New Tube for London

New Tube for London, also known as the Deep Tube Upgrade Programme, is a programme to introduce 250 new trains and signalling on several London Underground deep-tube lines between 2023 and 2033. The fully automated trains will increase capacity on the Piccadilly, Central, Waterloo & City and Bakerloo lines.

The 1992 stock are modern like the 1995 and 96 stocks, but they're getting replaced because the central line needs other trains that have much better reliability than the 92 stocks. However, a refurbishment to the 92 stocks are going to take place, then they'll run even longer and then get replaced in the late 2030s

I can’t wait for these new trains to enter service. It’ll be much better, and the main thing is how hot it gets during the summer in board the older trains! The only thing I don’t like is the doors at the platforms, because we aren’t able to really see the train that well, and it just makes passengers a bit more cramped.

Me from Sydney Australia came into London back in summer 2011 and rode on the Piccadilly line trains. They were not as sweaty and hot but for sure was loud when entering the tunnel to Bounds Green from Arnos Grove. Good times though but I will miss them but will still try to come to London in 2022 once Australia borders open when COVID disappears.

I think it may for a slight increase in capacity - as you probably know, the stretches of these tube lines that pass through central London can get very busy indeed, and putting the seats along the sides allows more people to stand in between them, and therefore increases total capacity (although it may actually decrease the number of seats, I'm not too sure, but the total capacity of the train does go up because there's a lot more space to stand). I agree that the sideways seats are a lot more pleasant for the sections that go over ground (for the underground portions I'm not sure it matters too much). I think the Elizabeth line has a really nice balance of the two types of seating - a trade-off between capacity for the central parts, and nice seating for the outer parts.

Bakerloo will likely get new trains before central that's if either get them at all as only the piccadilly line is confirmed and paid for. TFL has no money and the government would rather play politics rather than properly fund TFL so unless something changes neither will get new trains.

notice how every deep level tube train is shaped exactly the same? when in a tunnel the edges of the carriage is about 20-30cm away from the tunnel wall so there's not much room to change it, this is probably the most space efficient design

At best some or at least one of them can be preserved by preservation societies, but overall these new ones will be good, especially with the air conditioning; that's what I'm looking most forward to.

@@MediaToTheStars That's nothing like the curves on some tube stations, when you have a tight curve you end up with a gap between the train and platform which with doors someone could get trapped in. However all new stations (like on the northern line extension) are being built to allow for PEDs when the trains and signalling allow for it.

Piccadilly are funded by TfL selling the cross rail trains and leasing them back, more expensive in the long term but it gets the 73 stock replaced. No funding yet to replace the 72 or 92 stock.
