The 1992 Stock on the Central Line is being upgraded as part of the Central Line Improvement Project (CLIP) and the first one is now in service, running as a shuttle between Hainault and Woodford.
The complete works include the accessible area, passenger information screens, new audio announcemennts, the refreshed seating with a new moquette pattern, better lighting, better grab poles and CCTV cameras for the first time on the Central Line.

It’s a good thing that the Central Line is receiving a proper upgrade and apart from the terrible new announcements, I’m just glad that these 30 year old trains finally have CCTV and that this consultation will possibly allow the Bakerloo line to receive NTfL before the Central does

Great video, I was wondering why there have been endless minor and severe delays for the last two weeks - due to a shortage of trains. I only found out when I asked a station staff member that this was because lots of trains are being taken out of service to refurbish them. Just a shame this has not been explained to passengers who have no idea why these endless daily delays/problems are happening. If people knew why - they might not be so annoyed - but its still going to mean a sub par service for months!!

Looks better, the Central Line was starting to feel shabby and old compared to the newer stock. That said, the overwhelming worst problem is how hot it gets down there. I still have fond memories of the '62 rolling stock, from my days commuting to school. Have now left London and rarely travel on the underground, what I find jarring is the constant noise of announcements, we survived so well with silence. But having CCTV and visual displays are certainly worthwhile improvements

I used to live on Heathstan Road in East Acton where the trains ran along the back of the gardens (sadly the housing blocks I once knew have since been demolished and rebuilt) I used to sit on the edge of the window in my bedroom and watch the trains go by. I lived on the second floor so had a decent view of the trains... the westbound trains ran on top of an embankment for the best view, the esstbound trains partly hidden as they entered the dip to criss cross under the westbound line heading towards White City. I still remember the sounds of the trains on the track there... Passing wesrbound trains produced a very unusual, non-symmetrical sound along the tracks given the axles would obviously be very symmetrical by design! Biggest memory was seeing the then-new 92 stock trains running with the older 62 stock trains. Very nostalgic but also sad that my favourite tube stock train at the time was being phased out. I would have been about 8 years old at the time they started running the 92s

Good to see this upgrade. I remember the excitement of getting to ride the shiny new 92 stock trains with their original red moquette when they first ran on the Central Line, having ridden the 62 stock trains from when I started at school in 1967. The only negative comment I have about this upgrade is that I really like the announcements being in sync with the displays on the S8 stock trains whereas this appears not to be the case with these, Maybe a software update will fix it!

The PATCO trains between Philadelphia and Camden and wickedly fast acceleration. Thet started service in 1969, and in recent years, got full rebuild by Alstom. Instead of replacing the motors, the motors were just refurbished. For central line, I suspect that the system that manages acceleration would have also changed (and would likely "play" a different sound or none at all.).

@@coxallk32 I honestly do wonder that given the cost of the refurbishment as now hit 500 million pounds, whether it would have made more sense to replace 1/3rd of the trains instead. May be slightly more as the manufacturers made clear the more TFL orders, the lower the cost per train will be. An then use the old trains as spares to keep the rest going. 8:42 The Central Line operates ATO/ATP, which does not require tripcocks, so the trains are not fitted with them when operating in normal service. The Piccadilly line operates tripcock/trainstop signalling. The 1992 Stocks were delivered with tripcocks before ATO/ATP. When they were removed, some were kept around in the event that they needed to be moved along a tripcock line. When the 92s are moved to Acton they are fitted with tripcocks, not removed.

Thanks for another great video. Yes, those handrails above the doors were grey. I don't travel on the Central Line often, but I found that very disconcerting when you want to grab something and it's 'camouflaged' so you can't see it. Improvements are all great, but kinda disappointing that there's no air conditioning. Can't believe we're in 2023 and one of the most unbearably hot lines won't get trains with AC until at least 2040. And yes yes, I know the tunnels also need cooling too, but that could be being worked on during the time these trains are in operation, so might've been a good idea to at least future proof these.

The curved window thing must be a late-80s early-90s design thing - we have exactly those windows on the upper deck of the “Tangara” trains in Sydney Australia. It all looks great, but I really wish they did something about temperature inside , especially during summer months. It’s obviously not a small upgrade, and I’m not sure if it is actually possible to upgrade it, unless you do brand new trains, but the fact that they did those little improvements means that it will be unbearably hot for quite a while, because next stage of development won’t be any time soon

The shapes in the moquette look like visual nods to Underground roundels, and the diamond used on station signs by the Metropolitan Railway (reproduction versions can be seen at Moorgate). But the diamond logo was never used by the Central London Railway; I don't think it ever had a logo as such. So maybe the diamonds in the Central Line moquette are just a coincidence - although I'd say Underground design concepts are too carefully thought out for that.

First of all, it still looks like the same height, and one of the common complaints about old central line trains is that it's too short for a lot of people. Second, apart from priority seating and space for wheelchairs and baby prams (which is great but also a standard?!), the seats look exactly the same except newer fabric. What about aircon or better ventilation? Central line is unimaginably hot and stuffy during summer, causing people to faint and fall ill. What is the point of these new trains if they can't resolve the major issues with the central line? Spending money for nothing. Even if it's not as noisy, it will be noisy when it pulls into the impossible curve that is Bank. The real test of how noisy or squeaky it is would be when these trains get into Bank 😂 all these stations you're riding have a straight track, of course it shouldn't be noisy if it's a new train. Also at 9:37, am I seeing graffiti already on the new carriage doors? Jokes. Finally, voice announcements on a train is a standard. Having a clear display of where the train is going, its final destination, what is the next stop etc - no upgrade on that then? This upgrade is so jokes, and how much is tfl spending on this? 😂😂😂

Replaced the motors, seating, new flooring, remodelling of the layout for accessibility, new dot matrix system that is bespoke for the central line trains only, new wiring, new CCTV, new traction system… in other news TFL has a budget deficit of £740m

Exciting! The train looks great. But, did I see (9:25) someone has already spray painted an interior door? Ugh 😮. Or maybe the doors haven’t been repainted yet?? 🤷🏼‍♂️

The 92’s announcements and motor noise were my favourite and I was really sad to hear that they’re going, but I’m kind of at peace with it as it was needed. Those motors were getting very unreliable and the announcements were sometimes hard to hear in tunnels

I think this is a great idea on TfL's part. There's no need to buy new trains if you can overhaul the ones you already have and genuinely extend their life.

Right to Repair is important. If they were John Deere trains they'd have some strange error code appearing (which simply means you were meant to have replaced them by now).

Overhauling the trains won't fix many of the problems with the Central Line. Track noise in the tunnels is dreadful, and the carriages are not walk through.
@grand.central
@grand.central 4 ай бұрын
@@owensmith7530 The lack of walkthrough carriages I appreciate is a problem, but I don't see how the trains have anything to do with the tunnel noise levels. That has to do with the tracks.

@@grand.central And the horrendous noise is the worst problem with the Central Line, so they should be fixing that not fiddling around the edges with the trains.

I assume the graffiti seen inside the doors was not cleaned off when the train was refurbished, as no chance surely for it to be done on that press trip ? Also a shame the seats have not been increased in height. 1992 stock seats are so low down, I have sometimes had problems standing up from.them.

Was it graffiti or did they have to sand down some of the paint for them to open properly? I can't tell.
