yes. Absolutely. I agree with Clutch, always check against an Atlas. That app tried to turn me onto a bicycle path once. I could clearly see it was a bike path, with grass on both sides, and a hairpin left around a telephone pole. The actual road was the next block up. Always use visual acuity and common sense, but all in all, is been a real good alternative to spending hundreds of dollars on standalone units. I forget how much it costs. It's a subscription model and I bought the 3 year plan. It's constantly being updated and it's much better now than when I first got it.

I just bought the brand new rand mcnally overdryve 8 pro 2, i hope it last as long ad yours without no problems.. i bought mine from there actual rand mcnally website for what its worth.. i recommend people dont leave there gps in there windshield that magnifies the heat, get a case for your gps so when you drop it has protection, dont leave your gps in your truck in the summertime it will over heat, dont leave your gps charging 24/7 the battery will over heat and so will the motherboard and burn up the internals thats why i feel so many people complain it doesn't last a year and the screen goes completely black and wont turn back on.. im no expert but lets face it i know these truckers aren't taking care of there shit they drop them constantly always have it on the charger and leave it in direct sunlight... again im no expert but im gunna use common sense and take care of it and hope it takes care of me..

@@cryptonator1988 Good point on the sun. I Have a 2018 Cascadia. I mounted mine just above (& a littte right) of the air slide/air bags switches. Completely out of the sun and doesn’t obstruct my view. That said, I leave mine plugged in constantly. I do turn it off at night & remove it from the base. This is mainly because I also have a 12.9” iPad mounted just above the air breaks. (Vertical).While driving I use it for traffic(Google maps) & to see the details of the area using the satellite images. Weather/SiriusXM/Pandora/etc. When not driving I turn it Horizontally and watch Hulu/Netflix/KZbin/ etc. I take the Rand McNally off the base to allow space for the iPad This can be accomplished by using Steelie magnets & super glue or any other type of magnet system. I have 3 steelie magnets on Both of my iPads and they have never caused any damage to the iPads

Just a little little little reference, I’ve been been doing this for a little over 47 years (trucking). In this time I’ve used about all of the gps’s out there at least once. I agree that Garmin is good up to a point. In all states with lane restrictions (Samantha) the voice I use tries to get you in the ticket lanes, and in big cities like LA she tries to not only get you in the ticket lanes, but wants you to drive in the express lane. I’ve also noticed that Garmin will tell you to be in the left lane of the freeway when you actually need to be in the right lanes. This seems to happen in a lot of big cities. I’ve found if I hook up my tablet to google maps, they are more accurate and efficient, plus they report speed traps and accidents. By the way I don’t live to far from you. I live in Baggs, Wyoming

Hello fellow wyomingite! All that you stated is true. I think rand is better about the problems you mentioned. But they just don’t last. That, and the ease of use with the voice command is why I stick with Garmin. I know the rand 730 I used to have constantly wanted me to make I turns. Unreal. None are perfect, I mainly like it for the trip planning. But like you, use google, or paper maps or something else as a tool to really pinpoint a place. Thanks so much for commenting

I have a Garmin and I am NOT impressed with their map updating function. I have contacted them about certain roads/areas not being correct but they are slow to react and change anything. I DO like the "traffic" function on the Garmin that when paired with a smart phone (via their app) will give you some advance warning about delays ahead on your route. But even then you have to manually reset that function every so often, at least every hour,...and it is still dependent on what your phone and Google maps have picked up. Rand doesn't have such a function in their app....yet.

I've had the Rand McNally RND 7720 since about the time it came out. I've liked the Wifi feature and have generally had a good experience with it. Unfortunately it stopped getting map updates. The Dock kept telling me that my maps were up to date, yet the unit said the maps were over a year old. Getting an answer from the customer service people is about impossible. Since I've always had good luck with my Garmin units in my car I decided to give them a try. I just received my Dezi 785 yesterday. I want the dashcam and figure it's easier to have everything in one unit. I powered it up, downloaded the latest map updates, and then downloaded all of my "Saved Places" from my other Garmin. 15 minutes and I'm ready to hit the road with my new tool, and yes, as much as I like the electronic toys, I still carry an Atlas wherever I go.

I’m curious because you said all these gps and dash cam units are crapping out on you, where do you have them mounted?? The reason I ask is because I had a RM gps and it did similar things. I had mine attached lower on the windshield, close to the dash. I “think “ the problem mounting them there is that they get a lot of the heat from the sun (think ants in a magnifying glass) not to mention heat from the engine as well. When I got my garmin I attached it at the top of my windshield where it’s somewhat protected by the truck’s visor and I haven’t had any problems. Just a thought.
@ClutchTrucker
@ClutchTrucker 3 жыл бұрын
I too keep it low on the dash, actually sitting on my dash shelf, so it can’t fall. The heat could’ve been an issue with the rand, but almost three years, and that doesn’t seem to be an issue with Garmin

I got a rand McNally Its somewhat old and small I wanna say a 730??... but anyways, I bought it from another trucker 6 years ago for $30 dollars used and still running strong. I've never updated it (afraid it'll blow up. Lol) and I know what your talking about when the screen goes purple or black and white and then makes a sound and dies. Welp, thats happened many times over the years and all I've done is hold the power button for minutes ( i think I did it for 10 minutes one time and it eventually comes back on🤷‍♂️) weird, I know but she's still alive and kicking and I've been OTR for the past 6 years averaging about 4 days hometime a month👍. That being said I had a new Garmin brand new out of the box a couple years ago and died 1 year later. But that being said I had it mounted against windshield at very top and it took a lot of hits on the dash when it decided it didn't want to stick anymore. So that could've been a problem. Lol. But I found i liked the Rand Features better. I wasn't impressed with the Garmin routing and features

I had to send my 740 RM back to get fixed. They didn’t send me a replacement while I wait for this unit to get fixed. Doesn’t charge on square charger. So I bought a Garmin. 780. Only $250 on factory outlet. Only thing I can’t figure out is how to enter long and latitude like on RM. their “coordinates” option is not working. Any suggestions? I like Garmin so far

I have the complete opposite opinion on the Garmin vs Rand Mcnally, I find the Rand much easier to use than the Garmin. And the Garmin lacks important info on the home screen. The big problem with the Rand, and from what I've seen and heard, they are not built to last. I tell people mine is 4 or 5 years old, they don't believe me. I've come to trust the Qualcomm's navigation more than the Garmin or the Rand Mcnally. I know most drivers haven't had good luck with the Navigo gps, but the company I work for seems to make sure they are always updated.

This video has been out for awhile, sorry I'm a little late to the game. I have the TND80. On the pro side, I find it easy to use, especially when finding the next rest area or a specific brand of truck stop. I've used Garmins and while it will tell you were the next rest area is, it won't tell you what side of the freeway it's on. RM will tell you WB or EB (or NB or SB), Garmin doesn't. It also will show you all the upcoming truck stops, but I don't think you can tell it to find the next T/A or Petro or Flying J -- just truck stops in general. On the con side, and it's a big one, besides freezing, it will lose track of where I am. It will work great for the first four hours of the day, then it will put my location as being next to the freeway or in a neighborhood nearby. It's usually about 150' feet away from where I am. Talking to RM customer service is like talking to a brick wall. I guess I'll truck the new Garmin OTR800 next.
@ClutchTrucker
@ClutchTrucker 3 жыл бұрын
It’s too bad the two companies couldn’t get together because ran McNally you’re right is better about locations especially truckstops and rest areas but Gorman is much better about staying on track not freezing up and not crashing and it’s easier to use in a little more intuitive I wish both of them would get together and make one awesome unit

Well i just bought the brand new rand mcnally overdryve 8 pro 2 nobody had done a review on it and i notice most people buy there gps from truck stops and thats the pattern ive noticed with all the issues people have with them.. i bought my rand mcnally from the actual rand mcnally store so hopefully i dont have any issues with it.. are people dropping there gps often that could mess up the internals do they always have it charging that could mese up the battery and make the motherboard over heat and cause then too freeze or black screen, do you leave you gps in your window the window magnifies heat, do you leave your gps in the summertime in your truck well we all know hot the trucks get inside them in summertime too me you have too take care of your units use common sense take your gps home and keep it out of direct heat. Once yout gps is charged unplug it and when it gets too 50% plug it back in till its fully changed.. get a case for your gps unit too protect it.. dont use in direct sunlight like in your winsheild.. i know because i use too use a tablet system at schneider and accidentally leave it on the dash and that thing would over heat and have all kinds of issues when i took it off the dash it ran fine so idk im hoping i dont have any issues with my new rand mcnally..

I have had one good garmin. All other brands are trash. But truthfully, the garmin I have now pisses me off on a daily basis. Taking me off route sometimes only to do a u-turn . Always having me go around the block upon arrival and sometimes when starting out. Taking me miles out of my way for fuel stops, adding 70 miles to the average 3 to 5 hundred mile trips. I have to watch it like a hawk. Unfortunately, garbage is the only option for a GPS here in 2020. I think the best option is to use a smart phone with a dash holder. And just watch for low bridges. I have to use my phone ultimately anyway just to find many addresses - with my garmin.

I ran the TND 510 for 8 years. It worked well enough but you had to pay attention and stay a turn or two ahead of it because it would occasionally recalculate to a restricted route or freeze/restart at a critical moment. The last update Rand McNally sent for it bricked it so I burned points and grabbed the 540. It took a minute to figure out but it was way better than the 510, with a couple exceptions. I unfortunately dropped it last Friday while packing up to head for the house. Turned it on intending to update it when I got home but the screen was messed up so I grabbed the 550 (300 cash) about 5 hours ago. It's not intuitive at all and I'm ready to fix it with my hammer. I absolutely hate it! I'm crossing my fingers and expediting another 540. If it doesn't last at least 3 years I'm giving Garmin a shot!

@@ClutchTrucker no sir I paid around 300 buck for the whole set up . Plug them in to a 12 volt one camera for left / right of windshield . An two mini cameras you can put on the out side Mirror bracket face back so it picks up everything from behind Basically everything you see in your mirrors on the right and left side the cameras are on record as far as whether i’ve learned but a little rain X on the lands and wipe it off like you would your windshield ice won’t build up on it or rain and it records and holds up pretty good in the camera system you can set up and bust in 15 minutes pretty simple set up and record up on different time links depends on what kind of memory card you put in them you get your 30 GB memory card and you can write it for weeks all day long it’s got different setting moves on it it’ll record everything and anything it’s motion censored so if you’re gonna start taking a shower do you want to camera to record somebody’s doing something around your truck or it may get hit or something like this it recorded is motion detected for less than 300 bucks I’ve had mine for about for five years now still holding up. And for the outside cameras some zip ties for the cords going up around the bracket Belco or used tire straps for the cameras pointing back in the location you set them at and you’re good to go you can take the system in and out of any truck you want check it out it’s pretty cool system save my butt more a few times so far.
